In this study, the effects of the wound-covering materials, Acticoat((R)) and Cutinova Hydro((R)), on wound healing have been studied in rabbit models with open and tissue-lost wounds with full-thickness flank excisions. Rabbits were used as subjects with three groups of four rabbits each, and trial periods of 7, 14 and 21{\uns}days. Four circular wounds, of 1.5 cm diameter were made two on the right (one of them control) and two on the left (one of them control) of the dorsal sides of the abdomen. Acticoat((R)) and Cutinova Hydro((R)) were applied on the wounds with suture for a period of 21 days and one each placed on the right and left sides as control with gauze. Biopsy specimens were taken from the animals at the end of the research period to check the length of the epithelium, epithelial thickness, size of wounds, wound granulation tissue formation and histopathological evaluation for clarity. The Acticoat((R)) group showed better healing and scar formation compared to the Cutinova Hydro((R)) group by macroscopic examination. Epithelial wound length and clarity in terms of statistical difference occurred on day 21 (P <0.05); while the length of the wound epithelium decreased patency, epithelial thickness on days similar to 7, 14 and 21, showed no statistical differences (P >0.05). As a result, the Acticoat((R)) wound dressing was determined as a more reliable for the early wound healing. This study has shown the short-term clinical benefits of hydroactive, polyurethane dressings in the management of acute wounds. However, longer periods of wound healing procedure should be planned for reliable and safe results of wound dressing. It has also been concluded that microbiological analyses should be included for more robust and reliable comparisons.

Evaluation of Boron's Adjuvant Activity in Inactive Bacterin Vaccines Using the Mice Model

Zafer Sayin, Ali Uslu, Osman Erganis, Abdullah Basoglu, Ozgur Ozdemir, Asli Sakmanoglu, Uckun Sait Ucan, Zeki Aras

Summary: Vaccination is the most effective way to prevent infectious diseases, and adjuvants are necessary to enhance the immune response. This study revealed the potential adjuvant effect of boric acid in vaccines, showing reduced inflammatory reactions and increased antibody levels. Further target animal studies are needed to confirm these findings.

Summary: The aim of this study was to determine hypoxic brain damage in calves with perinatal asphyxia using brain-specific damage biomarkers. The results showed that asphyxia and hypoxemia caused hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy in perinatal calves, and UCHL1 and S100B concentrations were found to be useful markers for the determination of hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy in calves with perinatal asphyxia. Neurological status scores and some blood gas parameters were helpful in mortality prediction.

The effect of etanercept and anakinra on experimental type 2 diabetes pathology in rats

Ozgur Ozdemir, Mehmet Burak Ates, Gokhan Akcakavak

Summary: In this study, the effects of single or combined use of IL-1 and TNF-a antagonists anakinra and etanercept on streptozotocin-induced type 2 diabetes in rats were evaluated. The treatments showed significant improvements in pathological changes related to diabetes in internal organs, with etanercept being more effective on pancreatic lesion scores and anakinra being more effective on testicular changes. There were no toxic-pathological effects observed, indicating the potential of these antagonists in treating type 2 diabetes.

Summary: Encephalitic listeriosis is a significant problem in ruminants, and this study compared the presence of Listeria monocytogenes using immunohistochemistry and Real-Time PCR. The results showed that sheep and goats had more severe staining for L. monocytogenesis antigen in immunohistochemistry, and microabscesses were more severe in these animals as well. Additionally, some patients with Coenurus cerebralis cysts tested positive for Listeria in immunohistochemistry.

The Usability of Cytological and Immunocytological Methods for Rapid Diagnosis of Encephalitic Listeriosis in Ruminants

Ozgur Ozdemir, Mustafa Ortatatli, Funda Terzi, Fatih Hatipoglu, Mustafa Kemal Ciftci, Mehmet Burak Ates

Summary: The study showed that cytological examination of the pons and medulla oblongata can provide a rapid pre-diagnosis of listeriosis based on the presence of intense neutrophils. Immunocytochemical staining of cytological preparations showed a 92.3% accuracy in diagnosing listeriosis. There was a strong positive correlation among cytology, ICC, histopathology, and IHC methods in diagnosing encephalitic listeriosis.
