Lineament extraction approach allowed mapping of larger number of lineaments in a classical manner in tectonic and structural studies. In the present study, various techniques were adopted to extract lineaments using Landsat ETM+ images. To remove the biasness of the images, some pre-processing techniques like stream ordering, band differencing, colour texturing were employed to enhance the edges of the structural features. Extracted lineaments and its distribution and orientation were mapped using ArcGIS Spatial analyst tool. Results of the study showed maximum number of lineaments were oriented in the ENE-SWS direction with 63 degrees overall inclination. Accuracy assessment and validation were made with respect to visual interpretation and overlaying the lineament on Digital Topographic Model as well as with respect to an existing geological lineament map of the study site. The result of accuracy assessment indicates higher compatibility of Central Indian Suture with the geological map of the study area.

Stock and stability of organic carbon in soils under major agro-ecological zones and cropping systems of sub-tropical India

Summary: The study evaluated the long-term impact of agro-ecological zones and cropping systems on the stock and stability of organic carbon in soils. Results showed that rice-based systems had higher total organic carbon content and a greater proportion of non-labile carbon, while non-rice systems had a higher percentage of organic carbon in the very labile pool. Rice cultivation played a significant role in influencing the stock and stability of soil organic carbon, overshadowing the impact of companion crops in rice-based systems.

Summary: Reflectance spectroscopy was used to predict clay and CaCO3 content in soil in parts of Karnataka, India using AVIRIS-NG data. The study found that the method was more reliable for predicting CaCO3 content than clay content, with higher uncertainties in the clay estimates possibly due to the presence of various clay minerals in the soils studied.

Summary: Soil quality indicators are important tools for evaluating the ecological functions of soil. This study used the SMAF model to assess the soil quality under different nutrient management strategies in a rice-wheat cropping system. The results showed that the conjunctive application of NPK with manures improved the overall soil quality to a greater extent than other management practices.
