Summary: Statin-associated muscle symptoms (SAMS) are common in patients using statin drugs, but not all symptoms are caused by the drugs, negative expectations could also play a role. Physical activity is important for managing cardiovascular disease risk, but the evidence of increased creatine-kinase levels in statin-treated athletes has been wrongly generalized. The potential of reducing sedentary behavior and resistance training has been overlooked in current guidelines.

Summary: This study evaluated the muscular toxicity of the combination therapy of daptomycin and statins using a large pharmacovigilance database. The results showed that the combination of daptomycin with rosuvastatin, atorvastatin, and simvastatin increased the reporting frequency of myopathy. Additionally, the combination of daptomycin with these statins also increased the frequency of rhabdomyolysis.

Summary: Statin inhibitors are a common treatment for hyperlipidemic cardiovascular diseases, but they may cause adverse effects. Little attention has been given to interactions between herbal medicines and statins. Flavonoids, a type of phytochemical, may increase the risk of statin-induced myopathy. This review aims to discuss the interactions between high dose flavonoids and hepatic CYP450 metabolism, OATP uptake, and HMG-CoA reductase.

Summary: This study investigated the association between statin use and gout risk in patients with hyperlipidemia. It was found that regular statin use was associated with a non-significant reduction in gout risk compared to irregular statin use and other lipid-lowering agent use. However, a protective effect was observed for higher cumulative doses and longer therapy durations.

Summary: Hyperlipidemia affects bone metabolism and inhibits osseointegration of dental implants. This review summarizes the effects of hyperlipidemia on dental implants and addresses potential strategies to improve osseointegration in a hyperlipidemic environment. Topical drug delivery methods, including local drug injection, implant surface modification, and bone-grafting material modification, are discussed.

Summary: Hyper- and dyslipidemia significantly contribute to cardiovascular diseases and mortality in diabetic individuals. Extensive evidence supports the usage of lipid-lowering drugs to reduce cardiovascular risk in diabetic patients. This article outlines the recommendations of the Austrian Diabetes Association regarding the use of lipid-lowering drugs based on current scientific evidence.

Summary: The study found that regular users of nonstatin lipid-lowering medicines had a higher risk of rehospitalization due to ischemic stroke compared to statin users. Among hyperlipidemic patients, rosuvastatin was the most preferred lipid-lowering medicine with lower risks of rehospitalization due to ischemic stroke.

Summary: This retrospective study aimed to investigate the association between adherence to statins and the risk of dementia among patients with diabetes and comorbid hyperlipidemia. The results found that good adherence to statins was not significantly associated with a reduced risk of dementia in this patient population. Further research with a more diverse study population is needed to evaluate the neuroprotective effects of statins on dementia prevention.

Summary: This case study presents a 61-year-old male with rhabdomyolysis attributed to the recent initiation of statin therapy. Despite aggressive fluid resuscitation, the patient showed persistent myalgias and progressive weakness. After ruling out other causes, the diagnosis of statin-induced necrotizing autoimmune myopathy was made based on muscle biopsy findings. The patient improved with immunosuppressive therapy.

Summary: This case report highlights a rare occurrence of deep venous thrombosis (DVT) in a patient with anti-SRP myopathy who was successfully treated with catheter-directed thrombolysis (CDT) and systemic anticoagulants therapy. The combination of CDT and systemic anticoagulation therapy may be an effective therapeutic approach for extensive DVT in patients with anti-SRP myopathy, where established treatment strategies are lacking for the concurrent management of autoimmune myopathy and DVT.

Summary: Recent data suggest that larger resection volumes in oncoplastic surgery, such as OBCII, may improve local control and reduce reexcision rates significantly compared to conventional breast conserving surgery (BCS) or oncoplastic breast conservation with lower resection volumes (OBCI). Despite differences in tumor size and resection margins, there were no differences in local, regional, or distant recurrence-free or overall survival between patients treated with OBCII and those treated with BCS/OBCI.

Summary: Optimizing COVID-19 vaccination strategies for immunosuppressed patients is crucial. In this clinical trial, a homologous mRNA booster vaccine showed higher seroconversion rate compared to a switch to a vector-based vaccine for non-seroconverted immunosuppressed patients. The study highlights the importance of booster vaccination and supports the use of homologous mRNA booster vaccine in this vulnerable group.

Summary: Using genome-wide microarray measurements, a molecular classification of parenchymal injury in heart transplants was developed. T cell-mediated rejection and antibody-mediated rejection have differential impacts on the parenchyma, with the latter contributing significantly to late dysfunction. This classification provides new insights into dysfunction and outcomes in heart transplants.
