Summary: The study evaluated the impact of pelvic dimensions on the risk of anastomotic leak in rectal cancer patients. The results showed that pelvic inlet and intertuberous distance were independent predictors for postoperative anastomotic leak. The incorporation of pelvic dimensions with other factors in the nomogram may provide a clinical tool for predicting anastomotic leak.

Summary: This study retrospectively analyzed data from 556 patients with rectal cancer and found that the placement of a transanal drainage tube (TDT) can reduce the occurrence of anastomotic leakage (AL) following low anterior resection (LAR). Logistic analysis identified the non-use of a TDT as a risk factor for AL.

Summary: Benign anastomotic strictures following colorectal surgical resection are a common but under-reported complication, affecting up to 30% of patients and significantly impacting their quality of life. Endoscopic techniques, such as balloon dilatation and stenting, show varying success rates in avoiding the need for surgical reintervention, with challenges including the need for repeated treatments and stent migration. Further research is needed to explore novel therapies for improving quality of life in these patients.

Summary: This study retrospectively analyzed the charts of patients who had colorectal anastomotic leakage after laparoscopic low anterior resection. The findings suggested that combined laparoscopic lavage/drainage and transanal endoluminal repair were effective in the management of anastomotic leakage and were associated with a lower morbidity rate, especially in reducing intraabdominal infections.

Summary: This study retrospectively analyzed data of rectal cancer patients undergoing anterior resection and found that being male and having T3-T4 stage were independent risk factors for anastomotic leakage (AL). Additionally, defunctioning stoma (DS) was found to reduce the occurrence of symptomatic AL.

Summary: Male sex, incomplete intestinal obstruction, and using a 32-mm circular stapler during surgery were identified as independent risk factors for anastomotic leakage after laparoscopic low anterior resection for rectal cancer. Choosing a smaller-diameter circular stapler may reduce the occurrence of anastomotic leakage without increasing the incidence of stenosis in this patient population.

Summary: This study evaluated the inter-observer variation among surgeons in the interpretation of bowel blood perfusion assessed visually by ICG-FI, and compared the results between patients with and without AL using visual assessment and quantitative pixel analysis. The results showed wide inter-observer variation in the surgeon's visual assessment of ICG-FI, with no differences between patients with and without AL. However, quantitative pixel analysis showed a significant difference between groups.

Summary: This study compared the oncologic outcomes of laparoscopic vs open surgery after successful colonic stent deployment in patients with obstructive left-sided colorectal cancer. The two groups had similar patient and tumor characteristics, with the laparoscopic group showing longer operation times but lower blood loss compared to the open surgery group. The 5-year disease-free survival and overall survival estimates did not significantly differ between the two groups over a median follow-up duration of 50.5 months.

Summary: The interval between neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (nCRT) and surgery has been debated for its impact on oncological outcomes and postoperative complications. This study found that performing surgery >8 weeks after nCRT can increase tumor regression, but it does not significantly affect oncological outcomes and postoperative complications compared to surgery conducted at 6-8 weeks after nCRT.

Summary: Right-sided colonic diverticulitis (RCD) and left-sided colonic diverticulitis (LCD) have distinct clinical characteristics and recurrence patterns. RCD is less severe and has a lower recurrence rate than LCD, suggesting conservative treatment is sufficient. Complicated diverticulitis and percutaneous drainage are predictors for RCD recurrence.

Summary: The study demonstrates a close association between gut microbiota composition and clinical outcomes in CRC patients. High abundance of Prevotella genus is correlated with lower risks of CRC progression and decease, while other bacteria may indicate a high risk of progression. The microbiota-derived hazard score incorporating both beneficial and pathogenic bacteria provides a valuable asset in predicting medical outcomes for CRC patients.

Summary: This retrospective study evaluated the clinical outcomes of laparoscopic and open lateral pelvic lymph node dissection (LPLND) surgeries for rectal cancer. The results showed that laparoscopic LPLND had less blood loss, lower transfusion rate, fewer wound infections, and decreased neuropathy compared to open LPLND. Although operating times were longer, there was no significant difference in lateral pelvic recurrence rate and survival rate between the two groups.
