Summary: This paper investigates how to place a limited number of micro-phasor measurement units (mu PMUs) to improve the state estimation accuracy in the distribution network with increasing penetration of distributed generations. An optimal mu PMU placement model is proposed based on a two-step state estimation method, combining pseudo-measurements and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) measurements. The nonlinear optimization problem is transformed into a mixed-integer semidefinite programming (MISDP) problem, and the optimal solution is obtained by using the improved Benders decomposition method. Simulations on several systems evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed model.

Summary: This paper proposes a new method for optimal phasor measurement unit (PMU) placement (OPP) in smart grids. It considers the effects of conventional measurements, limited channels of PMUs, zero-injection buses (ZIBs), single PMU loss contingency, state estimation error (SEE), and the maximum SEE variance (MSEEV). A robust t-distribution maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) is used to obtain SEE and MSEEV, allowing for modeling of both Gaussian and non-Gaussian noises. The proposed OPP method is verified through simulations on various power systems.

Summary: In recent years, electrical substations have been transitioning toward a fully digital measurement infrastructure, using the IEC Std 61850-9-2 defined sampled value (SV) data format. This article presents the design and development of a stand-alone PMU based on digital inputs, which has been characterized in terms of estimation accuracy and enriched with a new functionality to monitor the time quality of the SV data stream. The results confirm the potential of SV-based PMUs and suggest further enhancement for synchrophasor measurements based on digital inputs only.

Summary: This article analyzes uncertainties associated with the estimation of line parameters, based on the equivalent pi model for short- and medium-length transmission lines. Measurements conducted on two 220-kV transmission lines show the importance of considering the correlation between voltage and current measurements when analyzing uncertainty propagation law. Accuracy limits were analyzed, with some results falling within calculated limits and others not following predictions, indicating the need for further improvements in determination of accuracy limits.

Summary: This article presents a scheme for cost-optimized PMU placement and associated CI design. It proposes a bus ranking algorithm that considers connectivity, branch lengths, and network coverage to incentivize redundancy and reduce CI requirement. A genetic algorithm is then used to find minimum-cost optimal PMU placement solutions within the ranked-bus order. The proposed scheme's performance is validated through comparison with existing algorithms and under channel-limit conditions.

Summary: The application of Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) in power systems is expanding rapidly due to their ability to provide fast, symmetric monitoring and protection, improving system reliability. However, challenges such as inappropriate threshold settings, longer computational times, and distinguishing between real islanding events and transient faults exist. Proper threshold setting is crucial for detecting islanding events and different PMU data analytic techniques can enhance system reliability.
