Among toxicities associated with molecular targeted agents (MTA), cardiovascular toxicities remain largely unknown or underestimated. Their frequency is variable and dependent on the compound. A high incidence of hypertension, symptomatic or asymptomatic left ventricular systolic dysfunction, acute coronary syndrome, arterial and venous thrombosis has been observed in patients receiving MTA. One of the most threatening complications of angiogenic inhibitors (AI) could be QT prolongation with the risk of torsade de pointes (TdP) and sudden death. QT prolongation and torsade de pointes accounted for 29% of cardiac and non-cardiac post-marketing withdrawals. The assessment of the effects of drugs on cardiac repolarization is the subject of recent guidelines and recommendations. Regulatory agencies now require practically every new pharmaceutical compound to undergo a thorough investigation of its propensity to modify cardiac repolarization. To reduce the incidence of QT prolongation and torsade de pointes in patients receiving AI, cancer patients should be closely monitored while receiving AI.

Summary: A study conducted in 2017 in France found that 36% of heart failure patients were smartphone users, and these users tended to be younger, more frequently male, have a higher educational level, live in cities, and be professionally active. Smartphone users were also less likely to have diabetes, hypertension, atrial fibrillation, or ischemic cardiopathy, but only 22% of patients were actively participating in therapeutic education programs.

Summary: This study investigated the profile and outcome of elderly patients hospitalized for Acute Heart Failure (AHF) in cardiogeriatrics departments in Val-de-Marne area of Paris. Patients in cardiogeriatrics departments were older, less independent, more often depressed, and had a higher Human Development Index compared to those in cardiology departments, but had similar prognosis in terms of AHF rehospitalization at 90 days.

Summary: This study examined the type and chronology of the first AHF symptoms before hospitalization and analyzed the French healthcare system pathways before, during, and after hospitalization. Results suggest the need for developing an AHF clinic network to provide adequate care for all HF patients and increase awareness regarding AHF symptoms.

Patients with cardiac amyloidosis are at a greater risk of mortality and hospital readmission after acute heart failure

Emmanuelle Berthelot, Amaury Broussier, Luc Hittinger, Cristiano Donadio, Xavier Rovani, Emmanuel Salengro, Richard Megbemado, Christian Godreuil, Joel Belmin, Jean Philippe David, Bastien Genet, Thibaud Damy

Summary: Cardiac amyloidosis is a significant risk factor for heart failure patients, leading to higher death and hospital readmission rates compared to those without this condition. This study found that patients with cardiac amyloidosis had elevated heart rate and brain natriuretic peptide levels, and lower blood pressure, weight, and body mass index values upon discharge. Furthermore, cardiac amyloidosis patients experienced higher death and hospital readmission rates, occurring sooner after discharge, highlighting the importance of active management for these patients.
