Evaluation of penile curvature in patients with hypospadias; gaps in the current practice and future perspectives

Tariq O. Abbas

Summary: This article reviews the current tools used for assessing the degree of penile curvature (PC) in children and highlights the strengths and limitations of each method. Various approaches are currently being explored, with potential to overcome the difficulties encountered in clinical practice and research studies when measuring PC.

An objective hypospadias classification system

Tariq O. Abbas

Summary: Current approaches to classifying hypospadias severity lack precision in reflecting the degree of urethral hypoplasia and extent of underdevelopment. This study introduces an alternative classification system that objectively reflects the developmental pathology underlying this condition.

QUCoughScope: An Intelligent Application to Detect COVID-19 Patients Using Cough and Breath Sounds

Tawsifur Rahman, Nabil Ibtehaz, Amith Khandakar, Md Sakib Abrar Hossain, Yosra Magdi Salih Mekki, Maymouna Ezeddin, Enamul Haque Bhuiyan, Mohamed Arselene Ayari, Anas Tahir, Yazan Qiblawey, Sakib Mahmud, Susu M. Zughaier, Tariq Abbas, Somaya Al-Maadeed, Muhammad E. H. Chowdhury

Summary: Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, mass testing has become essential to reduce the spread of the virus. This paper introduces a novel machine learning approach that allows for the detection of COVID-19 patients (both symptomatic and asymptomatic) from the convenience of their homes, aiming to relieve the burden on healthcare systems and prevent unintentional virus transmission. By collecting cough and breath sound samples and applying a deep learning-based model, the system can accurately classify COVID-19 patients and healthy individuals, providing a pre-screening method to prioritize patients for further testing.

Orchio-Septopexy: A new technique to cover and fix detorsed testis undergoing fasciotomy of tunica albuginea

Mohammed Elifranji, Tariq Abbas, Bruno Leslie, Santiago Vallasciani, Abderrahman El Kadhi, Joao Luiz Pippi-Salle

Summary: This study presents a technique that facilitates and expedites the procedure after testicular detorsion, maintaining the fasciotomy area decompressed. In 11 cases, 54% of the patients were salvaged with good vascularity and maintained testicular volume.

Functional recoverability post-pyeloplasty in children with ureteropelvic junction obstruction and poorly functioning kidneys: Systematic review

Tariq Abbas, Mohammed Elifranji, Muthana Al-Salihi, Jamil Ahmad, Santiago Vallasciani, Abderrahman Elkadhi, Cihat Ozcan, Berk Burgu, Aykut Akinci, Abdulla Alnaimi, J. L. Pippi Salle

Summary: The management of poorly functioning kidneys associated with ureteropelvic junction obstruction is controversial. This study systematically summarizes the evidence on the effects of pyeloplasty on the renal function of children with unilateral UPJO and identifies potential predictors of renal functional recoverability. The results suggest that the preoperative renal function is a significant predictive factor for postoperative functional recoverability.

Ultrasonographic Evaluation of the Hypospadiac Penis in Children

Tariq O. Abbas

Summary: Penile ultrasonography (PUG) is a feasible and accurate approach to evaluating penile configuration in children with hypospadias. It accurately determines the distal extent of the spongiosal component of the urethral plate, which can potentially improve surgical planning and assessment of repair procedures.

Management of neuropathic bladder secondary to spina bifida: Twenty years' experience with a conservative approach

Hesham Elagami, Tariq O. O. Abbas, Kathryn Evans, Feilim Murphy

Summary: The management of neuropathic bladder secondary to spina bifida is still controversial. The bladder and renal functional outcomes can be improved with close monitoring and less invasive management.

Prognostic Model of ICU Admission Risk in Patients with COVID-19 Infection Using Machine Learning

Khandaker Reajul Islam, Jaya Kumar, Toh Leong Tan, Mamun Bin Ibne Reaz, Tawsifur Rahman, Amith Khandakar, Tariq Abbas, Md Sakib Abrar Hossain, Susu M. Zughaier, Muhammad E. H. Chowdhury

Summary: This study aims to develop a generalized and reliable prognostic model for ICU admission for both COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 patients. By analyzing the features of patients at admission, important variables were identified to improve the accuracy of predicting ICU requirement risk. The stacking machine learning model demonstrated the best performance, providing effective prediction of ICU requirement risk for patients.

Deep learning based automated quantification of urethral plate characteristics using the plate objective scoring tool (POST)

Tariq O. Abbas, Mohamed AbdelMoniem, Ibrahim A. Khalil, Md Sakib Abrar Hossain, Muhammad E. H. Chowdhury

Summary: This study explores the use of deep learning algorithm to assess urethral plate characteristics in 2D images, aiming to increase the objectivity and reproducibility of hypospadias repair. A deep learning-based landmark detection model was developed and validated using a dataset of prepubertal boys. The model accurately localized the glans area and predicted the coordinates of the landmarks, leading to an accurate appraisal of UP characteristics in distal hypospadias.
