Summary: Traditional Chinese medicine has been practiced for treating human diseases for thousands of years, where one of its advantages is the principle of herb compatibility in TCM formulae, consisting of multiple herbs to achieve maximum treatment effects. A network-based method was proposed to quantify interactions in herb pairs, revealing that frequently used herb pairs tend to affect neighboring proteins in the human interactome. The study provides a network pharmacology framework to explore herb combinations more effectively based on network topology.

Summary: Managing hemorrhagic diseases and commonly refractory diseases in clinical practice is a challenge. Charcoal medicine is often used as a complementary therapy, but research on charcoal-processed medicines is limited. Carbon dots, as biocompatible and stable nanoparticles, have gained attention for their potential use in treating common diseases. This review summarizes literature on medicinal herbs-derived carbon dots for the treatment of difficult-to-treat diseases and explores possible treatment mechanisms.

Summary: Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has been used for over 2000 years, but modern research on its safety is limited. Zebrafish has been increasingly used as a model for toxicity research, offering low cost, high-throughput screening, and exemption from ethical legislation up to 5 dpf. Although zebrafish shows promise in evaluating TCM toxicity, further development of toxicity testing criteria and high throughput assays are needed.

Summary: Chronic pain is a common health problem, and the current medication options have limited effectiveness and side effects. Alkaloids from traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) have been studied for their potential multi-target effects. This article introduces several well-studied analgesic alkaloids derived from TCM and their mechanisms and clinical applications, using the concept of drug-cloud (dCloud) theory. Drug combinations and the combination of herbal drugs with specific properties in TCM are explored for better therapeutic effects.

Summary: Insomnia is a significant public health problem, and the available treatments might have adverse effects. This study aimed to find OX1R and OX2R antagonists for insomnia treatment from traditional Chinese medicine. A ligand library of small-molecule compounds from medicinal plants, with verified hypnotic effects, was established. Virtual screening and assays confirmed the potential lead compound neferine as an orexin receptor antagonist.

Summary: Traditional Chinese medicine, specifically the herb Northern Ban Lan, is known for its antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties. Researchers have found that extracts from Northern Ban Lan exhibit anti-microtubular activity, with the main bioactive compound identified as glucobrassicin. This compound has the ability to affect microtubules and induce apoptosis in HeLa cells, shedding light on the potential antiviral mechanisms of Northern Ban Lan through disruption of microtubule function utilized by viral pathogens for cell-to-cell spread.
