The count intercept is a robust method for the numerical analysis of fabrics Launeau and Robin (1996). It counts the number of intersections between a set of parallel scan lines and a mineral phase, which must be identified on a digital image. However, the method is only sensitive to boundaries and therefore supposes the user has some knowledge about their significance. The aim of this paper is to show that a proper grey level detection of boundaries along scan lines is sufficient to calculate the two-dimensional anisotropy of grain or crystal distributions without any particular image processing. Populations of grains and crystals usually display elliptical anisotropies in rocks. When confirmed by the intercept analysis, a combination of a minimum of 3 mean length intercept roses, taken on 3 more or less perpendicular sections, allows the calculation of 3-dimensional ellipsoids and the determination of their standard deviation with direction and intensity in 3 dimensions as well. The feasibility of this quick method is attested by numerous examples on theoretical objects deformed by active and passive deformation, on BSE images of synthetic magma flow, on drawing or direct analysis of thin section pictures of sandstones and on digital images of granites directly taken and measured in the field. Experimentally Induced Volumetric Re-equilibration of Plagioclase-Hosted Melt Inclusions

Melissa J. Drignon, Laurent Arbaret, Nicolas Cluzel, Roger L. Nielsen, Robert J. Bodnar

Summary: The application of melt inclusions to infer magmatic processes relies on the assumption that the inclusions have remained constant in mass and volume since trapping. Studies on re-equilibration behavior of melt inclusions in different host phases reveal that the process can vary, with some experiencing irreversible changes during heating experiments. The response of melt inclusions to exposure to high temperatures and extended experimental runs can involve both ductile and brittle deformation in the host rock, leading to changes in volume and gas exsolution.

Crustal Fault Zones (CFZ) as Geothermal Power Systems: A Preliminary 3D THM Model Constrained by a Multidisciplinary Approach

Hugo Duwiquet, Laurent Guillou-Frottier, Laurent Arbaret, Mathieu Bellanger, Theophile Guillon, Michael J. Heap

Summary: The study of the Pontgibaud crustal fault zone utilizes field measurements to control the three-dimensional geological structure. New two-dimensional and three-dimensional observations reveal a well-defined spatial propagation of fractures and voids, with consistent fracture architecture at different scales. Additionally, measurements on porosity and permeability validate high permeability values in highly fractured and altered samples.

Anatomy and evolution of a migmatite-cored extensional metamorphic dome and interaction with syn-kinematic intrusions, the Mykonos-Delos-Rheneia MCC

Laurent Jolivet, Violaine Sautter, Isabelle Moretti, Tommy Vettor, Zozi Papadopoulou, Romain Augier, Yoann Denele, Laurent Arbaret

Summary: The post-orogenic extension in back-arc regions is associated with metamorphic core complexes (MCCs) and granitic intrusions. The intrusion of high-temperature MMCs and granitoids in the Cyclades Archipelago is controlled by regional extension and detachments. Structural studies based on field surveys of neighboring islands show the interaction between the migmatitic core of the MCC and the intrusion in the North Cycladic Detachment System.

Anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility, gravimetry and geochronology of the Cerne granite, Ribeira Belt, southern Brazil

Evelyn Kleuser, Carlos Eduardo de Mesquita Barros, Carlos Jose Archanjo, Barbara Carolina Dressel, Luis Gustavo de Castro

Summary: The Cerne granite is an elongated pluton that crosscuts supracrustal metamorphic rocks in the NE-SW direction, parallel with the Ribeira Belt trend. Analysis of the rock structures and emplacement mechanisms suggests that local extension stresses associated with a sinistral strike-slip system likely controlled the magma emplacement, leading to the formation of the granite at around 614 +/- 8 Ma.

