Chemoenzymatic preparation of ribose, deoxyribose and arabinose 5-phosphates was accomplished. These compounds were tested as starting materials in the enzymatic preparation of natural and modified purine and pyrimidine nucleosides, using an overexpressed Escherichia coli phosphopentomutase. Effect of Clopidogrel and Aspirin vs Aspirin Alone on Migraine Headaches After Transcatheter Atrial Septal Defect Closure One-Year Results of the CANOA Randomized Clinical Trial

Jerome Wintzer-Wehekind, Eric Horlick, Reda Ibrahim, Asim N. Cheema, Marino Labinaz, Najaf Nadeem, Mark Osten, Melanie Cote, Josep Ramon Marsal, Donald Rivest, Alier Marrero, Christine Houde, Josep Rodes-Cabau

Summary: Adding clopidogrel to aspirin for 3 months after transcatheter atrial septal defect (ASD) closure reduces the incidence of new-onset migraine attacks. Following clopidogrel cessation at 3 months, the incidence and severity of migraine attacks progressively decrease over time, with most patients experiencing improvement or resolution within 6 to 12 months of follow-up.

One Step Histological Detection and Staining of the PTEN Tumor Suppressor Protein by a Single Strand DNA

Gloria Longinotti, Gabriel Ybarra, Susana Vighi, Claudia Perandones, Javier Montserrat, Juan Sebastian Yakisich, Mariano Grasselli, Martin Radrizzani

Summary: This article introduces a method using two synthetic molecules to standardize the detection of protein markers in histological sections. By combining aptamers and G-quadruplex, this method enables reproducible results in staining cancer markers in histological sections, offering a synthetic and standardized approach for prognostic marker detection in cancer.

Cost-effectiveness of implantable cardioverter-defibrillators for primary prevention of sudden cardiac death

Aida Ribera, Emmanuel Gimenez, Gerard Oristrell, Dimelza Osorio, Josep Ramon Marsal, Lidia Garcia-Perez, Monica Ballesteros, Eduard Rodenas, Yassin Belahnech, Roxana Escalona, Nuria Rivas, Ivo Roca-Luque, Ignacio Ferreira-Gonzalez, Mireia Espallargues

Summary: This study evaluated the cost-effectiveness of implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICD) for the primary prevention of cardiac arrhythmias. The results showed that ICD systems are cost-effective for patients with ischemic and nonischemic heart disease younger than 68 years old. However, for older nonischemic patients, the cost-effectiveness ratio is higher.

Trypanocidal activity of the anthocyanidin delphinidin, a non-competitive inhibitor of arginine kinase

Edward Valera-Vera, Chantal Reigada, Melisa Saye, Fabio A. Digirolamo, Facundo Galceran, Mariana R. Miranda, Claudio A. Pereira

Summary: The study showed that the anthocyanidin delphinidin inhibits the activity of Trypanosoma cruzi arginine kinase with a non-competitive mechanism. Delphinidin was found to exert trypanocidal activity with low toxicity, making it a potential candidate for the development of drugs for Chagas disease treatment.

Revascularized ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction. Temporal trends in contemporary therapies and impact on outcomes

Aida Ribera, Josep R. Marsal, Maria T. Faixedas, Alba Rosas, Helena Tizon-Marcos, Sergio Rojas, Carlos Labata, Merida Cardenas, Silvia Homs, Carlos Tomas-Querol, Joan Garcia-Picart, Gerard Roura, Monica Masotti, Josepa Mauri, Jose Ignacio Pijoan, Jose A. Barrabes, Ignacio Ferreira-Gonzalez

Summary: This study assessed the clinical practice trends and potential impact on 2-year outcomes of drug-eluting stents (DES), ticagrelor, prasugrel, and prolonged dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) in patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) who underwent primary percutaneous intervention. Despite the increased use and duration of these treatments between 2010 and 2017, there was no substantial reduction in major cardiovascular outcomes.

Potentially inappropriate prescribing: Usefulness of STOPP/START criteria version 2 in Catalonian elderly population

C. Fuertes Abardia, P. Ballesta Juan, I Cruz Esteve, G. Galindo Ortego, J. R. Marsal Mora, X. Gomez-Arbones

Summary: The study aims to measure the prevalence of potentially inappropriate prescribing (PIP) among the elderly population in Catalonia and evaluate its association with factors such as polypharmacy, gender, age, and sociodemographic conditions. The overall prevalence of PIP is found to be 89.6%, with certain drugs and patient conditions significantly associated with PIP.

Environmental fate of dibutylphthalate in agricultural plastics: Photodegradation, migration and ecotoxicological impact on soil

Giselle Berenstein, Enrique A. Hughes, Anita Zalts, Silvana Basack, Sergio M. Bonesi, Javier M. Montserrat

Summary: Phthalic acid esters (PAEs), commonly found in polyethylene covers used in horticultural production units, were found to migrate to soil and atmosphere. The migration of PAEs was influenced by temperature, film thickness, and plastic aging. In addition, PAEs were shown to have an impact on soil biota, reducing cocoon viability and the number of juveniles. Bioindicators exposed to DBP also exhibited changes in enzyme activities.

Thermal paper as a potential source of bisphenol A for humans and the environment: migration and ecotoxicological impact

Soledad Nasello, Erica Beiguel, Gretel Fito-Friedrichs, Carmen Irala, Giselle Berenstein, Silvana Basack, Javier M. Montserrat

Summary: The objective of this study was to evaluate the potential impact of thermal paper tickets used in Argentina as a source of bisphenol A (BPA) on humans and the environment. The study found that thermal paper contains BPA, which can potentially impact human health through contact and ingestion. BPA from thermal paper can also migrate into water and soil, posing a potential environmental contamination.

Prehospital stratification and prioritisation of non-ST-segment elevation acute coronary syndrome patients (NSTEACS): the MARIACHI scale

Silvia Sola-Munoz, Jorge Morales, Xavier Jimenez-Fabrega, Sonia Jimenez-Delgado, Youcef Azeli, J. Ramon Marsal, Sara Jordan, Josepa Mauri, Javier Jacob

Summary: The objective of this study was to develop and validate a risk scale (MARIACHI) to identify patients at an increased risk of mortality in non-ST-segment elevation acute coronary syndrome (NSTEACS) in a prehospital setting. The model, including age, systolic blood pressure, heart rate, Killip-Kimball classification, and ST depression, showed good discrimination and calibration in predicting high-risk NSTEACS patients. This scale could assist in treatment decisions and referrals at the prehospital level.

Pyrrolidine-based C1-symmetric chiral transition metal complexes as catalysts in the asymmetric organic transformations

Geeta Devi Yadav, Pooja Chaudhary, Balaram Pani, Surendra Singh

Summary: Chiral transition metal complexes with privileged ligands are efficient catalysts for various asymmetric organic transformations. Transition metal complexes of C1-symmetric pyrrolidine-based ligands have been widely used in asymmetric organic reactions. However, a comprehensive review article on the transition metal complexes of chiral C1-symmetric pyrrolidine-based ligands derived from (L)-proline has not been published.
