Summary: This study examined the changes in surgical site infection rates before and after the implementation of antibiotic stewardship programs and infection control measures in a Vietnamese tertiary care hospital. The results showed a decrease in surgical site infection rates after the implementation of these programs, although the difference was not statistically significant. Comprehensive infection control education and policies are needed in Vietnamese hospitals to prevent surgical site infections.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the choice of Surgical Antimicrobial Prophylaxis at a tertiary-level care hospital in the United Arab Emirates. The study found that there was overuse of antimicrobials in surgical antibiotic prophylaxis, with ceftriaxone being preferred over cefuroxime in all types of surgeries. No surgical site infections were reported. The study recommends a follow-up comparative study to reduce antimicrobial use without increasing the risk of surgical site infection.

Summary: Pi-PEG is effective in preventing surgical site infection caused by gut-derived pathogens. In a mouse model, it was found that Pi-PEG added to drinking water protected against SSIs through modulation of the gut-wound microbiome.

Summary: Using a combination of four probiotics can reduce the incidence of surgical site infections (SSI) in multiple-trauma (MT) patients. Among the MT patients, orthopedic operations are most susceptible to infection, and the most commonly identified pathogens are Staphylococcus aureus and Acinetobacter baumannii.

Summary: The study found that implementing a care bundle in patients undergoing craniotomy can effectively prevent surgical site infections, especially infections after craniotomy. This comprehensive preventive strategy significantly reduces the incidence of infections and should be considered for implementation in centers with high infection risk.

Summary: The study aimed to establish reliable measurement of surgical site infections (SSIs) after elective colorectal surgery using patient-reported outcome measures. It also implemented an evidence-based care bundle that had demonstrated a reduction in SSI rates in a local hospital. The findings showed that most hospitals successfully reduced their SSI rates, indicating that the care bundle can be replicated in other hospitals.

Summary: The study described the evolution of trends in active SSI surveillance and implementation of prevention measures in a French Teaching Hospital over a 14-year period. The overall SSI rate decreased from 3.0% in 2003 to 1.1% in 2016, with reductions mainly seen in superficial SSIs and high infectious risk procedures. The findings highlighted the benefits of comprehensive hospital SSI surveillance and the importance of collaboration between surgeons and infection control practitioners.

Summary: This study assessed the effect of enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) on wound infection and postoperative complications in liver surgery patients. Published studies on ERAS in liver surgery were collected from electronic databases. The ERAS group had a lower incidence of postoperative wound infection and overall postoperative complication rate, as well as a shorter postoperative hospital stay compared to the control group. ERAS was safe and feasible for liver resection, but further studies are needed to investigate its impact on clinical outcomes.

Summary: Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality, especially in frail patients. This study aimed to determine the incidence of CDI and identify risk factors for mortality and recurrence. The findings showed a significant increase in CDI incidence over the past decade and identified hemodialysis as a significant risk factor for mortality.

Summary: The study investigated the epidemiological characteristics, antimicrobial susceptibility profile, and outcome of patients with complicated intra-abdominal infections (IAIs) at a tertiary hospital in Somalia. It found that the prevalence of IAI in Somalia was 5.3% with a significant number of multidrug-resistant pathogens and a high mortality rate.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the prevalence of COVID-19-associated mucormycosis (CAM) in critically ill COVID-19 patients in a tertiary care hospital in Germany using direct microscopy, fungal culture, and PCR. One Mucorales-PCR positive result was found in bronchoalveolar lavage, while direct microscopy and fungal culture were negative in all cases. The conclusion was that routine screening for CAM in Germany is not necessary.

Summary: SSI post-cesarean section has an incidence of 5.34%, with significant risk factors including chorioamnionitis, PROM, and blood loss of >1000 ml. The management of SSI is mainly medical, but surgical approach may be needed in some cases. The mortality rate due to SSI was 1.33%.

Summary: A pharmacist-led allergy assessment program was associated with decreased use of nonpenicillin alternative antibiotics and high-CDI-risk antibiotics at the hospital level. Individual patients who underwent comprehensive allergy assessment were less likely to receive high-CDI-risk antibiotics at discharge, indicating potential benefits of allergy delabeling. However, reductions in mortality and hospital-acquired CDI risk did not reach statistical significance, suggesting longer-term benefits may require further study.

Summary: Surgical site infections occur in 0.5% to 3% of patients undergoing surgery and are associated with longer hospital stays. Measures such as avoiding razors, maintaining normothermia, using chlorhexidine gluconate plus alcohol-based skin preparation, decolonization with intranasal antistaphylococcal agents, controlling perioperative glucose concentrations, and using negative pressure wound therapy can reduce the rate of surgical site infections.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of a diabetes and kidney disease service on hospitalization, mortality, and clinical outcomes. The results showed that patients who received the intervention had higher hospitalization rates, shorter length of stay, and lower all-cause mortality rates. Additionally, improvements in self-care and glycemic control were observed in the intervention group.

Summary: This study used cancer registry data in Victoria, Australia, to forecast the incidence of prostate cancer in various regions over the next 10 years. The results showed an overall increasing trend in prostate cancer cases, with a more pronounced increase in aggressive cases. These prediction estimates provide valuable insights into the burden of prostate cancer and can support efficient healthcare delivery.

Summary: Benchmarking is widely used in clinical registries to identify underperforming clinicians or health service providers and improve health outcomes. However, suitable methods for benchmarking and outlier detection in clinical registries have not been well established, and current methods are inconsistent. This review aimed to determine the current statistical methods for outlier detection in clinical registry benchmarking. Nineteen studies evaluating various statistical methods in 20 clinical registries were included. The optimal methods for detecting outliers in clinical registry benchmarking remain unclear, and different models may yield different results.
