Summary: This study conducted a meta-analysis of 309 datasets from 110 countries to provide a more detailed and accurate description of HBV genotype and subgenotype distribution globally. The findings suggest that the differences in genotype distribution may be related to ethnicity and human migration in different regions.

Summary: This study aimed to analyze the Delta variants of SARS-CoV-2 and the characteristic signs and symptoms of patients infected with these variants during the Delta outbreak in Makassar. Whole genome sequencing was performed on PCR-positive samples obtained from COVID-19 patients between June and October 2021. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that the Delta variants had distinct mutations in the spike protein region, including T19R, L452R, T478K, D614G, P681R, and D950 N. The study highlights the importance of understanding the genetic changes in the Delta variants.

Summary: This study analyzed the SARS-CoV-2 virus in Makassar, South Sulawesi, Indonesia through genomic surveillance and identified two lineages, B.1.319 and B.1.466.2. The most common mutation in the spike protein region was D614G, followed by N439K and P681R. Several high-frequency mutations were also found in other genomes. The findings highlight the importance of continuous genomic surveillance to identify new viral mutations and variants that may impact public health.

Summary: This study investigated the CHIKV infection situation in North and South Sulawesi, Indonesia using samples from 1,092 healthy individuals collected between 2019 and 2020. The results showed CHIKV IgG seroprevalence of 53.2% and 53.9% in North and South Sulawesi, respectively. The overall prevalence of anti-CHIKV IgM antibody was 12.9%. Molecular testing revealed 0.66% (2/300) of blood donors were positive for CHIKV qRT-PCR. This study provides new insights into CHIKV endemicity in the eastern part of Indonesia and highlights the need for further systematic surveillance.

Summary: On January 15, 2021, a 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck the Mamuju and Majene regions of West Sulawesi, Indonesia, resulting in the deaths of over 100 inhabitants, displacement of at least 30,000 people, and significant damage to approximately 8,000 buildings within a 30 km radius of the epicenter. The earthquake was caused by an active fault that extends offshore West Sulawesi to the Makassar Strait Thrust. The understanding of the hazard potential of this fault is still limited.

Summary: This study aims to quantify the carbon stocks of mangroves and soil affected by aquaculture pond expansions in the Barru District, South Sulawesi Province. The results show that the carbon stocks of aboveground and belowground mangrove biomass and soil organic carbon were lower in this region compared to other regions in Indonesia. Protecting intact mangrove areas and rehabilitating degraded areas are crucial for conserving blue carbon and mitigating climate change.

Summary: The spatial variation and potential linkage of type 2 diabetes and hypertension were explored in South Sulawesi Province, Indonesia. Global Moran's I and regression analysis were used to identify the characteristics involved. The analysis was based on data from 2017 and 2018 acquired from Social Health Insurance Administration in Indonesia. The findings showed that type 2 diabetes and hypertension have a random spatial distribution, and there is a significant relationship between the two conditions.

Summary: This report provides a comprehensive understanding of the global prevalence and geographic distribution of hepatitis B virus (HBV) genotype D (HBV/D) subgenotypes through the review of its history, misclassifications, and large-scale analysis of over 1000 HBV/D complete genome sequences. The recent paleogenomic findings also shed light on the origins of modern HBV/D strains. Additionally, the distinct disease outcomes and responses to antiviral therapy among HBV/D subgenotypes are discussed, highlighting the importance of HBV subgenotyping in hepatitis B management and treatment.

Summary: This article explores how traditional ecological knowledge in Cerekang, South Sulawesi, Indonesia, is culturally transmitted as a strategy for cultural survival amidst internal and external challenges. The knowledge is transmitted through oral stories, rituals, daily life, and customary organization, with various modes of transmission. However, the transmitted messages are biased, suggesting a need for contextual education in formal and informal settings to sustain this traditional ecological knowledge.

Summary: The archaeology of Sulawesi is crucial for understanding human dispersal in central Island Southeast Asia. The Toalean people in the region had a strong cultural identity, with potential cultural exchanges with other regions such as Australia, Java, and Japan. More research and clarification of Toalean artifact typologies are needed to better understand the material culture and changes in the region over time.
