Summary: The nematodes Aelurostrongylus abstrusus, Troglostrongylus brevior, and Capillaria aerophila are gaining increasing attention as primary causes of respiratory diseases in cats. Recent studies have focused on enhancing knowledge, providing insights, and addressing gaps in understanding respiratory parasitoses in felines. Awareness of clinical scenarios, timely diagnosis, and effective treatment options are key priorities, while efforts to evaluate chemopreventative approaches are being made to curb the spread of these parasites and the rise in clinical cases worldwide.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the association between A. abstrusus infection and pulmonary hypertension (PH) and to evaluate the correlation between the number of expelled larvae and clinical, echocardiographic, and radiological alterations. The results showed that most cats exhibited pathological patterns on thoracic radiograms, but no significant echocardiographic findings of PH were detected. The number of expelled larvae was not correlated with the severity of clinical signs, but significant correlations were observed with activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT), radiographic alterations, and ultrasonographic findings (RIVIDs).

Summary: This study assessed the cardio-pulmonary parasite infection status in European wildcats in Germany and found that these parasites are common but do not appear to significantly impact the overall health of the population. However, due to potential transmission through prey, these parasites may circulate between the wildcat population and domestic cats, posing a health risk to individual domestic cats.

Summary: Pulmonary parasitic diseases, caused by Aelurostrongylus abstrusus, Troglostrongylus brevior, and Capillaria aerophila, have become common in cats. Affected cats may exhibit respiratory and non-specific symptoms. Diagnosis can be done through copromicroscopic, serological, and molecular detection, while treatment should be symptomatic and elective.

Summary: A study conducted in Germany found that most cats infected with the metastrongylid nematode Aelurostrongylus abstrusus do not show symptoms, and the infection rate is underestimated. All cats with outdoor access are at risk of infection, highlighting the importance of raising awareness and increasing infection detection rates for this disease.

Summary: This article describes two cases of notoedric mange concurrent with aelurostrongylidosis in two domestic-owned cats from a rural environment in Romania. The cats were successfully treated with selamectin spot-on formulation and improving the quality of their lives was crucial for the success of the treatment.

Summary: The study assessed the immune system reaction of the land snail to Aelurostrongylus abstrusus. It was found that the snails showed no immune system reactions against the parasite in the early stage of infection, but they partially encapsulated the parasite in the later stage. This finding suggests that the snail's mucus may serve as an alternative route for the transmission of the feline lungworm.

Summary: Angiostrongylus vasorum, Crenosoma vulpis, Aelurostrongylus abstrusus, and Troglostrongylus brevior can cause severe cardiovascular and pulmonary symptoms in companion animals and wildlife. The spread of these nematodes within Europe and South America is increasing, and gastropod intermediate hosts may play a role.

Summary: This study confirmed the presence of neglected metastrongyloid nematodes Gurltia paralysans and Aelurostrongylus abstrusus in domestic cat populations in Southern Chile, and described potential risk factors associated with infections. Co-infection rates were observed, with G. paralysans being more prevalent in all three cities, while A. abstrusus infection levels varied among the studied populations.

Summary: This study investigated the occurrence of A. abstrusus in cats in Vilhena, Brazil, and found that 2 out of 101 cats tested positive for the infection. Research on this parasite in Brazil is limited.

Summary: The report describes the first clinically manifested and serologically proven case of Dirofilaria immitis infection in a cat in Bulgaria. The cat presented with anorexia, weight loss, intermittent coughing, and itching skin lesions on the head and neck. Despite treatment with selamectin, doxycycline and corticosteroids, the cat suddenly died several months later.

Summary: This study reports the presence of metastrongylid species, specifically Oslerus rostratus, in domestic cats from the island of Tenerife, Spain. The findings contribute to our understanding of the distribution and epidemiology of this lungworm species in wild and domestic cats from the Canary Islands.

Summary: This study presents a case of severe pulmonary parasitism caused by Aelurostrongylus abstrusus in a wild Oncilla (Leopardus tigrinus) from Colombia. The animal was admitted to a veterinary clinic but died shortly after. Necropsy and histopathology revealed lung lesions and the presence of metastrongyloid nematodes. This is the first report of A. abstrusus infection associated with pathological lesions in a L. tigrinus from Colombia.

Summary: In this study, it was found that individuals with central nervous system symptoms were more likely to have Bartonella spp. DNA in their bloodstream compared to healthy volunteers. However, there was no significant difference in the severity of schizophrenia/schizoaffective disorder symptoms between individuals with and without evidence of Bartonella spp. infection.
