Summary: The study identified four different developmental pathways among adolescents: some adolescents start using e-cigarettes with a delay but quickly, some adolescents use e-cigarettes steadily from the beginning, some adolescents use both e-cigarettes and traditional cigarettes, and some adolescents do not use e-cigarettes or traditional cigarettes. The findings also revealed that adolescents who were dual users had a greater number and severity of e-cigarette and combustible cigarette risk factors.

Summary: This study monitored cigarette butts (CBs) in two Brazilian cities to assess contamination, Cigarette Butt Pollution Index (CBPI), and the size of the illegal market. The results showed that CB contamination was higher in one city compared to the other, and there was no relationship between CB occurrence/distribution and land usage or population density. The study also estimated the illegal cigarette consumption in both cities. The data can be valuable for implementing actions towards environmentally sustainable and socially resilient cities.

Summary: The study in Iran found that despite increases in cigarette prices, consumption was not reduced. Consumers may shift to buying single cigarettes or cheaper brands after price hikes. Increases in prices could also lead to stockpiling of cigarettes and increased smuggling of illicit ones to counterbalance the rising prices.

Summary: This study examines the validity of the Pollution Haven Hypothesis (PHH) and the relevance of globalization in Eastern European emerging countries, and aims to address the lack of consensus on the globalization-economic complexity-environment relation in European countries. It also explores the existence of an N-shaped Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) related to economic complexity, considering the impact of renewable energy on environmental degradation. The results show a non-linear relationship between economic complexity and carbon emissions, and confirm the presence of an N-shaped EKC. Globalization and renewable energy consumption have contrasting effects on emissions. Additionally, economic complexity moderates the carbon emissions-boosting effect of globalization. The findings provide insights for environmental development policies that promote economic complexity and renewable energy as key factors in mitigating carbon emissions.

Summary: A high proportion of youth from central and eastern European countries were susceptible to tobacco use. Social factors, educational and policy issues, as well as attitudes regarding tobacco use, were strongly associated with tobacco use susceptibility, consistently across countries. There were slight differences in susceptibility to tobacco use between countries, related to sex, money available for own expenses, exposure to advertisements at points of sale, and the belief that people who smoke have more friends.

Summary: In Central Eastern European countries, there was a period of interesting labor market dynamics after the global financial crisis, characterized by increased labor market resilience, higher minimum wage levels, and stricter employment protection legislation. This suggests a degree of complementarity between worker-friendly legislation and minimum wage policies.

Summary: There is a lack of actor-level data on large-scale commercial agriculture in Sub-Saharan Africa, making the choice of transnational investing in African land a subject of conjecture. This study used Bayesian networks to reconstruct the underlying logics of investment location choices, analyzing firm- and actor-level interview and spatial data from 37 transnational agriculture and forestry investments across four countries. The findings highlight the preferred locations of different investors and their reasons, taking into account their skillsets and market reach.

Summary: This narrative review examines the published scientific literature on e-cigarettes in South Africa and responds to reports commissioned by the e-cigarette industry about proposed regulations. The review finds that e-cigarette users in South Africa are more numerous than industry reports suggest. Contrary to industry claims, e-cigarettes are more expensive than regular cigarettes, and regulating them as tobacco products rather than medicines would benefit public health.

Summary: This research examines coordination instruments for multisectoral action at the national level in Uganda and explores how these tools are implemented. The study finds that the government of Uganda uses a range of structural and management instruments that influence each other and are mainly based on hierarchy and network mechanisms. These instruments generate resources and structure interorganizational relationships across vertical and horizontal boundaries. The study also highlights the need for a contextualized examination of coordination tools and suggests a multitheoretical framework for analysis.

Summary: There is consensus in global health that multisectoral action is needed to address various health and development challenges, yet limited progress has been made. The main obstacles include the coordination of policies among different departments such as health, trade, and treasury, as well as the lack of advancement. Research suggests the need for a multi-theory approach that considers various perspectives on coordination practices.
