Summary: The study found that routine antibiotic prophylaxis could be spared in patients with kidney stones and unremarkable preoperative urine culture, effectively reducing antibiotic usage. Patients with (partial) staghorn stones or infectious stone components are at higher risk of postoperative fever.

Summary: This pilot study demonstrates the potential utility of prone CT scans in preoperative planning for prone PCNL. Prone scans can help identify patients with longer or shorter tract lengths, and also reveal more potential organ interceptions, particularly for low BMI and women in the left upper pole.

Summary: This study analyzed the appropriateness of antibiotic prophylaxis in dental visits and found that unnecessary antibiotic prophylaxis was highly prevalent but decreased over time. Factors associated with unnecessary prophylaxis included age, sex, geographic region, rurality, type of antibiotic, and dental procedure. Antimicrobial stewardship strategies targeting dentists are needed.

Summary: This study aimed to compare the effects of different preoperative antibiotic prophylaxis regimens on the incidence of postoperative sepsis. It was found that administering antibiotics for 3 days before surgery did not reduce the incidence of sepsis in patients with negative urine cultures undergoing PCNL. Body mass index and operating time were identified as independent risk factors for sepsis.

Summary: There are variations among different guidelines and recommendations from different countries and institutions regarding the necessity of prophylactic antibiotics for high-risk cardiac patients before dental treatments. While the UK's NICE and SDCEP do not recommend prophylactic antibiotics for the majority of high-risk cardiac patients undergoing routine dental treatments, the AHA, ESC, and KEC recommend the use of antibiotics in such cases.

Summary: This study systematically investigates the risk factors for the development of wound infections after percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) placement. The study found that 25% of patients developed wound infections after PEG tube insertion, and 6.5% experienced recurrent infections. Risk factors included nicotine abuse, previous ischemic stroke, and head and neck cancer.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate whether topical antibiotic prophylaxis in patients scheduled for intravitreal injections achieves surface sterility in a greater proportion of subjects compared to povidone-iodine alone. The results showed that both chloramphenicol and netilmicin drops reduced the bacterial load on the conjunctiva, but after the application of povidone-iodine, there was a significant reduction in non-sterile swabs in all groups, and this reduction was comparable among all groups. Therefore, the authors concluded that povidone-iodine alone is sufficient and prior topical antibiotic prophylaxis is not indicated.

Summary: The importance of puncture in percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PNL) in current urological literature is subjectively high but objectively low. Although puncture is considered a crucial part of PNL, there are no universally accepted definitions and standards measuring its quality, leading to a lack of systematic study on its impact on general PNL complications and surgeons' performance evaluation. Additionally, some basics of puncture are not well understood in urology, with other disciplines being more actively involved in the development of puncture techniques.

Summary: This study found a significant temporal association between invasive dental procedures (IDPs), particularly extractions and oral-surgical procedures, and subsequent infective endocarditis (IE) in individuals at high-risk for IE. The use of antibiotic prophylaxis (AP) was associated with a significant reduction in IE incidence following these procedures.

Summary: In women planning a vaginal delivery, a single oral dose of azithromycin significantly reduced the risk of maternal sepsis or death compared to placebo, but had little effect on newborn sepsis or death.

Summary: The study aimed to compare the outcomes of two different protocols of antibiotic prophylaxis in patients with positive urine culture undergoing PCNL. The results showed no difference in infectious complication rates between patients who received 1 week of sensitive antibiotics and those who received shorter duration of prophylaxis with sensitive antibiotics for 48 hours prior to procedure.

Summary: Patients undergoing radical cystectomy are at high risk of infectious complications, but there is wide variability in the use of antibiotics and ureteric stents, and duration of treatment. More studies and quality prospective trials are needed to address this issue.

Summary: PCNL has evolved over time and can be performed in supine position in most situations, reducing pressure in the renal pelvis and allowing for natural clearance of fragments by gravity-directed flow of fluid. It also provides the surgeon with the opportunity to perform flexible ureteroscopy.
