The effects of grape-tobacco intercropping patterns on populations of grape phylloxera, Daktulosphaira vitifoliae Fitch, as well as on the growth and development of the infested vines were evaluated in the field and the impact of an aqueous tobacco root extract on grape phylloxera was evaluated using a laboratory bioassay. The aqueous tobacco root extract exhibited biological activity against this pest. The egg mortality, nymph mortality, development period, life span and female fecundity were significantly affected. In the field trial, grape phylloxera populations were clearly lower as compared to the monoculture pattern. However, the rates of newly developed roots and newly infested grape roots were significantly higher and lower, in intercropping patterns than in the vine monoculture, respectively. The grape phylloxera population number on the grape roots decreased each year, and the vine trees gradually renewed upon continuous intercropping with tobacco over three years. These results confirmed that intercropping grapes with tobacco can effectively control grape phylloxera in an infested vineyard. The results also indicated that additional crops could be intercropped with grapes and are effective against grape phylloxera, which should be explored as an integrated approach for controlling the pest.

Socially Responsible Human Resource Management and Employee Moral Voice: Based on the Self-determination Theory

Hongdan Zhao, Yuanhua Chen, Weiwei Liu

Summary: This study constructs a theoretical model based on the self-determination theory to explore how socially responsible human resource management (SRHRM) influences employee moral voice through autonomous motivation and considers the moderating role of person-organization value fit. With a two-stage research method and analysis of 260 valid data, the study found that SRHRM promotes employee moral voice and this positive linkage is mediated by autonomous motivation. Furthermore, the findings reveal that person-organization fit moderates the indirect influences of SRHRM on moral voice via autonomous motivation.

Summary: This study characterized the immune microenvironment subtypes of liver metastases and identified potential mechanisms using mass cytometry, transcriptomic and whole-exome sequencing. Five distinct immune subtypes were identified, and patients with terminally exhausted or rare T-cell-inflamed characteristics showed worse prognosis. Increased intratumor heterogeneity, somatic mutations in TP53, KRAS, APC, and PIK3CA, and hyperactivated hypoxia signaling contributed to the formation of these aggressive subtypes. SLC2A1 was found to promote immune suppression and escape in liver metastatic lesions through interaction with Spp1 thorn macrophages and regulatory T cells, and also played a role in primary colorectal cancer.

Integrative metabolomic and transcriptomic analysis reveals difference in glucose and lipid metabolism in the longissimus muscle of Luchuan and Duroc pigs

Liyan Deng, Wangchang Li, Weiwei Liu, Yanwen Liu, Bingkun Xie, Martien A. M. Groenen, Ole Madsen, Xiaogan Yang, Zhonglin Tang

Summary: This study compared the metabolic and transcriptomic profiles of Duroc and Luchuan pigs' longissimus dorsi muscle. The results showed that Luchuan pigs had lower levels of certain amino acids, organic acids and nucleic acids, bile acids and hormones, while higher levels of glycerophospholipids, fatty acids, oxidized lipids, alcohols, and amines. Transcriptome analysis also revealed upregulation of genes related to key energy metabolic pathways in Luchuan muscle, while downregulation of genes related to fatty acid oxidation and cholesterol synthesis.

Concerns about COVID-19 Vaccine Hesitancy among Law Enforcement Officers: Prevalence and Risk Factor Data from a Nationally Representative Sample in the United States

Bruce G. Taylor, Elizabeth A. Mumford, Alejandra M. Kaplan, Weiwei Liu

Summary: There is a lack of research on COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy among law enforcement officers, which hinders the development of health messaging for both officers and the communities they serve. This study aimed to address this gap by conducting the first nationally representative survey of officers on COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy. The findings revealed that 40% of officers were hesitant towards the COVID-19 vaccine, with factors such as education, age, experience, health checkups, and agency policies influencing their hesitancy.

Mincle-GSDMD-mediated release of IL-1β small extracellular vesicles from hepatic macrophages in ethanol-induced liver injury

Quanri Zhang, Weiwei Liu, Katarzyna Bulek, Han Wang, Megan R. McMullen, Xiaoqin Wu, Nicole Welch, Renliang Zhang, Jaividhya Dasarathy, Srinivasan Dasarathy, Laura E. Nagy, Xiaoxia Li

Summary: This study investigated the association between the endogenous Mincle ligand beta-glucosylceramide (beta-GluCer) and the severity of alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD). The results showed that beta-GluCer concentrations were increased in the serum of patients with severe AH and correlated with disease severity. The study also revealed that beta-GluCer activates Mincle-dependent gasdermin D-mediated formation and release of IL-1 beta-containing extracellular vesicles (sEVs), which contribute to hepatocyte cell death and the pathogenesis of ALD.

SEC11A contributes to tumour progression of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma

Hailong Shen, Fangzheng Yi, Zhao Ding, Weiwei Liu, Ping Liu, Zixi Wang, Shixian Liu, Yehai Liu, Dapeng Li

Summary: This study investigated the expression and role of SEC11A in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). The results showed that SEC11A expression was significantly elevated in HNSCC tissues compared to adjacent normal tissues. Functional assays demonstrated that SEC11A knockdown reduced cell proliferation, migration, and invasion in vitro, and inhibited tumor growth in vivo. These findings suggest that SEC11A plays a crucial role in HNSCC proliferation and progression, and may serve as a potential therapeutic target.

AKAP12 promotes cancer stem cell-like phenotypes and activates STAT3 in colorectal cancer

Ke Li, Xuan Wu, Yuan Li, Ting-Ting Hu, Weifeng Wang, Frank J. Gonzalez, Weiwei Liu

Summary: This study finds that AKAP12 is associated with stem cell characteristics in colorectal cancer stem cells and regulates the development of colorectal cancer. By regulating the expression of AKAP12 gene, colony formation, sphere formation, and stem cell marker expression in colorectal cancer cells can be reduced. AKAP12 may affect the expression of stemness markers through the AKAP12/PKC/STAT3 signaling pathway, making it an important therapeutic target for blocking the development of colorectal cancer.
