Summary: This study explores the changes in canine olfaction by using a novel test involving hidden food treat and spontaneous behaviors. The results show that senior/geriatric dogs perform worse in the dark-phase but still above chance, while control dogs perform better. In addition, a positive correlation is found between performance in the dark-phase and cognitive decline based on an owner questionnaire.

Summary: Research has shown that in life-threatening circumstances, supportive behaviors prevail, with motives behind these behaviors often rooted in cooperation and altruism rather than individualism. Factors such as inability to escape, minimal protection from danger, and interpersonal closeness with others contribute to higher reports of supportive behaviors during mass shootings.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of a high-fat diet on the central nervous system by examining its effects on various behaviors in zebrafish. The results show that short-term high-fat diet leads to obesity and altered behaviors such as increased aggression and anxiety-like responses. However, social preference behavior and swimming speed remain unaffected by high-fat diet.

Summary: Canine cognitive dysfunction syndrome (CCDS) is a neurodegenerative disorder in older dogs, similar to early stages of Alzheimer's disease in humans. A study using an online questionnaire found that dogs with more severe cognitive dysfunction also showed more signs of musculoskeletal and neurological problems, including pain and sensory decline. The study suggests that older dogs should be carefully screened for medical conditions, especially pain, sensory decline, and digestive and metabolic disorders, when cognitive dysfunction is suspected.

Summary: This study found that injection of MG in rats led to decreased locomotor activity, anxiolytic effects, and impaired short and long-term memory and spatial memory. It also resulted in decreased hippocampal glutamate uptake, glutamine synthetase activity, and glutathione levels. The findings suggest that MG may contribute to brain dysfunction observed in diabetic patients and shed light on the role of astrocytes in disease and therapeutics.

Summary: A large body of research suggests that exaggerated response to uncertainty of a future threat is central to anxiety and related disorders. However, little is known about which elements of uncertainty are more susceptible to cognitive modulation in shaping aversive responses. This study used a novel paradigm to investigate the effects of cognitive load on different facets of uncertainty in psychophysiological responses. The results provide insight into the model of fear and anxiety and the etiology of psychological disorders characterized by maladaptive uncertainty responses.

Summary: This study aimed to understand the changes in canine stress during a veterinary visit, examine the effect of music, and identify practical measures. The results indicated that dogs experienced changes in physiology and behavior, indicative of increased stress, over the course of the visit. Music did not show a significant effect on alleviating stress in dogs, suggesting that modifications may be needed for music therapy to be successful during a veterinary visit.

Summary: The study found that higher levels of perceived threat of COVID-19 were associated with a decrease in purchasing frequency and an increase in purchasing quantity. Additionally, higher levels of intolerance of uncertainty and greater media exposure were positively correlated with perceived threat of COVID-19 and an increase in purchasing quantity.

Summary: This study investigates the relationship between chronotype, drug use, and mental health problems. The results show that chronotype is significantly associated with overall mental health and anxiety levels, but not with depression or stress levels. However, these relationships are fully mediated by participants' drug consumption.

Summary: Machine-learning prediction studies have shown potential to inform treatment stratification, but recent efforts to predict psychotherapy outcomes with clinical routine data have only resulted in moderate prediction accuracies. Neuroimaging data did not provide any incremental accuracy for treatment outcome prediction in patients with spider phobia with respect to clinical and sociodemographic data alone.

Summary: This study investigated owners' perception of noise anxiety severity in horses, management strategies, and efficacy. The results revealed two clusters of noise anxiety in horses: very anxious and slightly anxious. Management strategies like providing hay or turning out horses were reported to be more effective in slightly anxious horses. Noise anxiety is a widespread behavioral problem that can lead to negative welfare consequences for horses.

Summary: Canine and feline cognitive dysfunction syndrome is a common neurodegenerative disorder of old age and a natural model of human Alzheimer's disease. With the unavoidable expanding life expectancy, an increasing number of small animals will be affected. Although there is no cure, early detection and intervention are vitally important to delay cognitive decline.

Summary: This study compared imagery-enhanced cognitive behavior therapy (IE-CBT) with verbally-based cognitive behavior therapy (VB-CBT) for social anxiety disorder (SAD). The results showed no significant differences in the reduction of social anxiety symptoms and clinical severity between the two treatments. The majority of patients achieved remission following both treatments.

Summary: The stress response has a significant impact on the central nervous system and other systems in the body, contributing to chronic mental and behavioral pathologies as well as increasing the risk for other chronic inflammatory and metabolic diseases. Psychiatric treatments play a role in alleviating fear, stress, and anxiety and improving the quality of life and lifespan for dogs and cats. The availability of safe psychoactive medications allows for effective treatment options in veterinary patients. Clinicians should have a good understanding of the role neurotransmitters and hormones play in emotional processing, cognition, and behavior, as well as the mechanism of action of drugs to ensure appropriate medication selection for each individual patient.

Summary: Inappropriate elimination or behavioral periuria/perichezia is a commonly reported feline behavioral problem worldwide. Changes in behavior are often early signs of physical illness and can worsen existing behavioral issues. Determining the cause, whether medical or behavioral, is crucial before implementing appropriate treatments.
