Objective: This study was planned as a community-based research study to estimate the prevalence of osteoporosis and explore related risk factors in the Thrace region of Turkey. Material and Methods: The community-based study involved a total of 620 people, 498 women and 122 men, aged between 40 and 89 years. A questionnaire on the medical history and lifestyles of the participants was applied with a face-to-face interview. Body weight height, and arm span of each participant were measured, together with bone mineral density at the middle phalanges of the second, third, and fourth digits of the non-dominant hand using dual-energy X-ray laser absorptiometry. Results: Age, clothing, lack of regular exercise, and giving birth to more than two children seem to contribute to osteoporosis, while high education, high economic level, tea and moderate alcohol consumption, oral contraceptive use, and hormone replacement therapy seem to retard osteoporosis. Osteoporotic patients had more fractures in the past. Height and weight were significantly lower in osteoporotic women. Conclusion: Lifestyle affects the prevalence of osteoporosis. Drinking tea and alcohol seems to be controversial with regard to osteoporosis risk.

COMPARATIVE VALIDITY OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY SCALE FOR ELDERLY WITH AN ACCELEROMETER IN PATIENTS WITH STROKE

Esra Giray, Evrim Karadag-Saygi, Nurullah Eren, Hizir Kurtel, Osman Hakan Gunduz

Summary: This study aimed to assess the validity of the Physical Activity Scale for the Elderly (PASE) in stroke patients by comparing its scores with activity data derived from an accelerometer. The results showed that there was a significant moderate correlation between PASE scores and activity counts during moderate physical activity, energy expenditure during moderate activity, and total step count. However, no significant correlations were found between PASE scores and total activity counts, sedentary activity counts, light activity counts, or total energy expenditure. There was also a moderately positive correlation between PASE scores and Stroke Impact Scale scores, indicating convergent validity. The study concluded that there is uncertainty about the validity of PASE for reflecting total, light, and sedentary activity, and suggested the use of accelerometers for assessing physical activity in stroke patients.

Characteristics of sit-to-stand movement are associated with trunk and lower extremity selective control in children with cerebral palsy: a cross-sectional study

Dilara Gunes, Evrim Karadag-Saygi, Esra Giray, Sefa Kurt

Summary: This study investigated the association of trunk control and lower extremity selective motor control with sit-to-stand performance in children with CP. Results showed that children with CP had lower scores in all evaluations compared to typically developing children. There were moderate to fair correlations between trunk control, lower extremity selective control, and STS performance in the CP group, suggesting that improving these factors may enhance STS performance in children with CP.

Assessment of the relationship between rectus femoris cross-sectional area and knee extension strength in the prosthesis users with transtibial amputation: A case-control study

Kardelen Gencer Atalay, Ozge Kenis Coskun, Esra Giray, Osman Hakan Gunduz, Ilker Yagci

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the cross-sectional area of the rectus femoris muscle in amputated-limb compared to intact-limb and controls, and its correlation with functional strength and walking tests in prosthesis users. The results showed that the cross-sectional area of the rectus femoris was reduced in the amputated-limb, and the difference in muscle area between limbs was correlated with functional knee extension strength, step length, and walking speed in prosthesis users. Ultrasonographic measurement of the rectus femoris cross-sectional area is a valid and reliable tool for assessing functional strength and walking in prosthesis users with unilateral transtibial amputation.
