Purpose: To predict the invasiveness of urothelial bladder carcinoma using a logistic regression model on preoperative peripheral blood samples. Patients and Methods: Hospital data of patients operated for urothelial carcinoma were reviewed retrospectively. Preoperative blood samples were collected before the first cystoscopic examination. Any kind of infection or inflammation was an exclusion criterion. Patients were grouped as having a non-muscle-invasive or muscle-invasive urothelial carcinoma. The mean age was 69 years and was determined as the cut-off value. According to receiver operating characteristic curves, threshold points were determined for lymphocytes, neutrophil count, neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), thrombocytes and mean platelet volume. Demographic specialties, parameters obtained from blood samples, tumor size and multiplicity were evaluated and significant parameters were put into a logistic regression model. Results: The study group consisted of 80 non-muscle-invasive and 102 muscle-invasive patients. Age (<= 69 vs. >69), female gender, NLR (2.57), mean platelet volume (7.9/fl) and platelet count (400,000/mu l) were significant parameters and put in a model. Using odds ratios, the probability of tumor invasiveness was calculated by a formula. Conclusion: Age, female gender, NLR and platelet count were found to be the predictors of invasiveness of urothelial carcinoma. Copyright (c) 2012 S. Karger AG, Basel

Should haematological inflammatory markers be included as an adjuvant in the differential diagnosis of acute scrotal pathologies?

Mehmet Yilmaz, Yusuf Sahin, Ibrahim Hacibey, Unsal Ozkuvanci, Serhat Suzan, Ahmet Yaser Muslumanoglu

Summary: The aim of this study was to investigate the discriminative role of haematological inflammatories between acute scrotal pathologies and malignancies, and to find a predictive marker for testicular survival in TT patients. The results showed that NLR, MCV, and CRP played important roles in differentiating between diseases and predicting testicular survival in patients.

4-Hydroxycoumarin Effects on Both Cellular and Genetic Characteristics of Hepatocellular Carcinoma Cells

Cagri Oner, Dilara Soyergin, Ahmet Ozyurt, Ertugrul Colak

Summary: 4-Hydroxycoumarin has an impact on the behavior of HepG2 cells, including viability, proliferation, adhesion, and gene expression. It decreases proliferation and viability of HepG2 cells while increasing cell adhesion. The expression of genes Ki-67, MMP-2, MMP-9, and piR-823 is regulated by 4-Hydroxycoumarin. The findings suggest that 4-Hydroxycoumarin could be useful in treating hepatocellular carcinoma.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate vitamin K levels in patients with fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) and their relationship with pain, disease activity, quality of life, and inflammatory cytokines. The results showed no significant differences in vitamin K levels between the FMS group and the control group, and no relationships were found between vitamin K levels and pain, disease activity, quality of life, and inflammatory cytokines. However, high levels of IL-6 and TNF-alpha were observed in the FMS group, indicating a potential association between low-intensity inflammation and FMS.

Summary: This study compared the human leukocyte antigen (HLA) genotypes of 27 subacute thyroiditis (SAT) patients (13 vaccine-associated and 14 non-SARS-CoV-2-infection non-vaccine-associated) with those of 362 healthy donors. It found that the A*11-B*35-C*04 haplotype, including all three loci of MHC class I genes, was associated with the disease, especially in the vaccine-associated SAT group. This finding contributes to a better understanding of the etiopathogenesis of vaccine-associated SAT and the role of HLA genotypes in the functioning mechanisms of the SARS-CoV-2 vaccines.

ePIWI Interacting RNA-823: Epigenetic Regulator of The Triple Negative Breast Cancer Cells Proliferation

Cagri Oner, Ertugrul Colak

Summary: In this study, the effects of piR-823 inhibition on the genetic parameters of proliferation and ER alpha status in MDA-MB-231 cells were investigated. The results showed that piR-823 inhibition led to an increase in ERa expression and a decrease in hTERT expression. Additionally, the inhibition also affected the PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway and miR-126 expression. These findings highlight the importance of piRNAs in regulating cellular characteristics of triple negative breast cancer cells, and suggest that piRNA expression changes may impact miRNA expressions.
