In this study we have developed a process for optimizing fusing conditions to maximize the bonding strength between a fabric and a fusible interlining before-and-after drying process using the Taguchi method. Four parameters, including types of fusible interlining, fusing temperature, fusing pressure, and fusing time, which are regarded as the most important factors from previous studies, were optionally selected to optimize the quality of fused composites. The Taguchi processes has the following steps: (1) calculate the signal-to-noise (SN) ratios of repeated experimental observations; (2) find the corresponding conditions that influence fusing for a given fabric; (3) determine the optimum values of the fusing conditions; (4) calculate the prediction interval of maximum bonding strength of the fused composite with optimum fusing conditions; (5) certify the Taguchi processes that apply; and finally, (6) compare the expectation losses before and after improving bonding strength of the fused composite. The process was applied to 11 different 100% wool and wool/polyester-blended fabrics with the specified experimental design using an optimum orthogonal array table. Conclusively, with the Taguchi processes applied in this study, we can easily determine the optimum fusing conditions for the maximization of bonding strength without any defects of fused composites with simple experiments.