Multiple sources and multi-stage emplacement of the Esperanca Granitic Complex and its relationship with the Patos - Campina Grande shear zone system, Borborema Province - NE Brazil

Jefferson Valdemiro de Lima, Ignez de Pinho Guimaraes, Sergio Pacheco Neves, Carlos Jose Archanjo, Jose Victor Antunes de Amorim, Douglas Jose Silva Farias, Jose Vinicius Martins

Summary: The Ediacaran evolution of the Borborema Province in northeastern Brazil is characterized by expressive granitic magmatism and a complex system of transcurrent shear zones. The Esperanca Complex, consisting of five plutons, was formed between two shear zones in the central-eastern part of the province. Study of the complex using various geochronological and geochemical methods revealed different sources and processes involved in the formation of the plutons.

The onset of the right-lateral strike-slip setting recorded in magnetic fabrics of A-type granite plutons of the Ribeira belt (SE Brazil)

Carlos J. Archanjo, Carlos A. Salazar, Fabrizio P. Caltabellota, Sergio W. O. Rodrigues

Summary: Strike-slip shear zones formed during continental collisions accommodate the convergence and indentation of rigid cratonic blocks, with shear deformation associated with syntectonic granitic magmatism in high-temperature settings. The A-type plutons constrain the onset of ductile transpressional deformation at approximately 595 Ma and continued up to 550 Ma in the western Ribeira belt, marking a transition to more brittle transtensional conditions. These results are consistent with the convergence and indentation of the Congo-Sao Francisco craton, partitioning deformation across the orogen and promoting lateral escape through dextral shear zones.

Rheology, shear zone width, microstructural evolution and tectonics of a zippered strike-slip shear zone: The Senador Pompeu shear zone, northern Borborema Province, Brazil

Carlos F. Avila, Carlos J. Archanjo, John P. Platt, Haakon Fossen

Summary: Studies show the important role of strike-slip shear zones in the Borborema Province during the Brasiliano orogeny, but little quantitative research has been done on key aspects of shear zone deformation. A comprehensive structural study of the Senador Pompeu shear zone was conducted, revealing changes in shear zone width, quartz deformation microstructures, geobarometry, and shear zone width modelling. The results suggest a short-lived activity and a significant depth difference along the shear zone.

U-Pb and 40Ar/39Ar geochronology and tectonic setting of the peralkaline magmatism in the Borborema Province (NE Brazil)

Juan S. Hernandez, Carlos J. Archanjo, Maria Helena B. M. Hollanda, Paulo M. Vasconcelos, Laecio C. Souza

Summary: A study on the Aegirine-augite granite and syenite plutons and dikes in the Borborema Province provides chronological constraints using SHRIMP zircon U-Pb and laser step-heating 40Ar/39Ar determinations. The results suggest that the alkaline magmatism in the central and northern parts of the province occurred between 600 and 590 million years ago, shortly after the continental collisions that formed the province in the Ediacaran. The emplacement of these rocks was influenced by crustal extension and reactivation of deep fault segments.

Unraveling the tectonic setting and crystallization history of the Equatorial Atlantic Magmatic Province

Antomat Avelino de Macedo Filho, Maria Helena B. M. Hollanda, Carlos Jose Archanjo, Carlos Fernando Avila, Alisson Lopes Oliveira

Summary: In NE Brazil, mafic dikes and sills intrude the Borborema Province and Parnaiba basin, forming the Equatorial Atlantic Magmatic Province. The Rio Cear ' a-Mirim dike swarm is a huge arcuate structure composed of dikes. Other giant swarms are also found in different orientations in the Borborema Province. Through analyzing crystal size distributions, it is found that the dikes and sills have similar crystallization histories, with the dikes crystallizing at a deeper setting.

Late Ediacaran lateral-escape tectonics as recorded by the Patos shear zone (Borborema Province, NE Brazil)

Carlos Jose Archanjo, Maria Helena Bezerra Maia de Hollanda, Luis Gustavo Ferreira Viegas

Summary: The lateral escape tectonics mediated by strike-slip fault zones are an efficient mechanism of rock deformation in collision zones. The study in Northeastern Brazil reveals the timing of high-grade metamorphism and compositions of terranes involved in shear deformation. Partial melting was found to have occurred in the Late Ediacaran, and differential shear zone exhumation is indicated by cooling rates.
