The influenza A virus subtypes H1N1, H1N2 and H3N2 are prevalent in pig populations worldwide. In the present study, two relatively uncommon swine influenza virus (SIV) H1N2 subtypes, isolated in Sweden in 2009 and 2010, were compared regarding their molecular composition and biological characteristics. The differences regarding markers purportedly related to pathogenicity, host adaptation or replication efficiency. They included a truncated PB1-F2 protein in the earlier isolate but a full length version in the more recent one; differences in the number of haemagglutinin glycosylation sites, including a characteristic human one; and a nuclear export protein with altered export signal. Of particular interest, the NS1 amino acid sequence of swine H1N2-2009 and 2010 has a 'unique or very unusual' PDZ binding domain (RPKV) at the C-terminal of the protein, a motif that has been implicated as a virulence marker. Concerning biological properties, these viruses reached lower titre and showed reduced cytopathogenicity in MDCK cells compared with an avian-like H1N1 isolate A/swine/Lidkoping/1193/2002 belonging to the same lineage as the 2009 and 2010 isolates. The findings should contribute to better understanding of factors related to the survival/extinction of this uncommon reassortant variant.

Genetic Relationship Between Hard Ticks (Ixodidae) Infesting Cattle from Select Areas of a Wildlife-Livestock Interface Ecosystem at Mikumi National Park, Tanzania

Donath Damian, Modester Damas, Jonas Johansson Wensman, Mikael Berg

Summary: This study in Tanzania identified two genera and six species of ticks from cattle near the Mikumi National Park using morphological and molecular analysis. Results revealed significant genetic distances between the ticks, indicating potential biological diversity in the study area. The outcomes of this study will be valuable for planning integrated control strategies for ticks and tick-borne diseases in Tanzania, considering the importance of cattle in people's livelihoods and the economy of the country.

Summary: The study focused on investigating the prevalence of transboundary pathogens in sheep and goats along the Tanzania-Zambia border. Factors such as distance from international borders, towns, contact with wild ruminants, and presence of sheep in households were associated with seroprevalence of certain viruses and bacteria. Further large-scale studies are recommended to evaluate the impact of trade and proximity to borders, towns, and roads on the spread of diseases.

Summary: This study analyzed saliva samples from Myotis brandtii bats in south-central Sweden and identified viral sequences belonging to different families, including a previously unknown zoonotic virus (ISKV). Additionally, two novel viruses were characterized. These findings contribute to our understanding of the diversity of bat-borne viruses and the potential for zoonotic transmission to humans.

The order of events on Avian coronavirus life cycle shapes the order of quasispecies evolution during host switches

Summary: By monitoring the variants and viral load during cell passages, this study reveals that the emergence and frequency of variants during host switches of Avian coronavirus exhibit different patterns at different passages. Furthermore, the evolution sequence of the virus during spillovers corresponds to the order of its life cycle, leading to a stable overall fitness of the mutant spectrum.

Summary: Ticks play a crucial role as vectors and reservoirs of various pathogens, impacting human, livestock, and wildlife health. This study focused on the genetic diversity of hard tick species collected in the wildlife-livestock interface ecosystem at Mikumi National Park, Tanzania using mitochondrion 16S rRNA gene sequences, identifying six species and showcasing the biological diversity of hard ticks in the region. Further studies are needed to quantify the species of hard ticks in the study region and beyond.
