Summary: Emulsion-assisted milling is used to produce spherical composite powders for various applications. This study focuses on correlating milling process parameters with the characteristics of the spherical powders produced. By varying the milling conditions, spherical powders were obtained and classified based on their shape and size. The quality of the powders was evaluated using a parameter called Q, which is maximized when a large fraction of spherical particles with a narrow size distribution is produced. A correlation was found between Q and a combined milling process parameter, and the conditions leading to the formation of high-quality spherical powders also resulted in material refinement.

Summary: This study systematically investigated the thermodynamics and phase evolution of calcium nitrate tetrahydrate. The pyrolysis process of calcium nitrate tetrahydrate can be divided into four stages. The activation energies of calcium nitrate pyrolysis were determined using three iso-conversion methods. The pyrolysis process of calcium nitrate further expands the industrial application of nitric acid pressure leaching.

Summary: The ability of microorganisms to develop resistance to antibiotics is outpacing the development of new and effective antibiotics. The use of green synthesized metallic and metal oxide nanoparticles as an alternative to antibiotics shows promise in targeting bacteria. In this study, silver nanoparticles, zinc oxide nanoparticles, copper oxide nanoparticles, and iron oxide nanoparticles were synthesized using a leaf extract. The nanoparticles showed enhanced antibacterial activity when combined with the antibiotic streptomycin, suggesting synergism between nanoparticles and antibiotics. The most enhanced antibacterial potential was observed when streptomycin was conjugated with zinc oxide nanoparticles.

Summary: Autosomal recessive non-syndromic hearing loss (ARNSHL) is a common hereditary deafness with high genetic heterogeneity. The molecular basis of ARNSHL is still unresolved in many cases, and techniques used to identify gene mutations vary. Various methods including homozygosity mapping, linkage studies, candidate gene approach, and position-independent approaches have been used to identify the gene mutations associated with ARNSHL.

Summary: Research was conducted on a magnetic photocatalyst, consisting of biochar and bismuth ferrite, for the degradation of ciprofloxacin antibiotics. The optimal conditions were found to be a photocatalyst dosage of 1.5 g/L and an initial pollutant concentration of 10 ppm, resulting in a photodegradation efficiency of 77.08% after 2 hours of direct sunlight exposure.

Summary: This study mainly focuses on the synthesis of two allotropes of graphene, graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO), and their characterization. The synthesized nanocomposites, Sm2O3/GO and Sm2O3/rGO, were characterized using FTIR, XRD, TGA, and UV-Visible spectroscopy. The results showed characteristic FTIR peaks and specific crystallite shapes, as well as narrow optical band gaps for the nanocomposites. Additionally, the nanocomposites exhibited photocatalytic efficiency in the degradation of methylene blue and antimicrobial activities against bacterial strains.

Summary: This is a case report about prostate cancer, in which a 60-year-old male patient presented with abdominal pain and was found to have polyps in the colon, a rectal mass with eccentric thickening of the rectum, a moderately enlarged prostate, and multiple liver masses suggestive of metastasis upon further investigation. Initially thought to be colorectal cancer with metastasis, it was eventually diagnosed as stage IV prostate adenocarcinoma with metastases to the liver and rectum. It is very unusual for prostate cancer to present with distal metastasis to the liver and rectum, as in this case.

Summary: This study investigated the current practice of initial pediatric burn pain assessment and management at a major trauma center in Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The results showed that most pediatric burn patients received pain assessment, but a substantial proportion of children were not managed using recommended age-specific tools. Therefore, prompt delivery of analgesia should be prioritized for pediatric burns, and the use of age-appropriate tools for pain assessment is recommended but optional.
