Summary: Primary sclerosing cholangitis is a significant cause of liver transplantation. Hepatic alveolar echinococcosis, caused by Echinococcus multilocularis, can be detected by ultrasound or CT scan of the liver showing characteristic calcified conglomerates. Symptoms of alveolar echinococcosis occur after a long period of infection, accompanied by cholestasis or cholangitis. This report presents a case of presumed autoimmune hepatitis and primary sclerosing cholangitis in a patient, and post-transplantation diagnosis revealed alveolar echinococcosis in the explanted liver.

Summary: In this study, PLGA nanoparticles encapsulating a novel anti-AE agent (H1402) were prepared for liver-targeted therapy of hepatic AE. The H1402-loaded nanoparticles showed efficient encapsulation, rapid penetration into the cyst wall, and extensive accumulation in the pre-cysts of E. multilocularis. The treatment with H1402-NPs resulted in significantly reduced parasitic burden compared to albendazole and untreated infected mice.

Summary: Liver parasites can lead to significant global morbidity, especially in Europe where their incidence is increasing due to climate change and globalisation. The correct diagnosis of hepatic parasites is often delayed because clinicians are unfamiliar with them, highlighting the importance of bringing attention to these neglected parasitic liver diseases.

Summary: A study conducted on 2872 foxes in Italy found a 7.55% prevalence of cestode eggs in fecal samples, with Echinococcus multilocularis, Taenia crassiceps, and Taenia polyacantha being the most common species. The study also revealed an increasing trend of E. multilocularis prevalence in recent years.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of immunosuppression-associated conditions (IACs) on the increase in new alveolar echinococcosis (AE) cases and the characteristics of AE at diagnosis and during clinical course. The findings suggest that IACs have little impact on the increase in new AE cases, as well as on the extent of the disease at diagnosis and clinical course.

Summary: Alveolar echinococcosis (AE) is a highly fatal and disabling parasitic infection with diverse clinical manifestations and difficulties in differential diagnosis. Metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) has become an attractive approach for the etiological diagnosis of infectious diseases. In this case, mNGS was used to diagnose disseminated AE, which can help improve clinicians' diagnostic skills.

Summary: Patients with intracranial alveolar echinococcosis (IAE) exhibit distinct clinical and radiological characteristics, with common neurological symptoms such as headache and liver involvement. Surgical treatment remains a major challenge, and poor compliance with albendazole is a concern in the treatment of IAE.

Summary: This study revealed significant differences in the behavior of hemangioma-like AE lesions and typical liver hemangiomas on CEUS. Early arterial bulbous ring enhancement and late-phase hyperenhancement were characteristic of hemangiomas, while hemangioma-like AE lesions showed typical early arterial rim enhancement followed by portal venous and late-phase non-enhancement. These findings highlight the importance of considering AE as a possible differential diagnosis in high-endemic areas.

Summary: The study reveals that M2 macrophages dominate in hepatic macrophages associated with E. multilocularis infection. Macrophages in the liver tend to polarize towards the M1 phenotype at the early stage of infection, then shift to the M2 phenotype.

Summary: In this study, the molecular characterization of human echinococcosis in the southern Punjab region of Pakistan was conducted. The majority of human infections were caused by E. granulosus s.s., followed by E. multilocularis and E. canadensis. Genotypic characterization among both human and livestock populations is needed to explore the genetic diversity of echinococcosis.

Summary: Tracheomalacia is a condition that is usually congenital in children but can also be acquired in rare cases in adults. Patients typically experience symptoms such as shortness of breath, chronic cough, and recurrent respiratory tract infections. Diagnosis is often incidentally made through thoracic imaging. This study presents a case of a 70-year-old female patient who developed tracheomalacia after tracheal intubation.

Summary: Perilymphatic fistula refers to the extravasation of perilymph fluid into the middle ear cavity. Cross-sectional imaging techniques play a crucial role in evaluating inner and middle ear structures and temporal bone. Thin section CT scans can effectively show pneumolabyrinth and temporal bone fractures, while high-resolution 3D volumetric MRI sequences can help demonstrate posttraumatic ear effusion and cerebrospinal fluid fistula in the inner or middle ear.

Summary: Nasopharyngeal stenosis is a rare condition that often develops as a result of nasopharyngeal or oropharyngeal surgery and radiotherapy. It can lead to obstructive symptoms and is usually diagnosed using nasopharyngoscopy. Treatment is challenging and involves various surgical techniques, such as balloon dilation. Even after successful surgery, recurrence is very common.
