Objective Aflatoxin is known to cross the placental barrier and exposures in utero could influence genomic programming, foetal growth and development, resulting in long-term health effects. We aimed to determine aflatoxin exposure in Gambian women at two stages of pregnancy and during the rainy and dry seasons. Methods We examined aflatoxin exposure in pregnant Gambian women at early (<16weeks) and later (16weeks onward) stages of pregnancy and at different times of the year, during the rainy (June to October 2009) or dry (November to May 2010) season, using aflatoxin-albumin adducts (AF-alb). Results Mean AF-alb was higher during the dry season than in the rainy season, in both early and later pregnancy although the difference was strongest in later pregnancy. There was a modest increase in AF-alb in later than early pregnancy (geometric mean 41.8 vs. 34.5pg/mg, P<0.05), but this was restricted to the dry season when exposures were generally higher. Conclusions The study confirmed that Gambian pregnant women were exposed to aflatoxin throughout the pregnancy, with higher levels in the dry season. There was some evidence in the dry season that women in later pregnancy had higher AF-alb levels than those in earlier pregnancy. Further research on the effects of exposure to this potent mutagen and carcinogen throughout pregnancy, including the epigenetic modification of foetal gene expression and impact on pre- and post-natal growth and development, are merited.

Seasonal modulation of antibody response to diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis vaccination in infants: a cohort study in rural Gambia

Summary: The study found that infant antibody response to the DTP vaccine in rural Gambia is influenced by season, with infants vaccinated during the rainy/hungry season showing higher antibody titres. However, the effects diminish after three doses of the vaccine. Environmental exposures, including nutrition, are hypothesized as likely drivers of these seasonal effects.

Summary: Human milk oligosaccharides (HMO), the third most abundant component of human milk, are believed to be crucial for infant health. This study conducted genome-wide association analyses on 395 women from 8 countries to identify genetic regions associated with different types of HMO, and found FUT2 to be the most significantly associated gene. Additionally, evidence of balancing selection for FUT2 was observed.

Summary: This study analyzed data from rural Gambia to investigate the associations between season of conception (SoC) and DNA methylation. The researchers identified 259 CpG sites that showed consistent associations with SoC and DNA methylation. These associations were most apparent in early infancy and attenuated by mid-childhood. The study also found that the SoC-associated CpG sites were influenced by environmental factors and were enriched for certain genomic regions and epigenetic mechanisms.

Summary: This study evaluated the effectiveness of high and low-dose calcium supplementation for pre-eclampsia prevention. The results showed that both high and low-dose calcium supplementation can effectively prevent pre-eclampsia. The effectiveness of calcium was not influenced by baseline pre-eclampsia risk, vitamin D co-administration, or timing of calcium initiation, but it was ineffective among women with adequate calcium intake.

An integrated 3D cell-based electrochemical biosensor for neurotoxicity assessment of organophosphorus pesticides

Summary: This study presents an integrated 3D cell-based electrochemical biosensor to evaluate the neurotoxicity of organophosphorus pesticides (OPs). The sensor uses OPs to inhibit the activity of intracellular acetylcholinesterase (AChE), resulting in a decline in enzymatic hydrolysate 1-naphthol (1-N). The fluctuation of the 1-N electrochemical response is proven to be a reliable indicator for assessing OPs neurotoxicity. Gelatin methacrylate hydrogel is used as a scaffold for 3D culture of PC12 cells, while zeolite imidazolate framework67@CoAl layered double hydroxides/multi-walled carbon nanotube composites enhance the sensitivity of the screen-printed carbon electrode.

Maternal nutritional risk factors for pre-eclampsia incidence: findings from a narrative scoping review

Mai-Lei Woo Kinshella, Shazmeen Omar, Kerri Scherbinsky, Marianne Vidler, Laura A. Magee, Peter von Dadelszen, Sophie E. Moore, Rajavel Elango

Summary: This scoping review examines the relationship between maternal nutritional deficiencies and imbalances and the incidence of pre-eclampsia. The review found evidence linking nutritional inadequacies to a higher risk of pre-eclampsia, mediated through oxidative stress, inflammation, maternal endothelial dysfunction, and blood pressure. Maternal dietary risk factors with strong consistency, effect, and biological plausibility for pre-eclampsia incidence include vitamin C, vitamin D, and healthy dietary patterns featuring high consumption of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, fish, seafood, and monounsaturated vegetable oils. Foods high in added sugar are associated with an increased risk. Further research is recommended to explore potential interactions and the social and cultural contexts of food and meals.

A review of micronutrient deficiencies and analysis of maize contribution to nutrient requirements of women and children in Eastern and Southern Africa

Y. J. H. Galani, C. Orfila, Y. Y. Gong

Summary: This paper reviews the importance of maize as staple food in Eastern and Southern Africa and its connection to micronutrient deficiencies in these regions. Micronutrient deficiencies, particularly among women and children, are prevalent in these regions. Maize consumption in these regions is also high. While maize can contribute to meeting dietary reference intakes, it lacks certain nutrients such as fats, calcium, and zinc. Successful strategies to address micronutrient deficiencies in these regions include maize fortification, increasing dietary diversity, and biofortification.

Summary: The study suggests that low birthweight and stunting in infancy may result from adverse early life environments triggering epigenetic reprogramming. Differential DNA methylation patterns were observed in rural Gambian infants with low and high birthweight, as well as in those showing rapid or slow postnatal length gain, indicating potential impacts on growth and long-term health outcomes.
