Summary: This paper investigates the effects of crystal structures of manganese, tellurium, and selenium elements on chirality, and resolves the presence of two physically different variants in crystallographic analyses. The study demonstrates the sensitivity of dynamical Kikuchi diffraction in scanning electron microscope to the local sense of chirality in crystals of single chemical elements.

Summary: This study introduces a reconstruction process to evaluate the microstructural evolution of the high temperature fl-Ti phase in a Ti-Cu binary alloy. While the reconstruction of martensitic microstructures was successful, the reconstruction of pearlitic microstructures was not effective. However, this analysis provided new insights into the interfacial crystallographic orientations of pearlitic Ti-Cu microstructures.

Summary: In this study, the advanced capabilities of electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) were used to investigate the role of dynamic recrystallization in the superplastic deformation of a fine-grained material. The results showed that dynamic recrystallization occurred only locally and had a minor contribution to microstructural evolution. Therefore, the preservation of the nearly-equiaxed grain morphology associated with superplasticity cannot be attributed to dynamic recrystallization.

Summary: The rapid collection and indexing of electron diffraction patterns via electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) has enabled crystallographic orientation and structural determination, as well as strain and dislocation density information. However, EBSD acquisition is sensitive to many factors and can result in low confidence index, poor image quality, and improper fit minimization, leading to noisy datasets and misrepresented microstructure. To address this, an image denoising autoencoder was implemented, resulting in improved pattern quality and accuracy of fit. The use of denoised datasets in HR-EBSD cross correlative strain analysis further reduced phantom strain and improved indexing accuracy.

Summary: The study proposes a refined simulation approach to accurately model various features observed in experimental Kikuchi diffraction patterns, particularly the excess-deficiency features seen in transmission Kikuchi diffraction. It is found that neglecting excess-deficiency effects in the theoretical model can impact the accuracy of projection center coordinates in electron backscatter diffraction and transmission Kikuchi diffraction by an order of magnitude around 10-3-10-2, affecting the absolute accuracy of simulation-based EBSD strain determination.

Summary: Measuring local chemistry of specific crystallographic features by atom probe tomography (APT) is aided by transmission Kikuchi diffraction (TKD), but the potential structural damage caused by TKD is often ignored. Two case studies demonstrate damage in APT specimens from TKD mapping. The damage includes planar segregation of solutes and the formation of voids containing high concentrations of a specific element.

Summary: The miniaturization trend of three-dimensional integrated circuits presents challenges to solder reliability. This study comprehensively explores the solder evolution under high current stressing, considering the anisotropic characteristics of beta-Sn. The results reveal that the anisotropy of beta-Sn aggravates the nonuniform distribution of current-induced stresses, leading to multiple migration modes in the solder bump. Additionally, electron-dislocation interaction promotes dislocation slip and lattice rotation, and current-induced grain merging via detwinning is observed. The study contributes to a better understanding of anisotropic evolution and damage mechanisms in micro solder bump design under current stressing.

Summary: The application of Electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) revealed that microstructural changes in a fine-grain Al-Mg-Li alloy during superplastic behavior were significantly influenced by continuous dynamic recrystallization. This mechanism involved the transverse subdivision of pre-elongated grains transforming into chains of nearly-equiaxed grains. Experimental observations, including significant strain hardening, grain elongation, and the development of crystallographic texture, provided strong evidence of intragranular slip operating during superplastic flow.

Summary: Electrogalvanization at room temperature using aqueous bath is widely used to protect steel in highly corrosive environments. However, low temperature galvanization at -2 degrees C produces Zn coating with significantly lower corrosion current density, leading to higher corrosion resistance compared to coatings deposited at higher temperatures. The texture of the coatings is highly sensitive to the deposition temperature, with coatings deposited at 2 degrees C showing the highest corrosion resistance due to specific grain orientation and grain boundary constitution.

Summary: Iron-based Fe-Mn-Al-Ni shape-memory alloys are cost-effective materials with remarkable pseudoelastic properties. The martensitic transformation of these alloys, studied through heat treatment and quenching, reveals a complex structure described by nanoscale twinned structure with tetragonal distortion. The lack of interstitial elements does not prevent the presence of these features.

Summary: In this study, near grain-oriented and near non-oriented Fe-3.5 wt.%Si silicon steel were fabricated using LPBF, and the effects of processing parameters on the texture evolution and magnetic properties of the silicon steel were investigated. The results showed that the morphology of the molten pool and the grain orientations can be controlled by adjusting the linear energy density, laser power, and scanning speed. This study provides valuable insights into the relationship between processing parameters, texture evolution, and magnetic properties in LPBFed silicon steel.

Summary: Ptychography provides high dose efficiency images that can reveal light elements next to heavy atoms. However, contrast reversals can occur when the projected potential becomes strong. Recent research has shown that these reversals can be counteracted by adapting the focus. This study explains why the best contrast is often found with the probe focused to the middle of the sample and highlights the importance of convergence angle in thin samples to remove contrast reversals.
