Summary: This Korean prospective cohort study found that decreasing waist circumference and lean muscle mass loss were significant risk factors for hip bone loss in both men and women. Other factors may have sex-specific or age-specific effects on hip bone loss. None of the genetic factors tested were associated with hip bone loss after multiple testing adjustments, indicating that modifiable factors may play a larger role in determining bone health.

Summary: This review investigates the risk factors of low bone mineral density (BMD) in children with idiopathic scoliosis (IS). The findings suggest that genetic, endocrine, and lifestyle-related factors may be associated with low BMD and osteoporosis in IS patients. Further research is needed to evaluate the effectiveness of screening for low BMD risk factors and develop intervention strategies for bone health.

Summary: Osteoporosis is a significant public health concern in Saudi Arabia, particularly among the aging population. This study examined the association between dietary calcium intake and osteoporosis risk in Saudi adults. Results showed that the overall mean calcium intake was very low and that certain dietary factors, such as tea intake and consumption of fish and eggs, were associated with a lower risk of osteoporosis.

Summary: This study aimed to identify risk factors for hip fractures in elderly Korean patients, especially in patients with osteoporosis. The retrospective analysis of 168 patients showed that lower body weight, BMI, and BMD Z-scores were associated with a higher incidence of intertrochanteric fractures compared to femoral neck fractures. This suggests that there is a correlation between low body weight, BMI, and BMD Z-scores and an increased risk of intertrochanteric fractures in elderly Korean patients.

Summary: This study found that medical comorbidity is associated with fracture risk and can increase the risk of fractures independently of FRAX. By using complex and simple measures of medical comorbidity, FRAX-based risk estimates can be modified to capture the increased fracture risk associated with multiple comorbid conditions in older patients.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the risk factors for decreased bone mineral density (BMD) in patients with schizophrenia and evaluate gender differences in BMD. The results showed that males had significantly lower BMD than females. Independent risks for low BMD included lower folate, glycosylated hemoglobin levels, higher age, serum ferritin, and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) levels. In female patients, BMD was mainly associated with age and serum hormones (FSH and testosterone), while in male patients, BMD was primarily related to age, microelements (serum ferritin and 25-OH-VD), and parathyroid hormone.

Summary: Lumbar spine trabecular bone score (TBS) is a bone mineral density (BMD)-independent risk factor for fracture, but its sensitivity to technical factors and oral antiresorptive therapies is limited. This study analyzed TBS changes over time and in response to osteoporosis treatment, and found that TBS is strongly affected by technical factors and has little effect on monitoring response to antiresorptive treatment. Therefore, the current version of the TBS algorithm has limited usefulness in untreated individuals or routine clinical practice.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the validity of the Physical Activity Scale for the Elderly (PASE) in stroke patients by comparing its scores with activity data derived from an accelerometer. The results showed that there was a significant moderate correlation between PASE scores and activity counts during moderate physical activity, energy expenditure during moderate activity, and total step count. However, no significant correlations were found between PASE scores and total activity counts, sedentary activity counts, light activity counts, or total energy expenditure. There was also a moderately positive correlation between PASE scores and Stroke Impact Scale scores, indicating convergent validity. The study concluded that there is uncertainty about the validity of PASE for reflecting total, light, and sedentary activity, and suggested the use of accelerometers for assessing physical activity in stroke patients.

Summary: This study investigated the association of trunk control and lower extremity selective motor control with sit-to-stand performance in children with CP. Results showed that children with CP had lower scores in all evaluations compared to typically developing children. There were moderate to fair correlations between trunk control, lower extremity selective control, and STS performance in the CP group, suggesting that improving these factors may enhance STS performance in children with CP.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the cross-sectional area of the rectus femoris muscle in amputated-limb compared to intact-limb and controls, and its correlation with functional strength and walking tests in prosthesis users. The results showed that the cross-sectional area of the rectus femoris was reduced in the amputated-limb, and the difference in muscle area between limbs was correlated with functional knee extension strength, step length, and walking speed in prosthesis users. Ultrasonographic measurement of the rectus femoris cross-sectional area is a valid and reliable tool for assessing functional strength and walking in prosthesis users with unilateral transtibial amputation.
