Plasmodium parasites were sought in 30 skylarks (Alauda arvensis) captured in the Departement des Landes (France) during the post-mating migration. Parasite prevalence was low (6130) while intra-specific diversity was high (14 species). Five species were morphologically indistinguishable from those found in the magpie (Pica pica) from the Paris region: Plasmodium dorsti, P. bioccai, P. ghadiriani, P. dherteae, and P. relictum quentini n. subsp. Two species had been described in other birds: P. rouxi and P. hexamerium. The species Plasmodium alaudae (Celli & Sanfelice, 189 1) is redefined in this article. Finally, five new species are described and named: P. reniai n. sp., P. coluzzii n. sp., P. caloti n. sp., P. ginsburgi n. sp. and P. jeanriouxi n. sp., and one, Plasmodium sp. is described but not named. The pattern of infection in the skylark, a migratory gregarious bird, is compared to that of the magpie, a solitary sedentary bird.

Summary: This study found that chloroquine can potentiate the activity of 8-aminoquinoline compound primaquine against several malarial parasites in normal primary hepatocytes, but not in a hepatocarcinoma cell line.

Emergence of the zoonotic tick Dermacentor (Indocentor) auratus Supino, 1897 (Acari: Ixodidae) in Singapore

Summary: Despite the significant public health risk posed by ticks, research on the diversity of ticks and tick-borne diseases in Singapore has been limited until recently. Only fourteen tick species in five genera have been recorded in Singapore so far. Dermacentor auratus, found in Singapore for the first time, has been identified on a range of hosts, including humans, with DNA sequences at 2 loci provided for further analysis and discussion on the health risk it poses in Singapore.

Summary: This study identified CD98 heavy chain as a receptor for the PvRBP2a parasite ligand, further demonstrating its role in P. vivax reticulocyte invasion. The interaction between CD98 and PvRBP2a suggests its potential as a vaccine target against P. vivax malaria.

Summary: This study found that mRNA vaccines are highly effective at preventing symptomatic and severe COVID-19 associated with B.1.617.2 infection. Vaccination is associated with a faster decline in viral RNA load and a robust serological response.

Lye, Laurent Renia, Lisa F. P. Ng

Summary: The study found that the Delta variant of the SARS-CoV-2 virus can infect vaccinated individuals. Vaccine breakthrough cases showed lower memory B cell frequencies against the SARS-CoV-2 receptor-binding domain, but antibodies secreted by memory B cells retained neutralizing properties against the Delta variant. Inflammatory cytokines were lower in vaccine breakthrough infections compared to primary infections, highlighting the importance of vaccination in preventing inflammation.

Plasmodium malariae: the persisting mysteries of a persistent parasite

Richard Culleton, Arnab Pain, Georges Snounou

Summary: Plasmodium malariae is a neglected malaria parasite, with less research conducted compared to its more notorious cousins, P. falciparum and P. vivax. However, there has been increasing interest in this parasite due to improved detection techniques revealing a wider prevalence and high numbers of chronic, asymptomatic infections, particularly in Africa.

Summary: Early detection of infection is crucial in limiting the spread of COVID-19, and a flow cytometry-based assay has been developed to detect SARS-CoV-2 spike protein antibodies in COVID-19 patients. The antibody response is significantly higher in later stages of infection, and the assay can also detect antibodies in asymptomatic individuals with high sensitivity, demonstrating its potential for serological analysis of both symptomatic and asymptomatic infections.
