Summary: The study demonstrated that laparoscopic complete mesocolic excision (CME) for right-sided colon cancer (RCC) is technically feasible and safe, with similar postoperative complication rates as laparoscopic non-complete mesocolic excision (NCME). Additionally, CME resulted in a higher number of harvested lymph nodes compared to NCME.

Summary: This study compared the outcomes of right-sided colon cancer (RCC) and left-sided colon cancer (LCC). The results showed no significant difference in overall survival or time to recurrence between patients with RCC and LCC. However, in stage II colon cancer patients, RCC was associated with shorter time to recurrence.

Summary: Current evidence on robotic right colectomy with CME is limited, but existing studies suggest good early clinical results and potential improvement in oncologic outcomes. Further large studies are needed to define the long-term oncologic results of robotic right colectomy with CME and its benefits compared to laparoscopy.

Summary: This study compared the advantages and disadvantages of ileocolic anastomosis and extracorporeal ileocolic anastomosis in laparoscopic right colectomy. The results showed that ileocolic anastomosis can accelerate gastrointestinal function recovery, reduce postoperative pain, and is more suitable for obese patients.

Summary: Patients with locally advanced colon cancer who undergo laparoscopic colectomy experience better overall outcomes, shorter lengths of stay, and reduced postoperative ileus compared to those undergoing open colectomy. Laparoscopic colectomy is equally effective in obese/non-obese patients, T4a/T4b patients, and regardless of the location of the tumor.

Summary: This study examined national trends in the use of colonic stenting as a bridge to resection for malignant large bowel obstruction and evaluated outcomes relative to immediate colectomy. The findings suggest that colonic stenting is associated with lower ostomy rates but comparable clinical outcomes.

Summary: This study compared the outcomes of extended right, left, and segmental left colectomy for splenic flexure carcinoma patients in a multicenter European sample. While extended right colectomy was associated with increased risk of postoperative complications, there were no significant differences in overall survival or disease-free survival between the three procedures. The study supports the use of colon-sparing surgical techniques such as segmental left colectomy for the resection of splenic flexure carcinomas.

Summary: This study compared the short-term outcomes of RCME and RRC for right-sided colon cancer, finding no significant differences in operative time, complications, reoperation rates, or length of hospital stay, but a higher lymph node harvest with RCME. Additional studies are needed to confirm these results and evaluate long-term oncologic outcomes.

Summary: In the current era of precision oncology, it is recognized that colorectal cancer (CRC) is a heterogeneous disease. The tumor location is crucial in determining disease progression and prognosis. The microbiome has been identified as an important factor in CRC, but previous studies have shown inconsistent results due to the heterogeneous nature of microbiomes and the lack of separate analysis of colon cancer (CC) and rectal cancer (RC). Our prospective study aimed to map the colon cancer landscape using 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing, and we found distinct microbiomes in right- and left-sided colon cancers, as well as a significant increase in potentially pathogenic bacteria in stool samples after surgery.

Summary: This study compared the intraoperative and short-term postoperative outcomes of robot-assisted surgery with laparoscopic surgery for left-sided colon cancer in Denmark. The results showed that robot-assisted surgery had a lower conversion rate and a higher lymph node yield compared to laparoscopic surgery, with similar postoperative complications and mortality rates.

Summary: This retrospective multicentre study aimed to assess the anastomotic leak rate after restorative surgery for rectal cancer, identify independent risk factors, and develop a clinical prediction model. The study found that factors such as sex, body mass index, tumour location, type of approach, and number of cartridges employed were independent risk factors for anastomotic leak. While a stoma did not reduce the leak rate, it significantly decreased the severity of leaks and reoperation rate.

Summary: This study assessed the use of the revised Cochrane risk of bias tool for randomized trials (RoB2) in systematic reviews (SRs). The results showed that many SRs did not adhere to RoB2 guidance and applied the tool at the study level instead of the outcome measure level. Low-quality reviews were more likely to lack adherence.

Summary: This systematic review analyzed the benefits and disadvantages of hemorrhoidal laser procedure (HeLP) for symptomatic hemorrhoids. The findings showed that HeLP effectively improved symptoms with low recurrence rate and few complications. However, the quality of evidence was low and more high-quality randomized controlled trials are needed to evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of HeLP.
