This study was carried out to better understand the epidemiology of hantaviruses in a province of Turkey (Giresun) where human hantavirus disease has recently been detected. In this cross-sectional study, a total of 626 blood samples from healthy people aged 15 and 84 years old were collected both in urban and rural areas in 2009. The sera were tested by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), immunoblotting assay, and the focus reduction neutralization test (FRNT). We screened the samples by an ELISA and found that 65/626 samples reacted positively for the presence of hantavirus-reactive immunoglobulin G (IgG). Twenty of the 65 ELISA-positive samples could be confirmed by an immunobloting assay, and the overall seroprevalence was thereby calculated to 3.2% (20/626). The seroprevalence of the people living in wood areas or adobe houses 9/17 (52.9%) was significantly higher than among people living in concrete houses 10/47 (21.3%) (p = 0.014). Finally, 3 of the 20 immunoblot-positive sera were confirmed as specific for the Puumala hantavirus serotype by FRNT, 1 serum was confirmed as Dobrava virus-specific, whereas 1 serum was found to be equally reactive to Dobrava and Saaremaa viruses. We will now focus on further investigations of the ecology and epidemiology of hantaviruses in humans and their carrier animals in Turkey, studies that have already been started and will be further intensified.

Molecular characterization of human adenoviruses associated with respiratory infection in Turkey

Aliye Bastug, Ayse Basak Altas, Bahattin Taylan Koc, Fatma Bayrakdar, Gulay Korukluoglu, Hurrem Bodur, Tuba Cigdem Oguzoglu

Summary: This study investigated the molecular epidemiology of respiratory HAdVs in patients with respiratory symptoms in Turkey. The most prevalent genotype was HAdV-B3, and HAdV-F was detected in some patients despite its typical gastrointestinal tropism. HAdV-B7 was identified as a reemerging pathogen in this study, along with a cluster of HAdV-C strains showing a close relationship with HAdV-2/6 recombination.

Higher viral loads in asymptomatic COVID-19 patients might be the invisible part of the iceberg

Summary: This study demonstrates that asymptomatic patients have higher SARSCoV-2 viral loads than symptomatic patients. Unlike in the few studies in the literature, a significant decrease in viral load of nasopharyngeal/oropharyngeal samples was observed with increasing disease severity. Factors associated with poor prognosis are found to be significantly correlated with low viral load.

Summary: This study examined national data of AFP surveillance and enteroviruses (EV) epidemiology in Turkey from 2000 to 2019, and found that the higher detection rate of non-polio enteroviruses (NPEV) in samples from AFP pre-diagnosed cases may be attributed to the high polio vaccination rates in Turkey between 2008 and 2019. The most frequently detected NPEV serotypes were Coxackie A24, B3, and Echo 30.

Summary: This study evaluated surveillance of healthcare workers and estimated the serial interval and incubation period of COVID-19, finding that these parameters were shorter in healthcare workers compared to the general population. Rigorous contact tracing and isolation measures could have led to shorter serial intervals, suggesting the need for stricter control measures focused on transmission between healthcare workers in hospital settings.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the safety and immunogenicity of CoronaVac and TURKOVAC vaccines used as a booster dose after CoronaVac primary vaccination. The results showed that neutralizing antibody titers decrease over time after two doses of CoronaVac vaccine. However, the booster dose of either CoronaVac or TURKOVAC rapidly increased neutralizing antibody titers, with similar effects against the Wuhan variant and more antibodies developed against the Delta variant with TURKOVAC.

Summary: This study aimed to present the long-term immunogenicity results of the double-blind, randomized, controlled phase II Hybrid COV-RAPEL TR Study, in which TURKOVAC or CoronaVac vaccines were used as a booster after the second dose of primary vaccination with CoronaVac. The results showed that a single booster dose increased antibody positivity on Day 28, which persisted until Day 84 with a slight decrease. However, an additional booster dose may be required thereafter, as the antibody titer may decrease faster over time.
