Summary: Hexahydrocurcumin-encapsulated chitosan nanoparticles (HHC-CS-NPs) were formulated and optimized using emulsification and gelation techniques. The optimized HHC-CS-NPs exhibited a spherical shape, narrow size distribution, and molecular dispersion of the drugs. They showed sustained release, stability under various conditions, and significantly improved biological activities compared to the HHC solution. In vitro studies demonstrated enhanced antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and cytotoxic effects, as well as up-regulation of apoptotic protein expression. These findings suggest that the optimized HHC-CS-NPs have potential as an efficient oral treatment for breast cancer.

Summary: Shellfish and crustaceans use calcium carbonate (CaCO3) as a protective shell and exoskeleton. In this study, the interaction between the low-complexity region and CaCO3 was analyzed to elucidate the microstructure formation mechanism. The results showed that the Pif 80 acidic region binds the aragonite crystal surface via Asp side chains with basic residues, providing new insights into the function of acidic and basic amino acids in biomineral formation.

Summary: This study systematically analyzes the dynamic flow fouling of calcium carbonate and calcium sulfate on smooth, superhydrophobic, and liquid-infused surfaces. The fouling characteristics are examined through microstructural analysis and quantified using fouling resistance and threshold time. The study presents closed-form analytical relationships for fouling resistance and threshold time based on the Reynolds number, fouling agent concentration, and infused liquid viscosity. The results accurately predict the fouling characteristics and provide contour maps for optimal surface designs to minimize fouling resistance.

Summary: The study developed magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) as targeted drug delivery and non-invasive MRI contrast agents in ovarian cancer cells, showing synergistic therapeutic effects. The size, morphology, functional groups, and magnetic properties of the nanoparticles were characterized. The cellular uptake of the nanoparticles with MUC16 overexpression and the signal intensity changes in tumor sites were evaluated using MR images and flow cytometry. The findings suggest the potential of the nanoparticles as an image-guided co-drug delivery system for ovarian cancer.

Summary: NF-kappa B is a critical regulator of the immune response, inflammation, cell growth, and survival, but its dysregulation is associated with inflammation-related diseases and cancers. Inhibiting the NF-kappa B pathway could be a promising target for cancer therapy. Nanocarrier systems can improve treatment effectiveness and reduce off-target toxicity.

Summary: The study assessed the release pattern, antimicrobial action, and flexural strength of self-cured acrylic resins with added curcumin nanoparticles. The results showed a two-step release pattern for the nanocurcumin and an increase in antimicrobial activity against Streptococcus mutans. However, the flexural strength decreased with increasing weight percentage of curcumin nanoparticles. Despite this decrease, all strength values were higher than the standard. The study suggests that using self-cured resins containing curcumin nanoparticles can be beneficial for antimicrobial purposes in orthodontic removable applications.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate a novel gelatin-based biodegradable sponge's abilities in controlling bleeding, pain, and dry socket after mandibular posterior teeth extraction compared to a commercial sponge. In a randomized, double-blind, split-mouth clinical trial, 26 patients underwent tooth extraction with the test group using the prepared gelatin sponge and the control group using the commercial sponge. Results showed that the test group had better bleeding control, reduced bleeding within 1 hour, 1-4 hours, and after 4 hours post-operatively, decreased pain over time, and a lower occurrence of dry socket compared to the control group.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the stability of gelatin-curcumin nanocomposite coating on healing abutments. The nanocomposite showed a relatively rapid release pattern of curcumin in the first 10 days, followed by a slow release until the 30th day. The weight changes of the coated healing abutments were statistically significant during this time. The results indicated successful coating with gelatin-curcumin nanocomposite and the consistency of the coating lasted for at least one month. Further evaluations in different aspects are necessary.

Summary: Stroke is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, but effective treatment options are lacking. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) have been identified as a major factor in brain injury after ischemic stroke. Antioxidant therapy appears to be effective in managing oxidative stress related to inflammatory disorders like stroke, but traditional antioxidants are limited in their distribution and localization in the body. However, recent breakthroughs in the use of antioxidant nanoparticles (NPs) have shown promise in stroke treatment by efficiently delivering antioxidants to the damaged areas of the brain.
