Summary: The coronavirus outbreak has posed significant challenges for water utilities, with changes in water consumption leading to higher operating costs and lower revenues. The drop in water sales was particularly notable in the group of other customers. It is expected that water sales volume will recover to pre-pandemic levels around 2025.

Summary: This study examines the economic impact of COVID-19 on different industries in eastern China, finding that emergency response measures affected all industries, with stricter control leading to a greater decrease in electricity consumption and production. The pandemic outbreak has a negative-lag effect on industries, and there is greater resilience in industries that are less dependent on human mobility for economic production and activities.

Summary: This study assesses the economic cost and energy transition effects of different policy scenarios based on an improved dynamic computable general equilibrium (CGE) model. The results show that energy structure optimization and integrated policy scenarios could achieve the carbon neutrality target, and carbon sink is another critical factor that can offset the remaining emissions. The study also highlights the varying impacts on GDP losses, energy consumption, and air pollutant reduction potential under different scenarios.

Summary: China's rapid industrialization since the 21st century has caused significant mineral resource consumption, resulting in water scarcity and pollution. This study assesses the transfer of embodied water pollution in China's mining industry and the economic losses through a multiregional input-output model and cost analysis methods. The findings reveal environmental inequalities across the country, with Beijing-Tianjin area and eastern coastal regions being responsible for water pollution spillover and cost passing to other regions. The research highlights the importance of understanding embodied water pollution transfer in mineral trade for national water environment governance planning, with practical implications for water resource redistribution, ecological compensation, and regional economic development coordination.

Summary: This study aimed to quantify the direct economic losses caused by respiratory and gastrointestinal helminth infections in domestic pigs in Uganda. Longitudinal farm visits were conducted from October 2018 to September 2019, and samples were taken from 94 farms. The pigs were monitored for growth and screened for exposure to respiratory pathogens. The study found that improving management practices could reduce economic losses.

Summary: This study provides a scientific evaluation of grain supply and consumption in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK). The results reveal that DPRK's grain production in 2019 was at the same level as in 1975, and the country has been unable to meet the demand since 1995. It is crucial for the DPRK to increase the use of chemical and organic fertilizers to ensure soil fertility. Additionally, implementing multi-cropping farming systems in the southern region can significantly increase grain production and guarantee food supply for millions of people.

Summary: This study aimed to understand the experiences of young people returning to physical leisure activities after severe acquired brain injury (ABI). Through semi-structured interviews with seven participants, three main themes were identified: changes in identity, motivations for participating in activities, and the need for support. The study found that returning to physical leisure activities was important for young people, but it presented practical and emotional challenges due to changes in abilities. Therefore, services need a multidisciplinary approach to support young people psychologically and practically in order to enable meaningful participation in enjoyable activities.

Summary: This study monitored the presence of SARS-CoV-2 in nasopharyngeal samples from young children aged 6-30 months attending day-care centres in Belgium from May 2020 to February 2022. The results showed that SARS-CoV-2 carriage among DCC children was detected only after the emergence of Delta and Omicron variants, with 9 out of the 42 screened DCCs being affected. Limited transmission of SARS-CoV-2 was observed among young children in Belgian DCCs during the studied period, as only one DCC had two children testing positive for SARS-CoV-2 at the same sampling time point.

Summary: This study assessed the seroprevalence and seroincidence of SARS-CoV-2 in Belgium during the first national lockdown. The findings indicate that a small but increasing fraction of the population showed serological signs of exposure to the virus during the lockdown, but this did not further increase after the lockdown was lifted.

Summary: The basic reproduction number (R-0) is a crucial indicator for describing the potential of infectious diseases to cause epidemics. Ignoring important sources of heterogeneity related to transmission and control may result in biased estimates when calculating R-0 using simple models. Predictions of the impact of interventions may be relatively pessimistic if heterogeneity is ignored. However, if interventions are suspended, the potential for a consecutive epidemic wave depends strongly on assumptions about heterogeneity.

Summary: This study presents a framework for improving estimation of the spatial distribution of COVID-19 incidence in Belgium using a joint spatial modeling approach. The results show that an online survey can provide valuable auxiliary data to optimize the estimation based on confirmed cases. Additionally, the survey is capable of identifying locations with similar clusters of cases approximately 1 week earlier.

Summary: Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a major cause of infant mortality and morbidity in older adults. Efforts are being made to develop RSV vaccines and immunoprophylaxis using various approaches, with 33 candidates currently in clinical development. Understanding antibody targets has led to more rational and structure-based vaccine design. An extended half-life monoclonal antibody for infants is expected to receive regulatory approval within a year. Other approaches include live-attenuated vaccines for older infants, subunit vaccines for pregnant women, and vector and nucleic acid vaccines for older adults. Ensuring access and affordability of RSV vaccines globally is a priority.

Summary: To combat the initial spread of SARS-CoV-2, many countries implemented nationwide non-pharmaceutical intervention measures, leading to significant socio-economic impacts. However, subnational approaches could potentially achieve similar epidemiological control while minimizing societal consequences. In this study, a high-resolution analysis framework was developed using demographic and spatial data to demonstrate how a subnational approach in the Netherlands resulted in comparable hospital admissions control with the advantage of keeping some regions open for a longer period. This framework can be applicable to other countries and aid in developing policies for future epidemics.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the burden of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) on children under 5 years old. The findings showed that infants under 6 months old, especially in low-income and middle-income countries, are at higher risk of infection, hospitalization, and death. Therefore, the study suggests implementing multiple measures to reduce the burden on this population.
