Summary: This study assessed the usefulness of plasma C-reactive protein (CRP) and calprotectin (CLP) as early predictors of colorectal anastomotic leakage (CAL). By measuring and analyzing biomarkers and clinical criteria, it was found that CRP and CLP can moderately predict CAL, and their combination showed increased diagnostic accuracy.

Summary: This study investigated the predictive value of C-reactive protein (CRP) in postoperative complications after cytoreduction surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC). The findings demonstrated that monitoring CRP levels can be useful in predicting the occurrence of infectious and non-infectious complications after surgery, which has clinical significance.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the predictive value of C-reactive protein (CRP) in robotic esophagectomy (RAMIE) for postoperative infectious complications (PIC). The results showed that postoperative CRP is a good negative predictor for PIC, especially after both RAMIE and open esophagectomy (OE). After RAMIE, CRP peaks later with a lower cut-off value.

Summary: The study clarified the relationship between obesity and postoperative C-reactive protein levels and evaluated the effectiveness of adjusting CRP levels for predicting early complications following laparoscopic gastrectomy for gastric cancer. The findings demonstrated that adjusting CRP cutoff values for BMI was useful in predicting severe complications following gastrectomy.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the management and outcomes of patients with postoperative pancreatic fistula after distal pancreatectomy. The results showed that patients with grade B postoperative pancreatic fistulas who received therapeutic antibiotics only had better outcomes. Computed tomography values may be useful in predicting peripancreatic fluid collection infection.

Summary: This study aimed to identify rapid and accurate early diagnostic indicators for intra-abdominal infection after general surgery. The combination of CRP, PCT, TNF alpha, and IL6 showed higher predictive efficiency for complicated IAIs among surgical patients compared to individual indicators on postoperative days 1 and 3. These composite indicators can serve as predictors with high sensitivity and specificity for postoperative abdominal infectious complications.

Summary: The study found that CRP-trajectory measurements, including changes in CRP levels postoperatively, are not accurate predictors of anastomotic leakage in patients undergoing rectal cancer surgery. High negative predictive values of CRP changes are mainly due to the relatively low prevalence of anastomotic leakage in the patient population.

Summary: The study included 2501 cases, with CRP being the most reliable marker for excluding anastomotic leakage. Especially after laparoscopic resection, its high negative predictive value allows for safe hospital discharge on the fourth postoperative day. However, routine use of procalcitonin or neutrophil counts does not seem to increase diagnostic accuracy.

Summary: This study demonstrated that postoperative C-reactive protein (CRP) level is associated with postoperative complications in children with hypospadias, serving as a reliable marker for predicting patient prognosis. Attention should be paid to the length of urethral defect and CRP level as independent risk factors for hypospadias prognosis.

Summary: LPCAT3, a major lysophosphatidylcholine acyltransferase isoform, has been studied extensively in the context of cardiometabolism. Recent investigations have expanded the understanding of LPCAT3's role in other tissues such as skeletal muscle and in unexpected biological processes such as cell death and oncogenesis. The elucidation of LPCAT3's three-dimensional structure has provided further insight into the enzyme's mechanism and substrate specificity. LPCAT3 plays a critical role in skeletal muscle membrane remodeling, insulin signaling, and the process of ferroptosis. Additionally, LPCAT3 may modulate ER stress and antitumor immunity in tumor-associated macrophages. However, caution is needed in targeting LPCAT3 due to the potential deleterious effects on cell death and oncogenesis.

Summary: This study aimed to describe the frequency and outcomes of surgical resection in a well-defined population with non-metastatic digestive cancer, according to age, sex, comorbidities, and obesity. The results showed a decrease in access to surgery with increasing age, but the expected benefits of surgery remained significant. Age itself should not be the sole criterion in medical decision-making.

Summary: HIF-1α plays a dual role in atherosclerosis, with both detrimental and beneficial effects. Its impact depends on the cell type expressing HIF-1α, and it can be stabilized by oxLDLs and oxysterols, leading to various responses including inflammation, angiogenesis, and metabolic reprogramming. Additionally, HIF-1α promotes the accumulation of cholesterol and triglycerides in macrophages.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the increase of 2-AA-LPC in carotid plaques from T2DM and control patients and explore its association with plaque vulnerability and biomarkers altered during diabetes. The results showed that 2-AA-LPC was significantly enriched in plaques from diabetic patients and correlated with inflammatory markers within the plaques. This highlights the involvement of local inflammation, arachidonic acid metabolism, and diabetes in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis.

Summary: This nationwide retrospective study investigated the impact of hospital volume and liver transplantation activity on postoperative mortality and failure to rescue after liver surgery. The study found that high-volume centers, defined as performing more than 25 liver resections per year, had lower rates of in-hospital mortality and failure to rescue, particularly related to specific complications. Liver transplantation activity did not influence these outcomes.
