Summary: Contamination due to organic/inorganic composites is increasing rapidly, posing a major threat to food safety and the environment globally. Various physical and chemical methods have been explored for pollutant removal, but they are limited by high costs, inefficiency, toxic byproduct production, and high capital requirements. Therefore, it is crucial to develop environmentally friendly and economically viable approaches for achieving environmental sustainability. The use of nanoparticles and microbes has emerged as an efficient and effective method for remediating polluted soil and water. This review focuses on the application of nanoparticles and microbial inoculants in different sectors to eliminate lethal contaminants and promote sustainable development.

Summary: This research aimed to optimize an adsorption process for the removal of the non-biodegradable dye Eriochrome Black T (EBT) using native hazelnut shells as biosorbents. The study successfully demonstrated the effective removal of the dye and identified the optimal conditions for removal. The findings suggest that the utilized green and environmentally friendly sorbent can be used in real textile industries for the removal of dyes and heavy metals.

Summary: Xenobiotics are considered a major threat to human beings and the environment. Conventional wastewater treatment methods are ineffective in removing these contaminants, and bioelectrochemical systems (BES) offer promising potential for integrated wastewater treatment. BES utilizes the energy stored in wastes to treat them and has the advantage of simultaneously treating wastewater and producing bioenergy. Despite limitations, the global market for microbial fuel cells (a type of BES) is growing steadily.

Summary: While current technologies can generate high-quality water from wastewater, most wastewater treatment plants are not equipped to eliminate emerging xenobiotic pollutants, pharmaceuticals, and personal care products. Nanotechnology shows promise in better treating xenobiotic compounds accidentally released into the environment.

Summary: In this study, a mussel-inspired biosorbent combined with graphene oxide was developed for removing organic dyes from water sources. The composite was prepared by self-polymerization of dopamine in a weak alkaline solution containing graphene oxide. The morphology and structure analysis revealed that polydopamine gradually covered the surface of graphene oxide flakes, partially reduced these flakes, and formed small grains instead of large aggregates. The adsorption kinetics and isotherms of the biosorbent towards methylene blue followed pseudo-first order kinetics model and Langmuir isotherm. The as-prepared bio-sorbent shows great potential for remediating water sources contaminated with cationic organic molecules and heavy metal ions.

Summary: Ecological remediation with subsurface flow wetland is a widely used method for pollution abatement. The study found that subsurface flow wetlands have higher removal efficiency for TN compared to TP and COD. Additionally, higher water temperature, smaller flow velocity, and bigger water depth can improve the pollutants removal performance of subsurface flow wetlands.

Summary: The adsorption performance of mesoporous silica-based materials for inorganic and organic water pollutants was investigated. Different properties of the materials were tailored and characterized, and their influence on the removal of metal ions and organic dyes from aqueous solutions was explored. The results show that nanosized mesoporous silica nanoparticles with high surface area have a favorable adsorptive capacity for both types of water pollutants.
