'Function First': how to promote physical activity and physical function in people with long-term conditions managed in primary care? A study combining realist and co-design methods

Summary: This study developed a taxonomy of interventions and a programme theory to explain how interventions improve physical activity and function in people with long-term conditions managed in primary care. The results show that adapting physical activity promotion to individual needs and preferences, along with reinforcing practice culture and providing targeted resources, can increase opportunities for addressing low physical activity. The study also highlighted the importance of training to enhance practice staff's knowledge and capability in promoting physical activity, and emphasized the significance of making physical activity promotion programmes meaningful and trustworthy to both patients and professionals.
