Summary: The long-term sediment demand of the Dutch coast is important for the current Dutch Coastal Flood and Erosion Risk Management policy. The Coastal Genesis 2 research programme was initiated to address the sustainability of this policy under sea level rise by focusing on key uncertainties in the conceptual model of the sediment demand. The analysis of this programme's scientific contributions highlights the importance of synthesising new insights into shared conceptual models for impact in policy and practice.

Summary: This article presents a new adaptive metric distillation approach that significantly improves the backbone features of student networks and achieves better classification results. Previous knowledge distillation methods focused on transferring knowledge across classifier logits or feature structure, neglecting the excessive sample relations in the feature space. The proposed collaborative adaptive metric distillation (CAMD) optimizes the relationship between key pairs, adapts the metric for student embeddings using teacher embeddings as supervision, and employs a collaborative scheme for knowledge aggregation. Extensive experiments show that CAMD outperforms other cutting-edge distillers and sets a new state-of-the-art in both classification and retrieval tasks.

Summary: Artificial neural networks (ANNs) are widely used for modeling behavioral and neural data. The authors present neuroconnectionism as a research program using ANNs as a language for expressing falsifiable theories about brain computations. They argue that focusing on the successes and failures of current ANNs is not the right approach to assess the promise of neuroconnectionism, and instead propose to evaluate its capacity to generate novel insights. Reviewing past and present neuroconnectionist projects, they conclude that the research program is highly progressive in providing new understanding of the brain.

Summary: Graph neural networks (GNNs) have achieved impressive performance in recommendation tasks, but they often suffer from data sparsity. Pre-training techniques have shown success in mitigating data sparsity, leading to the potential application of graph pre-training in GNN-based recommendations. However, existing mechanisms used in other domains are not directly applicable to GNN-based recommendations due to distinct graph properties. To address these challenges, we propose the ADAPT framework, which captures both common knowledge and uniqueness across different graphs without transferring user/item embeddings, and extensive experiments have verified its effectiveness and superiority.

Summary: This paper examines the substitutional and complementary effects of synchronous deployment of innovation search and management innovation on innovative performance. The findings support the theoretical predictions of a substitutional effect between external search depth and management innovation, and a complementary effect between external search breadth and management innovation. The study provides new theoretical insights into the synchronicity of innovation search and management innovation.

Summary: This study investigates the performance of innovative firms and explores whether they should adopt a specialized or ambidextrous R&D strategy. By comparing a firm's strategy with industry peers, the study identifies how the advantages of these strategies change across industries and which strategy is optimal for a firm. The findings reveal that having a different R&D strategy from industry norms enhances performance, while following the same strategy as others in the industry decreases firm performance. The study also explains how certain industry environments can reduce the need for ambidexterity and help specialized firms improve performance.

Summary: We studied how strategic leaders of established firms frame exploration of digital opportunities at the interfaces of organizational hierarchy. Our analysis revealed that top management teams adopt a paradoxical framing of exploration, creating a liminal space with unstable boundaries between convergence and divergence. Middle managers skillfully navigate this space by combining framing with substantive and symbolic actions to blur the boundaries of exploration. Our findings contribute to understanding the role of framing in setting boundaries for exploration between top management teams and middle managers.

Summary: Our case study looks into how a pharmaceutical company develops a completely new medical technology. We question whether existing patterns of actions or new organizational capabilities are necessary for such radical innovation. We argue that a conceptual distinction between existing and new organizational capabilities is inadequate for describing radical innovation within an incumbent firm. Multiple modifications across systemic processes are required in developing radical innovation in a nascent innovation ecosystem, where small and interdependent innovations in organizational processes, practices, and structures can make a big difference. Balancing legitimacy-seeking and advantage-seeking actions is crucial in adapting organizational capability for innovation in the nascent innovation ecosystem.

Summary: This article explores how paradoxical tensions related to exploration-exploitation dynamics shape vicious cycles in high-growth ventures. Through a case study at a telecommunications firm in the UK, drivers for the emergence and persistence of these cycles are identified, with some associated with cycle originators and others with cycle perpetuators. The interplay between these drivers culminates in tension escalation and political turnover, demonstrating a self-reinforcing process in the cycles.

Summary: Sustainability considerations are increasingly important for manufacturing companies, especially in the early stages of product design, to promote the development of products and processes with better environmental and social benefits. However, existing sustainability assessment tools are challenging to apply in the uncertain and data-scarce frontend of innovation. A systematic literature review provides best practices and design propositions to improve early-stage sustainability assessment, along with recommendations for designing and implementing sustainability assessment tools in technology development. Opportunities for future research, including refining the design propositions and operationalizing early-stage sustainability assessment, are also proposed.

Summary: Higher education institutions are encouraged to become entrepreneurial universities to deliver their third mission and cultivate entrepreneurial graduates. This paper argues that many of the activities engaged in by these institutions can be categorized as intrapreneurship rather than entrepreneurship. The focus on intrapreneurial activities is seen as crucial for sustaining the entrepreneurial university status. By examining the entrepreneurial activities of five universities in Europe, this research highlights the intrapreneurial dimensions and provides insights for future research in the context of intrapreneurship and the entrepreneurial university.

Summary: This study introduces the concept of the 'mixed gamble' of external search breadth for family firms, highlighting the unique trade-off between financial and socioemotional wealth gains and losses. The study examines the influence of family management and family generational stage on this mixed gamble, as well as the impact of export propensity. The findings suggest that family firms with greater family management and in first-generation prioritize current SEW losses over potential gains, resulting in lower external search breadth. However, export propensity can alter this trade-off and lead to higher external search breadth.
