Five Japanese eels (Anguilla japonica) were examined by immunolabeling with proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) and bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) incorporation for assessment of proliferative activities in various tissues of Japanese eels. PCNA protein was expressed in all tissues of eels, mainly in the haematopoietic tissues, especially in the anterior kidneys, an indication for the role of PCNA in haematopoiesis. Also, positive PCNA immunolabeling was frequently seen in the spleen. PCNA labeling index in kidney and spleen of Japanese eels was correlated well with BrdU incorporation which could be indicating higher proliferative activity of these organs. Absence of correlation between PCNA and BrdU in the testes may might refer to the expression of PCNA in germ and other somatic cells, while BrdU immunostaining was only noticed in S-phase dividing spermatogenic cells. Therefore, our results demonstrated over expression of PCNA in haematopoietic tissues and testes suggest the role of PCNA in haematopoiesis and spermatogenesis in Japanese eels. Moreover, PCNA and BrdU labeling indices could be a valuable approach for analyzing cell proliferation activity in the kidney and spleen of eel tissues.

Acute and Delayed Doxorubicin-Induced Myocardiotoxicity Associated with Elevation of Cardiac Biomarkers, Depletion of Cellular Antioxidant Enzymes, and Several Histopathological and Ultrastructural Changes

Alaa Abdelatty, Mohamed S. Ahmed, Mona A. Abdel-Kareem, Mohamed Dmerdash, Rehab Mady, Ahmed S. Saad, Ashraf Albrakati, Ehab Kotb Elmahallawy, Ahmed Elsawak, Walied Abdo

Summary: The study investigated the cardiotoxic effects of Doxorubicin in rats at different post-treatment periods, revealing acute and chronic toxic effects such as myocarditis, mitochondrial damage, myocyte degeneration, and fibrosis. This suggests a need for further research to understand the dose-dependent mechanisms and resulting cardiomyopathy of Doxorubicin toxicity.

Flunixin Meglumine Enhanced Bone Fracture Healing in Rabbits Associated with Activation of Early Collagen Deposition and Enhancement of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor Expression

Mohamed Elgendy, Gamal Elsayad, Magdi Seleim, Walied Abdo, Roua S. Baty, Ehab Kotb Elmahallawy, Ayman Atiba

Summary: Postfracture treatment with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) may delay healing, whereas this study found that flunixin meglumine (FM) enhanced bone fracture healing in rabbits by promoting early collagen deposition, angiogenesis, and vascular endothelial growth factor expression. In contrast, ketoprofen was found to delay bone fracture healing. This study suggests that FM may have beneficial effects on bone fracture healing, providing new insights into potential treatment options.

Summary: Avian coccidiosis is a major parasitic disease in the poultry industry, and its treatment mainly relies on the use of anticoccidial drugs. However, a new study has found that S-Methylcysteine (SMC), a compound derived from garlic, shows promising activity in treating avian coccidiosis. SMC exhibits potent anticoccidial effects, as well as antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

Mohamed Kh. ElMahdy, Samar A. Antar, Ehab Kotb Elmahallawy, Walied Abdo, Hayfa Hussin Ali Hijazy, Ashraf Albrakati, Ahmed E. Khodir

Summary: The present study investigates the potential anti-inflammatory effect of Dapagliflozin (DAPA) in ulcerative colitis (UC). DAPA treatment significantly reduces inflammation markers and restores oxidants/antioxidants hemostasis. It also has antioxidant and anti-apoptotic properties, preserving colon function and improving the histopathological architecture of tissues.

Genistin modulates high-mobility group box protein 1 (HMGB1) and nuclear factor kappa-B (NF-κB) in Ehrlich-ascites-carcinoma-bearing mice

Mohamed A. Saleh, Samar A. Antar, Walied Abdo, Ahmed Ashour, Ahmed A. Zaki

Summary: Cancer is the second leading cause of death worldwide, and current treatment options are often uncomfortable and ineffective. Plant-derived natural chemicals, such as flavonoids, have gained attention due to their high bioavailability, safety, few side effects, and cost-effectiveness. Flavonoids have shown promising cytotoxic anti-cancer effects and are being researched for their ability to target inflammation and apoptosis. In a laboratory study, genistin, a flavonoid compound, demonstrated good cytotoxic activity against breast cancer cell lines. In vivo studies on animals also showed that genistin reduced tumor weight, volume, and certain biochemical markers associated with cancer progression.
