Summary: This study aimed to investigate how OR staff perceived noise, whether music was considered noise and what its perceived effects were. Surgeons generally chose the music played in ORs and were likely positively inclined to its effects, while anaesthesiologists and nurses minded the lack of choice and were more likely to consider it as noise.

Summary: The study findings indicate that surgical patients' attitudes towards remote monitoring in eOR are influenced by familiarity with clinicians and healthcare systems, with a preference for local telemedicine systems over distant ones. However, barriers to eOR remote monitoring predominantly involve organizational policies, environment, culture, personnel, workflow, communication, hardware, and software aspects.

Summary: A method is developed to determine the required sample size for estimating the utilisation rate (UR) of a facility. It categorizes work process/job blocks into repetitive, semi-repetitive, or memoryless based on the variability of work content, and uses a recently developed surgery duration model to estimate UR.

Summary: The study focused on observing and recording delays during the preparatory phase of general surgery operations using a novel surgical application. Results showed a significant prolongation in preparatory time for cases with incidents, averaging 18% of the total time. Identifying and addressing these inefficiencies through targeted interventions may optimize preoperative preparation efficiency.

Summary: Operating rooms are crucial facilities in hospitals, and efficient scheduling is necessary for optimizing hospital profits and providing good healthcare services. This study focuses on OR scheduling for a Korean university hospital, considering surgeons' preferences and cooperative operations. A mathematical programming model and solution approach were proposed, demonstrating the algorithm's effectiveness in generating superior schedules compared to manual or mathematically generated ones.

Summary: The Acute Care Surgery model has direct implications on tactical and operational processes in perioperative services, indicating characteristics of a complex adaptive system. The study demonstrated that the power law relationships present in the system impact the decision-making process and potential improvements in perioperative services. Elements of complex adaptive systems in healthcare can be identified through analysis of inter-event times and understanding system-specific behaviors.

Summary: This study investigated the potential risk of different operating room architectures for Surgical Site Infections (SSI) and found no significant difference in SSI revision rates between open-plan and closed-plan operating rooms. Age and gender were not risk factors for SSI revision, while American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) classification and Body Mass Index (BMI) were identified as independent risk factors for SSI revision.

Summary: This paper focuses on the research of operating room scheduling under non-operating room anesthesia (NORA) mechanism, in the presence of the uncertainty of emergency arrivals. It is shown through experiments that the NORA mechanism can significantly improve the operating room utilization in comparison with traditional surgical anesthesia practice under different operating room settings.

Summary: The hybrid operating room combines the functionality of a standard OR with fixed advanced imaging systems for minimally invasive image-guided procedures. The advantages include more accurate treatment results, while challenges include elongation of procedure time and an increase in radiation dose. Further comparative studies are needed to investigate which procedures truly benefit from being performed in a hybrid OR.

Summary: The objective of this study was to define the textbook outcome for lung transplantation and evaluate its association with post-transplant outcomes and costs. The study found that achieving a textbook outcome was associated with better post-transplant outcomes and lower costs. This suggests that a textbook outcome can help providers and patients assess the quality of transplant centers and identify areas for improvement.

Summary: Intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) is a common primary liver tumor, and the choice of treatment depends on the patient's condition. Doublet chemotherapy with gemcitabine and cisplatin has been the most effective first-line regimen, but triplet regimens and immunotherapy may also be effective. Combining systemic therapy with locoregional therapies and molecular targeted therapy have been developed to improve the treatment outcomes. Recent data showed that combining durvalumab with standard cytotoxic therapy improved survival in ICC patients.

Summary: This study aimed to explore whether assessment of cell phenotypes using flow cytometry (FCM) could be used to identify pulmonary infection after thoracic trauma. The results showed that Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation score, highest pulse rate in first 24 hours, and frequency of CD4(+) central memory cells were the three key variables for identifying pulmonary infection after thoracic trauma. The study suggests that clinical and FCM data have diagnostic utility in the early identification of patients at risk of nosocomial pneumonia (PNA) following thoracic injury.

Summary: The individual prediction of post-liver transplantation hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) recurrence risk is important. By analyzing the data of 4981 HCC patients undergoing transplantation, a prediction score was developed to accurately discriminate the risk of HCC recurrence. The score was externally validated in another 1160 patients, showing consistent results in risk discrimination.

Summary: The value of minimally invasive approaches for living donor hepatectomy remains unclear. This study compared donor outcomes after different surgical approaches and found that pure laparoscopic and robotic living donor hepatectomy were associated with decreased blood loss and length of stay compared to open hepatectomy, but had longer operative time. Robotic living donor hepatectomy was also associated with decreased length of stay compared to laparoscopy-assisted hepatectomy.
