Considering that Toxoplasma gondii is a parasite of global importance which affects several animal species including humans, the current study aimed to investigate the prevalence of antibodies against T. gondii among 72 white-eared opossums (Didelphis albiventris) from Botucatu Municipality (22 degrees 53'S 48 degrees 26'W), Sao Paulo State, Brazil. The investigation was carried out from January 2008 to December 2009, when the animals had their blood samples collected and subjected to the modified agglutination test (MAT); 12 specimens had brain samples bioassayed in mice. Seroprevalence was 5.5% (n = 4) and bioassays were negative. Older animals had higher prevalence of antibodies against T. gondii. Opossums in closer contact with the urban environment are likely more exposed to T. gondii than animals from the sylvatic environment. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Antimicrobial resistance, biofilm production and invasion of mammary epithelial cells by Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus mundtii strains isolated from bovine subclinical mastitis in Brazil

D. S. Rodrigues, P. S. Lannes-Costa, G. S. Santos, R. L. Ribeiro, H. Langoni, L. M. Teixeira, P. E. Nagao

Summary: Enterococcus isolates recovered from bovine subclinical mastitis in Brazil showed clonal diversity and multidrug resistance, with most identified as Enterococcus faecalis. These isolates were capable of forming biofilms in milk, invading mammary epithelial cells, and demonstrated increasing resistance to antibiotics.

One Health Approach in Serosurvey of Toxoplasma gondii in Former Black Slave (Quilombola) Communities in Southern Brazil and Among Their Dogs

Giovanni Kalempa Panazzolo, Louise Bach Kmetiuk, Orlei Jose Domingues, Joao Henrique Farinhas, Fernando Rodrigo Doline, Danilo Alves de Franca, Nassarah Jabur Lot Rodrigues, Leandro Meneguelli Biondo, Rogerio Giuffrida, Helio Langoni, Vamilton Alvares Santarem, Alexander Welker Biondo, Giovani Marino Favero

Summary: Brazilian quilombos are communities of former black slaves and their descendants, who traditionally relied on outdated subsistence practices and lacked public health policies. A study found that 44.7% of individuals and 63.0% of dogs in four different quilombos were seropositive for T. gondii antibodies. Human consumption of game meat increased the likelihood of seropositivity, while no risk factors were associated with dogs. Higher seroprevalence among dogs may be due to interaction with wildlife or exposure to contaminated food and water sources. Future studies should investigate various sources of infection in dogs, including water, soil, wildlife, and livestock tissues.

Summary: Leptospirosis is a neglected but globally important zoonotic disease, and a holistic approach combining human, animal, and environmental health is crucial for its control. Dogs and humans can both serve as potential sources of infection, and there is a correlation between rainfall and the number of human cases.

Summary: Fatalities involving collisions between wildlife and automotive vehicles on roads and highways pose a severe threat to the conservation of various terrestrial vertebrate species worldwide, with significant social and economic implications. This study focused on analyzing the collisions with fauna on a specific park road, recording the deaths of 80 individuals belonging to 27 species over a three-year period, with reptiles being the most affected group. Temporal variations in fatalities were found to be related to traffic intensity and the seasonal response of herpetofauna.
