A novel method to enable asymmetric reduction of ketones by an alcohol dehydrogenase from Geotrichum candidum in a supercritical carbon dioxide and water biphasic system is described. The addition of sodium bicarbonate improved the reactivity up to a practical level while retaining excellent enantioselectivity. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
