Summary: Venous leg ulcers have significant impacts on patients, with lengthy treatment and high recurrence rates. This study aimed to explore the lived experiences of patients undergoing management for venous leg ulcers. Through phenomenological interviews, the study identified an essential oscillation between hope and despair, highlighting the challenges patients face and their doubts during ulcer management. The findings emphasize the importance of reliable relationships and competence in reducing patient doubts and improving care and treatment.

Summary: This study aimed to translate, adapt and validate a questionnaire to assess the knowledge of patients with venous leg ulcers about their disease and proper ulcer management. The tool showed good applicability among experts and revealed a low level of patient knowledge. This questionnaire could be used to improve awareness and self-care through education.

Summary: Wound products that support healing of chronic leg ulcers are in great demand, and our case series found that PRP-treated sides of chronic venous leg ulcers tended to heal faster compared to untreated areas, suggesting potential benefits of topical PRP treatment in managing chronic venous leg ulcers.

Summary: Despite major progress, the understanding of VLU pathogenesis and wound healing biology is still limited. The data on topical treatment of venous ulcers are insufficient and weak, with significant methodological flaws. There is a need for updating clinical practice guidelines and further research directions.

Summary: This study examines the association between risky health behaviours and chronic health conditions among individuals aged 50 and above. It finds that the highest prevalence of chronic conditions is in Ghana, while the Russian Federation has the lowest. The oldest-old, tobacco and alcohol consumers, and those living in rural areas are at a higher risk of chronic conditions. On the other hand, females and unemployed individuals have a lower risk.

Summary: This study aimed to explore the mechanisms of low-frequency, low-intensity ultrasound on the healing of chronic wounds in humans. Gene expression analysis showed that ultrasound treatment affected genes related to cell metabolism, proliferation, and immune cell signaling. These findings contribute to the understanding and improvement of ultrasound therapy for chronic wound healing.

Summary: This review aims to identify and discuss the different stages of chronic wound progression, focusing on the changes in the biochemical composition of the wound microenvironment, particularly in venous leg ulcers (VLUs). It provides detailed information about the pathophysiology of venous ulcers and reviews the known changes in the VLU microenvironment as the VLU evolves. Additionally, it discusses simulating conditions for VLU and highlights potentially relevant simulating media to assess the biological safety of medical devices intended to be in contact with these wounds.

Summary: This exploratory study aimed to investigate the association between biomarkers in wound fluid and the healing of split-thickness skin grafts in venous leg ulcers. The study found that the concentration of matrix metalloproteinase-9 in wound fluid was higher in venous leg ulcers showing good healing compared to those with poor healing.

Summary: This systematic review and meta-analysis explored the adjuvant effect of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) in patients with venous leg ulcers undergoing surgeries and nonsurgeries. The results showed that HBOT combined with surgeries led to faster ulcer healing, lower pain scores, and smaller ulcer area. HBOT combined with nonsurgeries was associated with improved ulcer pain but had no significant effect on ulcer area improvement. Further studies are needed to investigate the effect of HBOT in nonsurgical treatments.

Summary: This scoping review examined the level of health literacy in patients with venous leg ulcers and its impact on self-management behaviors and healing outcomes. The findings suggest that health literacy is generally suboptimal in this population, and health literacy interventions have limited effects on improving venous leg ulcer specific outcomes.

Summary: Chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) is a common disease that affects the lower limb venous systems. Balneotherapy, a form of water-based physiotherapy, may be a cost-effective treatment option for CVI. This review assessed the effectiveness and safety of balneotherapy for people with CVI, and found that it moderately improves disease severity and slightly improves pain and skin pigmentation changes, with uncertain effects on health-related quality of life and other symptoms.

Summary: This study investigated factors associated with the development of first occurrence of venous leg ulcerations and identified risk factors such as male gender, older age, history of nonvenous leg ulceration, anticoagulant use, and preexisting venous insufficiency. Protective factors included venous surgery, compression stockings, prescribed statin medications, and pain medications. The findings support a paradigm shift towards prevention of venous leg ulceration.

Summary: This study found that parent-child meetings provided parents with enjoyable experiences and social-emotional support. Parents reported an increase in parenting knowledge, skills, and practices regarding healthy behaviors of their children through these meetings. The positive attitude of experts, practical information, and interactive workshops were valued by parents in promoting healthy behaviors for their children.
