The aim of the study was to determine if cattle breeds differing in their carcass characteristics also differ in the profiles of their leptin and metabolic hormones. Three breeds, Belgian Blue (BB) (n = 12), Limousin (L) (n = 12) and Aberdeen Angus (AA) (n = 12) with varying ability to deposit fat and protein were compared. Blood, muscle and subcutaneous (SC) adipose tissue were sampled. Animal performance, carcass and meat characteristics were determined as well as plasma leptin concentration, leptin gene expression in SC adipose tissue, leptin-receptor gene expression in SC adipose tissue and plasma concentration of insulin, tri-iodothyronin (T3), thyroxin (T4) and cortisol. The BB bulls showed the lowest values of leptin gene expression (P < 0.05). Values of plasma leptin concentration and of leptin-receptor gene expression tended to be lower in BB than in the other breeds. For a similar amount of adipose tissue (after normalisation), BB bulls showed a higher ratio of plasma leptin (P < 0.05), whereas normalised leptin gene and leptin-receptor gene expressions did not significantly differ between breeds. Belgian Blue bulls also differed in their metabolic hormone profile, tending to show lower values of insulin, T3 and T4 than the two other breeds. Cortisol levels were significantly lower (P < 0.05) in BB than in L and AA animals. (C) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Summary: Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a significant public health issue in Morocco, and vaccination of sheep with the EG95 vaccine has the potential to reduce the incidence of the disease. However, 4-monthly treatment of owned dogs with praziquantel alone did not have a major impact on E. granulosus transmission to sheep.

Summary: The study evaluated seasonal variations in the chemical composition and in vitro digestibility of plant species browsed by goats in the Southern Mediterranean forest rangeland of northern Morocco. Most plant species showed highest nutritive value in spring and lowest in summer and autumn. With good grazing management, goats can ensure high-quality feeding resources throughout the year.

Summary: Senegal, like other Sahelian countries, is an important livestock area with almost 36% of its livestock being goats. By focusing on improving animal husbandry, providing added value to goat products, and structuring the goat sector, a study aims to understand local goat rearing systems and propose ways for improvement.

Summary: This study used GPS and sensor technologies to investigate the grazing behavior and energy balance of goats in forest rangelands. The results showed that the grazing behavior and energy requirements of goats were influenced by seasonal changes, and the use of GPS collars and leg sensors proved to be an effective method for studying their grazing activities.

Effect of Olive Cake and Cactus Cladodes Incorporation in Goat Kids' Diet on the Rumen Microbial Community Profile and Meat Fatty Acid Composition

Samira El Otmani, Youssef Chebli, Bernard Taminiau, Mouad Chentouf, Jean-Luc Hornick, Jean-Francois Cabaraux

Summary: The use of alternative feed resources like olive cake and cactus cladodes did not significantly change the bacterial abundance and diversity in the rumen of goat kids. The rumen liquor of the goats seemed to adapt well to digest the alternative feed resources without negative effects on meat fatty acids. Incorporating these alternative feed resources could help diversify the diet of goats and reduce feed costs.

Youssef Chebli, Samira El Otmani, Jean-Luc Hornick, Jerome Bindelle, Jean-Francois Cabaraux, Mouad Chentouf

Summary: This study utilized advanced electronic sensors to investigate the grazing activity and protein-energy requirements of dairy goats in a Mediterranean woodland, finding that grazing time was shorter in summer and protein-energy intake often insufficient. The combination of GPS collars and accelerometers provided valuable insights for goat-feeding strategies.

Floristic Composition, Diversity, Palatability, and Forage Availability of Forest Rangelands in the Southern Mediterranean Region of Northern Morocco

Youssef Chebli, Mouad Chentouf, Jean-Francois Cabaraux, Samira El Otmani

Summary: The aim of this study was to investigate the floristic composition, lifespan, life forms, phytogeographic relationships, palatability degree, and forage availability of forest rangelands in Northern Morocco. A total of 358 taxa were recorded, belonging to 228 genera and 66 families. The flora was dominated by Asteraceae, Fabaceae, Poaceae, and Lamiaceae families. The palatable plant group was highly represented with 32 species, and 93% of the identified taxa were evaluated as potential sources of forage. Forest rangelands have a high biodiversity and require rigorous protection to preserve their floristic composition and diversity.

Assessment of physicochemical parameters, bioactive compounds, biological activities, and nutritional value of the most two commercialized pollen types of date palm (Phoenix dactylifera L.) in Morocco

Saad Salhi, Mouad Chentouf, Hasnaa Harrak, Abdellatif Rahim, Cansel Cakir, Dilaycan cam, Mehmet Ozturk, Naima Hamidallah, Jean-Francois Cabaraux, Bouchra El Amiri

Summary: This study evaluated the physicochemical and phytochemical parameters, biological activities, and nutritional value of pure date palm pollen and date palm pollen crushed with its spadix. Pure date palm pollen had higher humidity, water activity, and lightness (L*) than date palm pollen crushed with its spadix, but lower total soluble solids and ash contents. Pure date palm pollen exhibited higher antioxidant activity, while date palm pollen crushed with its spadix showed higher enzyme inhibitory and antidiabetic activities. Pure date palm pollen was a rich source of proteins, carbohydrates, minerals, and saturated fatty acids, while date palm pollen crushed with its spadix was a better source of unsaturated fatty acids, mainly linoleic acid. In conclusion, pure date palm pollen has higher nutritional value and can be a valuable supplement for various health applications.

Effects of Sulla Flexuosa Hay as Alternative Feed Resource on Goat's Milk Production and Quality

Soumaya Boukrouh, Ali Noutfia, Nassim Moula, Claire Avril, Jean-Luc Hornick, Mouad Chentouf, Jean-Francois Cabaraux

Summary: Sulla flexuosa, a phenolic-rich legume, can be used as an alternative feed resource for goats without affecting milk production or physicochemical composition. Incorporating a higher amount of Sulla flexuosa in the diet improves antioxidant capacity and introduces healthier fatty acids in milk. Therefore, Sulla flexuosa can be used as an interesting alternative forage in goat diets.
