Industrial wastes may produce leachates that can contaminate the aquatic ecosystem. Toxicity testing in acute and chronic levels is essential to assess environmental risks from the soluble fractions of these wastes, since only chemical analysis may not be adequate to classify the hazard of an industrial waste. In this study, ten samples of solid wastes from textile, metal-mechanic, and pulp and paper industries were analyzed by acute and chronic toxicity tests with Daphnia magna and Vibrio fischeri. A metal-mechanic waste (sample MM3) induced the highest toxicity level to Daphniamagna (CE50,48 h = 2.21%). A textile waste induced the highest toxicity level to Vibrio fischeri (sample TX2, CE50,30 min = 12.08%). All samples of pulp and paper wastes, and a textile waste ( sample TX2) induced chronic effects on reproduction, length, and longevity of Daphnia magna. These results could serve as an alert about the environmental risks of an inadequate waste classification method.

Membrane adsorption with polyacrylonitrile prepared with superfine powder-activated carbon, case study: separation process applied in water treatment containing diclofenac

Juliana do Carmo, Naiara Mottim Justino, Marcelo Seleme Matias, Rodrigo Costa Puerari, William Gerson Matias, David Ladner, Denice Schulz Vicentini, Maria Eliza Nagel Hassemer

Summary: Polyacrylonitrile (PAN) membranes combined with superfine powder activated carbon (S-PAC) have potential applications in water treatment. The composite membranes (PAN/S-PAC) exhibit micro and nanoparticles that interact with diclofenac (DCF) in water, and higher S-PAC concentrations improve water flux and DCF removal efficiency. The study suggests that PAN/S-PAC (3.0) is the optimal composition.

Mechanical pretreatment of municipal biowaste to produce an aqueous slurry dedicated to anaerobic digestion

Paul Moretti, Mariana Moreira de Oliveira, Remy Bayard, Pierre Buffiere, Joacio Morais de Araujo, Armando Borges de Castilhos, Remy Gourdon

Summary: The study showed that wet pressing separation was an efficient pretreatment to improve and facilitate methane production by anaerobic digestion of biowaste such as household biowaste (HBW), restaurant biowaste (RBW), and supermarket biowaste (SBW). Green biowaste (GBW) had a lower methane yield and poorer pretreatment effect.

Post-consumer plastic packaging waste flow analysis for Brazil: The challenges moving towards a circular economy

Isabella Pimentel Pincelli, Armando Borges de Castilhos Junior, Marcelo Seleme Matias, Emilia Wanda Rutkowski

Summary: Plastic packaging waste is generated in large quantities, with a significant portion in Brazil not being monitored for proper management. Only a small percentage of plastic packaging waste is recycled, highlighting the need for improved information systems, social inclusion of informal waste collectors, and development towards a circular economy.

Summary: Pre-treatments are necessary to prepare biowaste for anaerobic digestion, by removing undesirable materials and extracting readily biodegradable organic fractions. This study investigated two wet mechanical pre-treatment methods on urban household biowaste and observed that increasing the liquid to solid ratio improved the proportion of extracted biodegradable organic matter and biomethane potentials.

Summary: The study examines the oxidative stress caused by the binary mixture of silver nanoparticles and glyphosate in Daphnia magna. The results show that this mixture induces biochemical responses indicative of oxidative damage, leading to negative effects on the fitness, survival, and reproduction of Daphnia magna.

Summary: Anaerobic digestion is an effective method for treating organic solid waste and producing biogas and digested material for agricultural use. A study in Brazil investigated the effects of using digested food waste on lettuce growth and soil composition. The results showed that using digested materials can replace some mineral fertilizers, but further research is needed to improve its performance.

Effect of Spent Mushroom Substrate on Azo Dye Removal and Effluent Treatment

Juliana Barden Schallemberger, William Gerson Matias, Nelson Libardi, Maria Eliza Nagel-Hassemer, Rodrigo Costa Puerari, Alexandre Rasi Aoki

Summary: This study evaluated the removal mechanisms of azo dyes from synthetic textile wastewater using spent mushroom substrate (SMS). The simultaneous adsorption and enzymatic degradation were analyzed. The effect of pH, SMS concentration and temperature were studied. The maximum enzymatic degradation (16.36%) was obtained at pH 4 and 65 g SMS L-1, whereas the maximum adsorption (62.86%) at pH 8 and 155 g SMS L-1, both at 25 degrees C. The simultaneous enzymatic degradation and adsorption led to the removal of 75.67%. with increased color change. The kinetic study showed that dye adsorption was obtained in the first 30 minutes while the enzymatic degradation increased slowly over the time. The treatment with SMS resulted in the removal of 28.75% of the true color and no increase of effluent toxicity.

A review on hydrothermal carbonization of potential biomass wastes, characterization and environmental applications of hydrochar, and biorefinery perspectives of the process

Matheus Cavali, Nelson Libardi Junior, Julia Dutra de Sena, Adenise Lorenci Woiciechowski, Carlos Ricardo Soccol, Paulo Belli Filho, Remy Bayard, Hassen Benbelkacem, Armando Borges de Castilhos Junior

Summary: This article reviews the potential of hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) as a route for waste biomass valorization, emphasizing the characterization and environmental utilization of hydrochar and its biorefinery potential. HTC and co-hydrothermal carbonization (Co-HTC) can be applied to crop and forestry residues and sewage sludge, providing high hydrochar yields under specific process conditions. The physicochemical properties of hydrochar, determined by different techniques, are crucial in defining its best applications, including pollutant removal, soil improvement, atmospheric pollutant adsorption, energy carrier, and carbon sequestration.

Individual and combined toxicity of imidacloprid and two seed dressing insecticides on collembolans Folsomia candida

Paulo Roger Lopes Alves, Rafael Soares de Araujo, Felipe Ogliari Bandeira, William Gerson Matias

Summary: The aim of this study was to investigate the chronic toxicity of three pesticides (IMI, CLO, and FIP) on the soil insect Folsomia candida, both as single exposures and binary mixtures. The study found that the individual pesticides reduced reproduction, but the mixtures had a weaker effect. Data on the toxic effects of IMI in a mixture with other seed dressing insecticides provides useful information for environmental risk assessors, reducing uncertainties about the ecological risk of pesticide exposure and enabling the use of multiple insecticides in soil management.

Co-hydrothermal carbonization of pine residual sawdust and non-dewatered sewage sludge - effect of reaction conditions on hydrochar characteristics

Matheus Cavali, Hassen Benbelkacem, Boram Kim, Remy Bayard, Nelson Libardi Junior, Dayane Gonzaga Domingos, Adenise Lorenci Woiciechowski, Armando Borges de Castilhos Junior

Summary: Waste valorization is crucial for a circular bioeconomy, and finding suitable processes to utilize different wastes for energy, chemicals, and materials is necessary. This study proposed a new approach called Co-HTC, which involves co-hydrothermal carbonization of pine residual sawdust and non-dewatered sewage sludge, without adding extra water. The hydrochar produced through this approach showed high fuel ratio, heating value, and nutrient retention, making it a promising option for managing lignocellulosic wastes and sewage sludges.
