Summary: In this study, deformation twinning in single-crystal Mg under different tension directions and high strain rates was investigated using in situ, time-resolved synchrotron X-ray diffraction. The findings reveal the mechanism and deformation anisotropy of extension twinning in Mg, which is important for understanding the deformation behavior of Mg.

Summary: The growth of high-quality protein crystals is essential for protein structure analysis. Twisting is identified as one of the main residual defects in high-quality crystals, determining their perfection. The handedness of twisting may be attributed to the interaction of chiral protein molecules with asymmetric units in crystal forms. This study provides insights into the growth mechanism and control of high-quality crystals.

Summary: In this study, a simple strategy was demonstrated for constructing low-tortuosity through-pores in both vertical and planar directions of electrodes by casting large particles into single-particle-layer electrodes. Through multi-scale characterizations and simulations, correlations between material/electrode structures, electrolyte permeability, polysulfide migration, and sulfur reactions were elucidated. The high-loading and dense sulfur cathode fabricated by this method delivers a high specific capacity at a very low electrolyte/sulfur ratio.

Summary: This paper reports the crystallization of single α-TiP crystals through prolonged hydrothermal treatment of a metallic titanium alloy in a highly concentrated phosphoric acid solution. The crystalline structure of the obtained crystals was analyzed and their properties were investigated. The results showed that the α-TiP crystals have a monoclinic structure and exhibit higher thermal stability.

Summary: This study aims to understand the physics of the recrystallization process of CIS-damaged LNO crystal upon thermal annealing. The recovery of the crystallinity from the CIS-induced lattice strain and stress, as well as the progressive reduction of the defects clusters dimension, were studied using high-resolution X-ray diffraction, micro-Raman backscattering spectroscopy, and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM).

Summary: This study investigates the onset of detwinning in magnesium alloy Mg-3Al-1Zn under continuous loading using real-time in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction. The results reveal that detwinning of the {10 (1) over bar2} extension twins occurs immediately upon unloading, regardless of whether the twins are activated by tension parallel to or compression perpendicular to the c-axis fibers.

Summary: In-house X-ray powder diffraction was used to study the room-temperature structural evolution of orthochromate RECrO3 (RE = Y, Eu-Lu) single crystals grown by the floating-zone method with a laser-diode furnace. An anomaly in the evolution of lattice parameters was found in the LuCrO3 single crystal, possibly due to the loss of both spin and orbital angular moments of Lu3+ ions leading to the disappearance of magnetostriction effect. The evolution of Bragg (0 2 0), (1 1 2), (2 0 0), and (0 2 1) peaks was monitored, showing regular variations with rare-earth ionic radius indicating changes in lattice constants.

Summary: High energy X-ray synchrotron diffraction was used to investigate the elastic anisotropy of the nickel-based superalloy IN718 produced by laser powder bed fusion (PBF-LB). Different micromechanical models were used to refine the single-crystal elastic constants (SCEC) from these experiments. The results show that each model accurately describes the elastic anisotropy of the material.

Summary: Slip and extension twinning are the dominant deformation mechanisms in Magnesium (Mg) and its alloys, and crystal plasticity is a powerful tool to study these mechanisms. Different models have been incorporated to capture various properties, including detwinning, along with the advancement of experimental frameworks to investigate the properties of Mg and its alloys. Future research directions aim to enhance the deformation response of Mg and its alloys, leading to increased deployment of this lightweight structural metal in engineering applications.

Summary: This report investigates the reversible twinning in B19 ' martensite in a Nb-nanowire/NiTiFe-matrix alloy. The study achieves a twinning strain of up to 5.1% by pre-deforming the alloy. In situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction results reveal the generation of reversible twins, and the measured twinning strain clarifies the contribution of reversible twinning to twinning induced elasticity (TIE).

Summary: By investigating the deviation angles of Ni-based single crystal superalloys using both RO-XRD and BRL-XRD techniques, it was found that the cutting direction significantly affects the deviation angle. The primary orientation angle is used to characterize inherent orientation changes and eliminate the effects of cutting direction in Ni-based single crystal superalloys. Additionally, two pairs of diffraction peaks can be observed in the RO-XRD pattern of Ni-based single crystal superalloys.

Summary: This study explores the formation process of solid Xe nanoparticles in an expanding supercooled Xe jet under vacuum conditions using X-ray diffraction experiments. It is found that the structure of Xe nanoparticles is a mixture of face-centered cubic and randomly stacked hexagonal close-packed structures, rather than pure face-centered cubic. Instantaneous coexistence of comparably sized face-centered cubic and hexagonal close-packed domains in single Xe nanoparticles is observed.
