Summary: This study aimed to investigate the construct validity of a low-cost, easily accessible tracking technique for basic open suturing tasks. The findings showed significant differences in time, distance, and motion smoothness between novice and expert groups in all four suturing tasks when tracking index finger movements using SurgTrac software on a simulator.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the impact of shorter intervals and longer intervals on proficiency-based laparoscopy simulator training. The results showed no difference between shorter and longer intervals in terms of time to reach proficiency during training and performance in the retention test.

Summary: The study compared centralized instructor-regulated training (CIRT) with home-based self-regulated training (HSRT) in laparoscopy skill training and found comparable performance improvements between the two. HSRT facilitated distributed training with greater variation in training times. Trainees performed well in performance tests, and the improvement patterns were similar in both groups.

Summary: This systematic review examined the use of standard-setting methods in simulation-based training of surgical procedures. Most studies considered and described how standard settings were established, but there were significant differences in study design, setup, and expert level classification. Surgical education is shifting towards competency-based education, with simulation-based training being increasingly used for skill acquisition and assessment.

Summary: The objective of this study was to evaluate novices' learning curves and proficiency level in LESS surgery. The results showed that specific training programs using articulated instruments had a slower learning rate but better proficiency and optimal surgical performance.

Summary: In the initial learning phase for novices, robotic-assisted cholecystectomy (RAC) showed better surgical performance and fewer complications compared to laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC), with no significant difference in operating times. Students perceived RAC as less physically demanding and frustrating than LC, indicating potential advantages for robotic-assisted surgery (RAS) over conventional laparoscopy (CL) in surgical novices.

Summary: This study aims to review the current approaches for classifying surgical skill levels and identifying skill training tools and measurement methods through a literature review. The existing surgical skill assessment approaches have been summarized, revealing various classification approaches and inconsistencies. To improve simulation-based training programs, a standardized interdisciplinary approach should be developed, specific skills for each surgical procedure should be identified, and appropriate measures for assessing these skills in simulation-based training environments should be refined.

Summary: This study identified and appraised evidence on the effectiveness of low-fidelity arthroscopic simulation in novice populations. The results showed that low-fidelity arthroscopic simulators can improve the performance of novice participants in completing basic arthroscopic procedures and may be more cost-effective than high-fidelity simulators.

Summary: The introduction of laparoscopic surgery brings various advantages, but also necessitates a shift in training modality. Proficiency-based progression training programs outside of the operating room have become crucial in bridging the skill gap and improving students' surgical abilities before performing procedures on real patients, ultimately leading to better healthcare outcomes.

Summary: The study found that surgeons with higher case volume and fellowship training performed better on simulated procedural tasks. Performance on low-difficulty level tasks was correlated with surgical volume and fellowship background, while there was minimal difference for moderate-difficulty level tasks.

Summary: This qualitative study explored first-year trainees' engagement in and perceptions of transfer of surgical skills training. The trainees described their training using sports analogies and reported visual orientations, kinaesthetic experiences, and elicited dialogues as their modes of orientation. Specific skills transfer included ambidexterity, coordination, instrument handling, and visuospatial ability. Transfer of training to the clinical setting was a challenge for the trainees, and they emphasized the importance of the work environment and supervisor-trainee relationships in the transfer process.

Summary: The study found that using 3D imaging systems significantly shortened the time needed to acquire more complex laparoscopic surgical skills (such as pattern cutting). There was a secondary learning curve when transitioning between imaging systems, but only for more complex tasks in the 2D to 3D system.

Summary: The study found that serious gaming did not increase the overall voluntary training volume for surgical residents, indicating that mandatory scheduled training courses are still necessary. Serious gaming, which is flexible and affordable, could potentially play a role in such training courses.
