Is being barefoot, wearing shoes and physical activity associated with knee osteoarthritis pain flares? Data from a usually barefoot Sri Lankan cohort

Inoshi Atukorala, Arunasalam Pathmeswaran, Nishamani Batuwita, Nimesha Rajapaksha, Vishmi Ratnasiri, Lalith Wijayaratne, Monika De Silva, Thashi Chang, Yuqing Zhang, David John Hunter

Onchocerciasis control in Ghana (1974-2016)

Nana-Kwadwo Biritwum, Dziedzom K. de Souza, Odame Asiedu, Benjamin Marfo, Uche Veronica Amazigo, John Owusu Gyapong

Summary: The control of onchocerciasis in Ghana has been successful, with a significant decrease in infection prevalence and microfilaria load. However, there are still communities with microfilaria prevalence above 1%. Guidance and financial support are needed to ensure the elimination goal is met as the focus shifts from control to elimination.

Physical Activity Tracking Among Sri Lankan Adults: Findings From a 7-Year Follow-up of the Ragama Health Study

Janani Pinidiyapathirage, Anuradhani Kasthuriratne, Jason A. Bennie, Arunasalam Pathmeswaran, Stuart J. H. Biddle, Hithanadura Janaka De Silva, Sureka Chackrewarthy, Anuradha S. Dassanayake, Udaya Ranawaka, Norihiro Kato, Ananda Rajitha Wickremasinghe

Summary: Limited data are available on physical activity tracking among adults in low- and middle-income countries, prompting a longitudinal study in Sri Lanka to assess trends and correlates of physical activity. Findings show that 40% of participants maintained recommended physical activity levels over time, with one-fifth increasing activity. Factors associated with persistent activity include male sex, lower education and income, absence of chronic diseases, good self-rated health, and sitting time <8 hours. Public health interventions are needed to support maintenance of physical activity levels, especially for high-risk subgroups.

The clinical utility of accurate NAFLD ultrasound grading: Results from a community-based, prospective cohort study

Madunil Anuk Niriella, Dileepa Senajith Ediriweera, Anuradhani Kasturiratne, Deepa Gunasekara, Shamila Thivanshi De Silva, Anuradha Supun Dassanayaka, Arjuna Priyadarshin De Silva, Norihiro Kato, Arunasalam Pathmeswaran, Ananda Rajitha Wickramasinghe, Hithanadura Janaka de Silva

Summary: This study found that moderate-severe NAFLD had a higher likelihood of developing new metabolic traits and cardiovascular events compared to intermediate NAFLD. However, both moderate-severe and intermediate NAFLD were associated with higher prevalence of adverse anthropometric and metabolic traits, identifying individuals who may require medical intervention even among those with milder degrees of fatty liver.

Outcomes of NAFLD and MAFLD: Results from a community-based, prospective cohort study

Madunil Anuk Niriella, Dileepa Senajith Ediriweera, Anuradhani Kasturiratne, Shamila Thivanshi De Silva, Anuradha Supun Dassanayaka, Arjuna Priyadarshin De Silva, Norihiro Kato, Arunasalam Pathmeswaran, Ananda Rajitha Wickramasinghe, Hithanadura Janaka de Silva

Summary: This study compared the impact of NAFLD and MAFLD on health outcomes and found that the risks of new-onset metabolic traits and cardiovascular events were similar between the two during a 7-year follow-up. Individuals excluded by the NAFLD definition but captured by the MAFLD definition showed a higher risk of adverse outcomes compared to those excluded by the MAFLD definition but captured by the NAFLD definition.

Maternal postpartum deworming and infant milk intake: Secondary outcomes from a trial

Layla S. Mofid, Martin Casapia, Antonio Montresor, Elham Rahme, Grace S. Marquis, Jozef Vercruysse, Lindsay H. Allen, Brittany Blouin, Hugo Razuri, Lidsky Pezo, Theresa W. Gyorkos

Summary: The World Health Organization recommends deworming to reduce soil-transmitted helminth (STH)-attributable morbidity in women of reproductive age. A study in Peru assessed the impact of postpartum deworming on infant milk intake, but found no significant difference in milk intake between the albendazole and placebo groups at 1- and 6-month postpartum. Infants born to mothers with Trichuris trichiura infection had higher milk intakes, but infection intensity did not significantly affect milk intake.

Summary: Investment in SARS-CoV-2 sequencing in Africa has led to a significant increase in the number of sequences available for tracking the pandemic on the continent, surpassing 100,000 genomes. The study highlights the advantages of local sequencing in terms of faster turnaround times and routine surveillance. The findings underscore the heterogeneous nature of the pandemic and shed light on the dispersal dynamics of variants of concern in Africa.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the etiology of acute febrile illness by using a semi-quantitative PCR in a modular format to detect bloodborne pathogens. A case-control study will be conducted in Iquitos, Loreto, Peru, involving the collection of blood, saliva, and nasal swabs for testing. The results of this study will provide a more accurate understanding of the main pathogens causing acute febrile illness.

Theresa Gyorkos, Ruben Nicholls, Antonio Montresor, Ana Lucianez, Martin Casapia, Kariane St-Denis, Brittany Blouin, Serene Joseph

Summary: This manuscript presents the work of the PAHO/WHO Collaborating Centre for Research and Training in Parasite Epidemiology and Control, which aligns its activities with the Sustainable Development Goals and the WHO Road Map for Neglected Tropical Diseases 2021-2030. The centre contributes to global action on NTDs through policy development and knowledge translation. Three important projects have been recently completed, focusing on monitoring and evaluation framework, guideline development, and policy brief formulation. These projects involve multiple partners and aim to eliminate NTD-attributable morbidity by 2030.
