Summary: The study found that preoperative weight loss is not predictive of postoperative weight loss success after bariatric surgery, although greater preoperative weight loss may be associated with a slight decrease in length of hospital stay. However, preoperative weight loss does not affect operative time, complication rates, ICU admissions, or intraoperative complications.

Summary: This study evaluates the safety and perioperative complications of bariatric surgery in patients with comorbid chronic kidney disease (CKD). The results show that vertical sleeve gastrectomy (VSG) is a safer option compared to Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) in CKD patients. Although there is an increased risk of complications in the perioperative period, dialysis does not affect the outcomes.

Summary: This systematic review examined the impact of preoperative dietary interventions on non-bariatric surgery outcomes for patients with excess weight/obesity. Findings suggested that preoperative low calorie diets could improve outcomes for certain surgeries, but further research is needed to establish the impact on other surgeries.

Summary: This study suggests that excess weight loss of 50% or more is associated with a more optimal body composition outcome, and the reduction in lean body mass predominantly occurs in the early post-operative period.

Summary: This study compared the outcomes of lengthening the biliopancreatic limb in RYGB and OAGB, finding that they were similarly effective in weight loss and remission of comorbidities, with OAGB being faster and LPRYGB resulting in better quality of life post-surgery.

Summary: This study found that performing single-port sleeve gastrectomy in specific patients is feasible and non-inferior when compared to multiple-port sleeve gastrectomy. Further studies are needed to clarify the efficacy and safety of single-port sleeve gastrectomy.

Summary: This study evaluated the short-term outcomes of various revisional bariatric surgeries after failed primary sleeve gastrectomy. Results showed that biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch (BPD/DS) resulted in the largest weight loss, while Roux en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) and BPD/DS had similar rates of major complications. Overall, revisional procedures offer further weight loss for patients with failed primary SG.

Summary: This meta-analysis found that intravenous ketamine can reduce pain scores and morphine consumption immediately after bariatric surgery in patients. However, there were no significant differences in pain scores, morphine consumption, and risk of postoperative nausea/vomiting within 24 hours post-surgery between patients with intravenous ketamine and those without.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the impact of family functioning on postoperative outcomes of adult bariatric surgery patients, revealing a significant correlation between family functioning and patients' weight loss rates, with black patients showing lower weight loss rates. Future research should explore additional family factors as correlates of patient outcomes following bariatric surgery.

Summary: Revisional bariatric surgery is an option for patients with weight regain or inadequate weight loss after primary elective procedures. However, the safety outcomes of revisional procedures are conflicting. This study aims to characterize the patient demographics, procedure types, and safety outcomes for those undergoing revisional compared to initial bariatric interventions.

Summary: Diabetes mellitus is a major epidemic in the US, associated with obesity and metabolic derangements. Many patients struggle to achieve glycemic control and weight loss with medical therapy alone. Bariatric surgery not only provides durable weight loss, but also improves glucose homeostasis through changes in gut hormones, insulin regulation, and gut microbial composition. By improving diabetes management, comorbidities such as cardiovascular disease also improve.

Summary: This study evaluated the relationship between hyperchloremia caused by hypertonic saline and acute kidney injury (AKI) in patients with traumatic brain injury. The results showed that prolonged hyperchloremia and admission glomerular filtration rate (GFR) were independently associated with the development of AKI. However, the number of days of hypertonic saline infusion and the highest serum chloride levels were not predictive of AKI development.

Summary: Surgical residency program websites play a crucial role in providing information to prospective applicants. However, many websites lack important content, such as fellowship match results and resident wellness, which are crucial for applicant decision-making. University-based programs tend to include more of this information on their websites.
