Two complexes, [Cu(H2PIDC)2(H2O)] (H3PIDC = 2-propyl- 1H-imidazole-4,5-dicarboxylic acid) (1) and [Co(H2MOPhIDC)2 (H2O)2] (H3MOPhIDC = 2-p-methoxyphenyl-1H-imidazole-4,5-dicarboxylic acid) (2), have been hydro(solvo)thermally synthesized and characterized by IR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, PXRD, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Both two complexes show three-dimensional supramolecular structures supported by intermolecular H-bonds. The thermal properties of the two complexes have been investigated as well.

A potential suite of climate markers of long-chain n-alkanes and alkenones preserved in the top sediments from the Pacific sector of the Southern Ocean

Xin Chen, Xiaodong Liu, Da-Cheng Lin, Jianjun Wang, Liqi Chen, Pai-Sen Yu, Linmiao Wang, Zhifang Xiong, Min-Te Chen

Summary: The study analyzed organic compounds in sediment core from the Southern Ocean, revealing long-chain n-alkanes potentially transported from Australia and New Zealand. Different carbon chain lengths of n-alkanes came from various sources such as marine phytoplankton, microalgae, terrestrial plants, and chemoautotrophic bacteria. This research highlights the potential use of delta C-13 values of long-chain n-alkanes and U-37(k) index for reconstructing the history of C-3/C-4 plants and sea surface temperature changes in the Southern Ocean.

Variability in Indonesian Throughflow Upper Hydrology in Response to Precession-Induced Tropical Climate Processes Over the Past 120 kyr

Peng Zhang, Jian Xu, Sebastian Beil, Ann Holbourn, Wolfgang Kuhnt, Tiegang Li, Zhifang Xiong, Hong Yan, Rui Cui, Heng Liu, Hanning Wu

Summary: The Indonesian Throughflow (ITF) is crucial for regulating the thermohaline balance between the Pacific and Indian Oceans, with variability driven by precessional forcing rather than monsoonal upwelling. The ITF intensity and vertical structure were controlled by Earth's axis wobble, impacting the distribution of solar radiation and influencing the Intertropical Convergence Zone and winds and temperatures over the tropical Pacific Ocean.

Sustained Deep Pacific Carbon Storage After the Mid-Pleistocene Transition Linked to Enhanced Southern Ocean Stratification

Bingbin Qin, Qi Jia, Zhifang Xiong, Tiegang Li, Thomas J. Algeo, Haowen Dang

Summary: Changes in ocean carbon inventory are likely the main factor causing the decline in glacial atmospheric pCO2. By studying the western tropical Pacific, it was found that the size-normalized weight of planktonic foraminifera can be used to estimate the paleo-deep-water CO32- concentration. It was discovered that the deep-water CO32- concentration in this region has changed since approximately 1.4 million years ago, possibly due to a weakening of North Atlantic Deep Water. The glacial and interglacial deep-water CO32- concentrations showed a gradual decline, indicating an increase in DIC content in the deep Pacific.

Achieving superior strength and ductility in 7075 aluminum alloy through the design of multi-gradient nanostructure by ultrasonic surface rolling and aging

Zhifang Xiong, Yun Jiang, Ming Yang, Yan Zhang, Lei Lei

Summary: This study investigates the microstructure and mechanical properties of 7075 aluminum alloy with ultrasonic surface rolling process (USRP) and artificial aging. The results show that a multi-gradient nanostructure (MGNS) layer is formed on the surface of the alloy, leading to improved tensile strength and comparable plasticity. Grain boundary strengthening, precipitation strengthening, dislocation strengthening, and synergistic strengthening contribute to the high strength of the aged-USRP sample.

Ocean-Forced Instability of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet Since the Mid-Pleistocene

Jiakai Wang, Zheng Tang, David J. Wilson, Fengming Chang, Zhifang Xiong, Dongyong Li, Tiegang Li

Summary: The study provides evidence on the instability of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet throughout the Pleistocene glacial/interglacial cycles and suggests a temporal link with a strengthened Antarctic Circumpolar Current, enhanced deepwater ventilation, and poleward-shifted southern westerly winds. The insights into the role of ocean-atmosphere forcing on the past behavior of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet may enhance our understanding of future changes in this region.

Monsoon- and ENSO-driven surface-water pCO2 variation in the tropical West Pacific since the Last Glacial Maximum

Zhifang Xiong, Tiegang Li, Barbel Honisch, Thomas J. Algeo, Louisa Bradtmiller, Mark Cane, Carlo Laj, Fujun Wang, Zhengyao Lu, Bingbin Qin, Fengming Chang, Xun Gong

Summary: This study investigates the influence of the East Asian monsoon (EAM) and El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) on seawater carbonate chemistry in the tropical Pacific. The results show a correlation between the intensity of the East Asian summer monsoon and variations in surface-water carbonate chemistry. Rapid changes in carbonate chemistry are linked to ENSO-like states and the East Asian winter monsoon. These findings suggest that tropical conditions play a crucial role in glacial-interglacial atmospheric CO2 concentration changes.

Precession-driven changes in air-sea CO2 exchange by East Asian summer monsoon in the Western Tropical Pacific since MIS 6

Jingteng Guo, Xiaohua Qiu, Thomas J. Algeo, Tiegang Li, Zhifang Xiong, Debo Zhao, Haowen Dang, Peijun Qiao, Bingbin Qin, Qi Jia

Summary: This study reconstructed the changes in pH and pCO(2) in the surface waters of the western Pacific Ocean over the past 150,000 years and hypothesized that these changes were driven by the precession cycle of the sun and the influence of the East Asian summer monsoon. Additionally, the study found that the increased upwelling of dissolved inorganic carbon from deep waters sourced from the Southern Ocean also affected the upper water column.
