Survivin, a member of the inhibitor of apoptosis protein (IAP) family, is ubiquitously expressed during tissue development, undetectable in most normal tissues, but re-expressed in most cancers, including skin malignancies. Expression of survivin was evaluated retrospectively in 19 canine cutaneous squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs; one in situ; 16 well differentiated; one invasive, one lymph node metastasis) and 19 well differentiated SCCs from human beings. Seven specimens of normal canine skin were included. Immunohistochemical expression of full-length survivin was determined using a commercially available antibody. In addition, apoptotic rate [Terminal deoxynucleotidyl Transferase Biotin-dUTP Nick End Labelling index (TUNEL) index] and mitotic index (MI), counting mitoses in 10 high power fields (HPF), were determined. Scattered survivin positive nuclei were identified in the epidermal basal cell layer of normal canine skin. Nuclear survivin expression was identified in 18 of 19 human and in all canine SCCs, mainly along the base of the tumour cell population. Cytoplasmic survivin expression was rarely observed in human SCCs and in 84.2% of canine SCCs. The TUNEL index ranged from 0.1 to 2.6 in human beings and from 7.5 to 69.4 in dogs, while MIs ranged from 0 to 4 in human beings and dogs. No correlation was found between survivin expression and apoptotic or mitotic rates. Canine and human tumours showed similar nuclear survivin expression, indicating similar functions of the molecule. We demonstrated survivin expression in normal adult canine epidermis. Increased nuclear survivin expression in pre-neoplastic and neoplastic lesions demonstrates a possible association of survivin with development of SCCs in human beings and dogs.

An Update on Molecular Pathways Regulating Vasculogenic Mimicry in Human Osteosarcoma and Their Role in Canine Oncology

Marcella Massimini, Mariarita Romanucci, Raffaella De Maria, Leonardo Della Salda

Summary: Canine tumors serve as valuable models for researching novel biomarkers and metastasis pathways; vasculogenic mimicry, a unique property of malignant cancer cells, offers opportunities for investigating molecular mechanisms and therapeutic targets related to metastasis.

New insights about Haplosporidium pinnae and the pen shell Pinna nobilis mass mortality events

Pietro Giorgio Tiscar, Fernando Rubino, Barbara Paoletti, Cristina E. Di Francesco, Francesco Mosca, Leonardo Della Salda, Jasmine Hattab, Camilla Smoglica, Simone Morelli, Giovanni Fanelli

Summary: Since early autumn 2016, Mass Mortality Events (MME) have greatly affected the population of the fan mussel Pinna nobilis in the Mediterranean Sea. A newly described Haplosporidian species, Haplosporidium pinnae, is believed to be the causative agent of the mortality outbreak, along with opportunistic bacterial pathogens. In this study, we provided a cytological description of H. pinnae in moribund specimens of P. nobilis collected in the Gulf of Taranto. Molecular analysis also revealed the presence of bacteria from the Mycobacterium ulcerans-M. marinum complex.

Health and Mortality Monitoring in Threatened Mammals: A First Post Mortem Study of Otters (Lutra lutra L.) in Italy

Romina Fusillo, Mariarita Romanucci, Manlio Marcelli, Marcella Massimini, Leonardo Della Salda

Summary: The study of post-mortem examination of Eurasian otters in Italy revealed that vehicle collision was the main cause of death, especially in young individuals, and measures need to be taken to reduce the risk. Most otters were in good nutritional condition and between 1 and 3 years old. Necropsy examinations showed different signs of disease in some individuals, but ticks and endoparasites were rarely detected.

Comparison between Image-Guided Transbronchial Cryobiopsies and Thoracoscopic Lung Biopsies in Canine Cadaver: A Pilot Study

Ilaria Falerno, Roberto Tamburro, Francesco Collivignarelli, Leonardo Della Salda, Luigi Navas, Rossella Terragni, Paolo Emidio Crisi, Andrea Paolini, Francesco Simeoni, Massimo Vignoli

Summary: This study evaluates the feasibility and diagnostic yield of pulmonary cryobiopsy compared to surgical lung biopsy (SLB) in dogs. The results show that cryobiopsy samples are smaller than SLB samples but still provide sufficient tissue for diagnosis. Cryobiopsy samples have fewer artifacts and a higher percentage of alveolar tissue compared to SLB samples. Therefore, pulmonary cryobiopsy is a feasible and useful alternative to SLB for lung histopathological examination in dogs.

A Magnetic Resonance-Relaxometry-Based Technique to Identify Blood Products in Brain Parenchyma: An Experimental Study on a Rabbit Model

Summary: In this study, a T1 and T2-based relaxometry approach was developed to characterize subtle brain lesions obtained with autologous blood injections in rabbits. The approach involved a semi-automatic hierarchical classification of different regions based on their relaxometry properties. The study utilized a low-field scanner commonly found in veterinary clinics. The proposed classifier demonstrated moderate accuracy in lesion characterization.

Echocardiographic measurements and cardiac anatomy in healthy Western hognose snakes (Heterodon nasicus)

Matteo Oliveri, Cristina Carnabuci, Massimo Vignoli, Simone DI Feliciantonio, Marco DI Feliciantonio, Leonardo DELLA Salda, Zdenek Knotek, Morena DI Tommaso, Alessia Luciani

Summary: The study aimed to describe the important cardiac structures in Heterodon nasicus using echocardiography and anatomical dissection. Echocardiographic measurements were performed on healthy adult Heterodon nasicus, and the measurements of ventricular length, aortic diameter, pulmonary trunk diameter, and thicknesses of the interventricular septum and wall of the cavum pulmonale and cavum arteriosum were recorded. Aortic flow and pulmonary trunk flow were also measured. Dissection of two specimens was done. The study found differences in pulmonary trunk diameter between male and female Heterodon nasicus, and a moderate interventricular right to left shunt in all specimens.

Strain and Shear-Wave Elastography and Their Relationship to Histopathological Features of Canine Mammary Nodular Lesions

Marcella Massimini, Alessia Gloria, Mariarita Romanucci, Leonardo Della Salda, Lucia Di Francesco, Alberto Contri

Summary: This study compared two different sonoelastography methods in evaluating canine mammary lesions. The results showed that shear-wave elastography was more replicable compared to strain elastography, and both techniques were correlated with the amount of connective tissue in the lesions. However, both techniques were unable to distinguish between benign and malignant mammary tumors due to the wide variable content in the connective tissue. Therefore, sonoelastography can be useful in characterizing connective tissue content in canine mammary tumors but should be used in conjunction with other techniques to evaluate the malignancy of the lesions.
