Plaque Characteristics in Culprit Lesions and Inflammatory Status in Diabetic Acute Coronary Syndrome Patients

OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to assess the plaque characteristics in culprit lesions in diabetic patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS). BACKGROUND Data of the relationship between diabetes mellitus and plaque characteristics in patients with ACS are lacking. METHODS We performed grayscale intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) analysis in 422 ACS patients and virtual histology (VH)-IVUS in 310 ACS patients. By subgroup analysis, 112 patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) with plaque ruptures also were evaluated. RESULTS In the diabetic subgroup, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) was significantly increased (p = 0.008), multivessel disease was more common (65% vs. 29%, p < 0.001), and plaque burden was greater (79.7 +/- 9.8 mm(2) vs. 74.2 +/- 8.9 mm(2), p < 0.001). In the subgroup analysis of 112 AMI patients with plaque ruptures, the presence of multiple plaque ruptures (60% vs. 29%, p < 0.001) and thrombus (72% vs. 52%, p = 0.032) were more common in diabetic group. Diabetes mellitus was the independent predictor of hs-CRP elevation (odds ratio [OR]: 3.030, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.204 to 7.623, p = 0.019), and multiple plaque ruptures (OR: 2.984, 95% CI: 1.311 to 6.792, p = 0.009) by multivariable analysis. In 310 VH-IVUS subsets, the absolute and percent necrotic core volumes were significantly greater (16.9 +/- 15.1 mm(3) vs. 11.5 +/- 11.4 mm(3), p < 0.001, and 17.3 +/- 9.4% vs. 13.7 +/- 7.5%, p < 0.001, respectively), and the presence of at least one thin-cap fibroatheroma (TCFA) (60% vs. 42%, p = 0.003) and multiple TCFAs (28% vs. 11%, p < 0.001) were more common in the diabetic group. Diabetes mellitus was the only independent predictor of TCFA by multivariable analysis (OR: 2.139, 95% CI: 1.266 to 3.613, p = 0.004). CONCLUSIONS Diabetic patients with ACS have more plaques with characteristics of plaque vulnerability, different composition of plaques, and have increased inflammatory status compared with nondiabetic patients with ACS. Summary: Indeterminate diastolic function is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular death or admission for heart failure, and is related to coronary microvascular dysfunction. Presence of coronary microvascular dysfunction and elevated left ventricular filling pressure are independent predictors of cardiovascular death or admission for heart failure among patients with indeterminate diastolic function.

Summary: Researchers have developed a full-color, vertically stacked micro-LED (mu LED) with the highest array density and smallest size reported so far. This was achieved using a two-dimensional materials-based layer transfer technique, enabling the growth of RGB LEDs with submicron thickness on two-dimensional material-coated substrates, followed by stacking and top-down fabrication. This technology not only opens up new possibilities for full-color mu LED displays in augmented and virtual reality applications, but also provides a generalizable platform for other three-dimensional integrated devices.

Prognostic Impact of Cardiac Diastolic Function and Coronary Microvascular Function on Cardiovascular Death

Summary: This study evaluated the association between cardiac diastolic dysfunction and coronary microvascular dysfunction (CMD) in patients without significant left ventricular systolic dysfunction and epicardial coronary stenosis. The study found that CMD was independently associated with cardiac diastolic dysfunction and both were associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular death or admission for heart failure.

The BVS showed better mechanical properties and lower restenosis rate than the MBS. Thinner and completely absorbed BVSs should be developed and evaluated for long-term safety and efficacy.

Remnant cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and incident cardiovascular disease among Koreans: a national population-based study

Summary: This study investigated the synergistic association between low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and remnant cholesterol (remnant-C) levels with incident cardiovascular disease (CVD) in a large Korean population. The results showed that individuals with high levels of both LDL-C and remnant-C had a higher risk of CVD compared to those with normal levels. Additionally, elevated remnant-C levels, independent of LDL-C levels, were associated with an increased risk of CVD.

Data-Efficient Deep Generative Model with Discrete Latent Representation for High- Materials

Summary: The rapid advancement of additive manufacturing technologies allows for the creation of pixelated or voxelated structures known as digital materials in 2D or 3D, respectively. These digital materials offer maximum design flexibility without constraints on geometry and material, resulting in unique physical properties and functionalities that cannot be achieved through conventional manufacturing processes. However, the vast design space of digital materials presents a significant challenge in maximizing their availability. In this study, a novel deep generative model with discrete representations of the latent space was developed for designing digital materials. The proposed model, inspired by the discrete nature of digital materials, achieves comparable reconstruction and prediction accuracies with only one-third of the data usage compared to conventional generative models. The physical insights provided by the discrete representations of the latent space demonstrate a strong correlation between certain discrete representations and the mechanical behavior of digital materials, such as auxeticity. Furthermore, the proposed model is proven to be an excellent tool for generating functionally graded structures and previously unseen auxetic structures.
