MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are a class of recently identified noncoding RNAs that regulate gene expression at posttranscriptional level. Due to the large number of genes regulated by miRNAs, miRNAs play important roles in many cellular processes. Emerging evidence indicates that miRNAs are dysregulated in pituitary adenomas, a class of intracranial neoplasms which account for 10-15% of diagnosed brain tumors. Deregulated miRNAs and their targets contribute to pituitary adenomas progression and are associated with cell cycle control, apoptosis, invasion, and pharmacological treatment of pituitary adenomas. To provide an overview of miRNAs dysregulation and functions of these miRNAs in pituitary adenoma progression, we summarize the deregulated miRNAs and their targets to shed more light on their potential as therapeutic targets and novel biomarkers.

PddCas: A Polydisperse Droplet Digital CRISPR/Cas-Based Assay for the Rapid and Ultrasensitive Amplification-Free Detection of Viral DNA/RNA

Yingying Xue, Xinyi Luo, Wenfei Xu, Ke Wang, Mengqi Wu, Lei Chen, Gewei Yang, Kun Ma, Ming Yao, Qinghe Zhou, Qingshan Lv, Xuhui Li, Jianhua Zhou, Jiasi Wang

Summary: In this study, a polydisperse droplet digital CRISPR-Cas-based assay (PddCas) was developed for rapid and ultrasensitive detection of viral DNA/RNA. The method demonstrated high sensitivity, with a limit of detection of 100 aM for target DNA and 10 aM for target RNA. It also showed 100% sensitivity and specificity in detecting SARS-CoV-2 and HPV 18 in clinical samples.

Summary: Cervical cancer is a common tumor in women, and early diagnosis is crucial. However, there is a lack of specific biomarkers and efficient methods. In this study, methylated SEPT9 (mSEPT9) was identified as a specific biomarker, and a novel method called MeCRISPR was developed for rapid and ultrasensitive detection of mSEPT9. The results showed high sensitivity and specificity in detecting mSEPT9 in clinical cervical cancer patients. This method has the potential for cancer screening in low-resource settings.

Application of Euglena gracilis-Derived Peptides as a Cosmetic Ingredient to Prevent Allergic Skin Inflammation

Xuhui Li, Chunxin Xia, Danni Kong, Ming Xu, Jin Zhu, Congfen He, Bingliang Wang, Junxiang Li

Summary: This study evaluated the therapeutic effects of Euglena gracilis-derived peptides on allergic inflammation and verified their efficacy through simulated experiments and clinical trials. The results showed that Euglena gracilis-derived peptides have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities, and can repair inflammation-induced damages. Therefore, Euglena gracilis-derived peptides can be considered as a novel cosmetic ingredient for preventing allergic responses.
