Summary: The functionalization of gold nanoparticles with thiol molecules in solution is crucial for their application development. In this study, the changes in localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) peak due to the reaction between thiol molecules and gold nanoparticles were investigated using UV-visible spectroscopy. The saturation of thiol molecules on the nanoparticle surface was confirmed, and the wavelength shift was accurately predicted using an analytical model. The kinetics of the functionalization reaction were found to be rapid, completing in less than an hour.

Summary: Photodynamic and photothermal therapies are promising candidates for multimodal anticancer therapies, and combining octahedral molybdenum clusters with plasmonic spherical gold nanoparticles can enhance their photophysical properties synergistically. By careful selection of spacing between the cluster and the gold nanoparticle, significant improvements in luminescence and photosensitizing properties of the cluster were achieved compared to similar gold-free particles. The cluster complex also facilitated energy conversion to heat by gold particles, increasing the heating rate under laser irradiation.

Summary: The study demonstrates the simultaneous utilization of hot carriers in the photocatalytic transformation of benzylamine and the catalytic oxidation of 4-methoxybenzylamine using gold nanoparticles. Excitation of AuNP allows tuning of charge carrier potential energy relative to reactants' redox potential, leading to energetically favorable product formation. The reaction mechanism is proposed based on in situ Raman spectroscopy, NMR spectroscopy, and GC-MS analysis of reaction intermediates and products.

Summary: Glycolipid chips with a double layer of Au nanoparticles were developed for detecting biological toxins. The chips consisted of an under and an upper layer of Au nanoparticles on glass plates, linked with 1,8-octanedithiol using a self-assembled monolayer technique. A tris-sialo glycosphingolipid, ganglioside GT1b, was immobilized on the upper layer and botulinum toxin was detected using localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR). The GT1bCer-coated chip with a double layer of Au nanoparticles showed enhanced LSPR detection of the toxin compared to single monolayers. The combination of 60 and 40 nm Au nanoparticles in the under and upper layer, respectively, achieved the best results for toxin detection below 5 ng/mL using a portable LSPR device.

Summary: Due to their unique plasmonic properties, noble metals have become the preferred materials for applications in photovoltaics, photocatalysis, and sensors. In this study, gold (Au) monolayers with adjustable particle diameters and optical properties were successfully fabricated on transparent indium tin oxide (ITO) through a simple electrochemical deposition. The gold nanoparticles on ITO were spherical and isolated, identified as Au0 nanoparticles. The size and population density of the gold nanoparticles on ITO surface increased at lower current densities, resulting in higher light scattering.

Summary: Alzheimer's disease is a major cause of senile dementia and is characterized by the aggregation of neurofibrillary tangles and amyloid plaques in the brain. The A beta 1-42 peptide is considered the primary cause of neurotoxicity due to its insolubility and subsequent aggregation. A beta 1-42 and A beta 1-40 have been identified as relevant biomarkers for AD diagnosis, and SurfaceAssisted Laser Desorption/Ionization Mass Spectrometry (SALDI-MS) was used to monitor the A beta 1-42/A beta 1-40 ratio without prior sample treatment.
